When I was only seven years old, I didn't realize the whole arrangements of our journey as a family to Manchester in 1978. My mother was in great pain and wished to visit specialists in Manchester. My father unwillingly had to sell our property in Australia. The day before we boarded the ship, Father reluctantly said goodbye to his six-year-old cattle dog, Pluto, who was loved by us all. Father's friend Julia was to be his guardian while we were overseas, as he had been getting to know Pluto for many weeks. 

Seven weeks later, an air letter arrived from Julia, giving my father the news that Pluto had run away just two weeks after we had sailed. Julia had advertised constantly on ABC and other regional newspapers. Despite many "sightings", the dog was never found. It seems Pluto just kept running and searching for us. As he was cattle dog, my father thought he would shoe or dingo-trapped, because of his appearance. But our family thought that Father held a secret hope that Pluto was still alive. 

We sailed back to Australia two years later and re-established our home. My father immediately began his own search for Pluto. One cold winter's Saturday morning eight months after our return, my father had a call from an elderly lady living on her own on the outskirts of the town. As she told my father on the telephone, it was "just glimpses of a dingo-type dog in the shadows" of her disused tennis court. That was enough for my father to interrupt my homework. 

We set off in his blue and black Jensen car which he had brought back from England. It was hardly the right vehicle for the rough roads we travelled that day. Five and a half hours later, we found the run-down old property. Sadly, she told my father that the "dingo dog" hadn't been around for a few days. My father had a strange look in his eye. He put two fingers to his lips and did his special whistle for Pluto.

No one is born a winner. People make themselves into winners by their own efforts. I learned this lesson from an experience many years ago. I took the head coaching job at a school in Baxley, Georgia. It was a small school with a weak football program. The school took part in the league matches every year. However, it never ended well. We were more of the audience, watching and cheering instead of sweating out in the fields.

Fortunately, the school held the tradition that the school's old team was to play against the new team at the end of spring practice. For lack of resources, the old team had no coach, and they didn't even practice to prepare for the game.

I was assigned (指派) as the coach of the new team, which was why I was excited. I believed that we were going to win, but to my disappointment, we were defeated. I couldn't believe I had got into such a situation. Thinking hard about it, I tried to figure out the reason and what I should do next. 

It didn't take long before I came to realize that my team was depending on me. Without proper guidance or previous experience, my team was at a loss what to do. I had to change my attitude so that I could bring out the best in them about their ability and potential.

I would let my action do the talking. First, I started doing anything I could to help them build a little pride. I could see their spirits lifted, with their head held high in great confidence. Most importantly, I began to treat them like winners. Only when they regarded themselves as winners could they willingly invest time and energy.

This summer, the other teams enjoyed their vacations.

Six months later, football season started.

Nowadays, family life has become even more challenging than before. Then, how can we create a happier family life? Let's see some advice. 

Enjoy togetherness. When children are babies, parents are advised to spend one-on-one time with their babies.  This can be a big mistake since enjoying each other's company (陪伴) is one of the easiest ways for families to create lasting happiness. Parents should regularly spend quality time with their children doing activities together like playing games, sports. 

 Although the Internet has certainly made communication easier, it is still important to have face-to-face time with your family members. Try to avoid using your cell phone so much.  Many families have regular meetings where they discuss issues affecting (影响) the family. This can be a great way to start talking face to face. You can talk about your family's values, or how you can work together as a group to solve problems that affect the family. 

Plan fun activities as a family. This can be something that you do once or twice a month, or even once a week. This can be something as easy as going to the beach, a park, or going on a trip to visit relatives.  Doing the activities regularly can help you build stronger relationships with your family members, and relieve (释放) stress that many families feel.

Ecofriendly replacement products for single-use plastics are appearing everywhere. But have you heard of edible (可食性的) straws? Now EQUO, a new eco-friendly company in Vietnam has come up with a natural edible solution to plastic or paper straws.

The edible straws are completely plastic free, nontoxic, chemical free, and 100 percent biodegradable according to a company press release.

"It's well known that plastic straws are harmful to the environment. Most of the 500 million used every day in America end up in oceans where they pollute water and harm marine life. Currently over eight billion straws pollute the world's beaches," said Marina Tran-Vu in the press release. "Although there are some plastic and paper straw alternatives on the market, most are environmentally harmful, and we were also unsatisfied with the quality and lasting of paper straws."

All of the materials are locally from regions that support sustainable farming according to the company's website and they struggle to have zero-net influence by" using the power of mother nature". The name of the company was created by combining "ECO" — meaning environmentally friendly — with "STATUS QUO" — meaning the existent state. EQU stands for creating products that have minimal influence on the environment. The company was first shown on Kickstarter on May 18 and hit their funding goal in only 30 days.

Many countries are banning single-use plastics. The EU banned 10 single-use plastic products including straws that will take effect in 2021. Other items that will no longer be made of plastic include cutlery (餐具), and balloon sticks. These 10 items make up a large percentage of ocean waste that harms marine life.

So do your part, use biodegradable cutlery — you can carry your own , edible straws, and reusable water or coffee cups. These small items can contribute to reducing plastic waste.

Heatwaves in the U. S. and floods in western Europe have dominated the news cycle recently, forcing us to re-examine the relationship between climate change and extreme weather. Other catastrophes are going unnoticed. 

In the past week, 380,000 people have been evacuated due to floods in China's Henan province,30 villages in Uganda were affected as rivers overflowed and 25 people died in landslides after Mumbai was hit by big storms. Temperatures in Turkey and North Africa approached 50 ℃, while South Africa and Brazil froze. Siberia is battling wildfires again. Finland experienced 31 continued days with maximum temperatures above 25 ℃, the longest heatwave ever recorded in the country. In Iran, the hottest summer in decades has led to water shortages that in turn caused protests in the country's southwest. 

All these disasters are part of a series of extreme weather events that paint a picture of a world that's already warmed 1.2 C from pre-industrial times. There's no doubt that it will get warmer. 

The global climate is out of balance, German meteorologist Johannes Quaas said in an interview last week. Our climate's reaction to greenhouse gas emissions isn't immediate. The warming and resulting weather events that we see today are a reaction to emissions that entered the atmosphere decades ago. 

Scientists estimate that, even if we meet global emissions reduction goals, the planet will continue to warm after that. That will take the planet to somewhere between 1. 5 ℃ to 2 C above pre-industrial times by the end of the century. While their warming predictions have been correct in the past, there's no way to be absolutely sure when temperatures will stop rising, because the experiment we're running on the planet has never been attempted before.
