    C
“How are you?” is a nice question. It's a friendly way that people in the USA greet each other. But “How are you” is also a very unusual question. It's a question that often doesn't need an answer. The person who asks “How are you?” hopes to hear the answer “ Fine”, even if the person's friend isn't fine. The reason is that “How are you?” isn't really a question and “Fine” isn't really an answer. They are simply other ways of saying “Hello” or “Hi”.
Sometimes, people also don't say exactly what they mean. For example, when someone asks “Do you agree?” the other person might think, “No, I disagree. I think you're wrong…” But it isn't very polite to disagree so strongly, so the other person might say “I'm not sure.” It's a nicer way to say that you don't agree with someone.
People also don't say exactly what they are thinking when they finish talking with other people. For example, may talks over the phone finish when one person says “I've to go now.” Often, the person who wants to hang up gives an excuse “Someone's at the door.” “Something is burning on the stove.” The excuses might be real, or not. Perhaps the person who wants to hang up simple doesn't want to talk any more, but it isn't polite to say that. The excuse is more polite, and it doesn't hurt the other person.
Whether they are greeting each other, talking about an idea, or finishing a talk, people don't say exactly that they are thinking. It's an important way that people try to be nice to each other, and it's part of the rule of the game of language.
    1. (1) When a person in America asks “How are you?” he or she wants to hear “________”.

      A . How are you? B . Hello C . I don't know D . Fine
    2. (2) When a person disagree with someone, it is polite to say “________”.

      A . You are wrong. I disagree B . I'm not sure C . I'm sure I disagree D . No, I disagree
    3. (3) When a person says “I've to go now./ Someone's at the door.” the person may be ________.

      A . Giving an excuse B . Hurting someone's feelings C . ill D . asking you a question
    4. (4) The rule of the game of language is probably “________”.

A . Always say what you mean B . Don't disagree with people C . Never say exactly what you're thinking D . Be polite

Today, we'll visit a place of strange and silent beauty. As beautiful as this place is, its name provides evidence of very real danger. We are exploring Death Valley National Park (死亡谷国家公园).
Death Valley is a huge place. It extends more than 225 kilometers across the southern part of California into the neighboring state (州) of Nevada. Death Valley is a land of beautiful yet dangerous desert and mountains. There are mountains that reach more than 3,000 meters into the sky.
Much of Death Valley is flat and dry. In some areas the ground is nothing but salt. Nothing is able to grow in this salty ground. However, it would be wrong to think that nothing lives in Death Valley. The valley is full of life. Wildflowers grow very quickly after even a small amount of rain. Several kinds of birds live in Death Valley, as do mammals and reptiles. Many different snakes live there too.
The area got its name in 1849. That was the year after gold was discovered (发现) in California. Thousands of people from around the country traveled to the gold mining areas of the state. They were in a hurry to get there before other people did. One group trying to reach California decided to take a path called the Old Spanish Trail. By December they had reached Death Valley. But there was a lack (短缺) of water and there were too few plants for their work animals to eat. The people could not find a pass through the tall mountains to the west of the valley. Slowly, they began to suffer from a lack of food. To survive, they killed their work animals for food and began to walk out of the valley. As they left, a woman in the group looked back and said, "Goodbye, death valley." The name has never been changed.
Death Valley became a national park in 1994. More than one million people visit the park each year.
    1. (1) The text is most probably from ________.

      A . a story book B . a radio program C . a science magazine D . a news report

A . Death Valley is full of life B . much of Death Valley is flat and dry C . nothing can grow in this salty ground D . different animals live in Death Valley
    3. (3) Why did the woman call the area death valley?

A . Because the group of people didn't know how to walk out of the valley. B . Because lots of people died here. C . Because the woman was left behind and would die here. D . Because the group of people lived a hard life here and their work animals were killed.
    4. (4) Which of the following statements is NOT right?

A . Death Valley extends from California to Nev ada. B . Wildlife can live in Death Valley. C . Gold was discovered in California after Death Valley got its name. D . Death Valley didn't become a national park until 1994.
