Recently, a cleaner of the Summer Palace has become popular on the Internet because of his knowledge about the history of ancient(古代的) buildings.
Zhang Xu was born in Beijing in 1984. He became a member of the cleaning Team at the Summer Palace last year. For him, the Summer Palace is a special childhood Memory(童年记忆).
As a child, he came here to play, and as he grew up, he became a part of it. "One day during my work, I saw a few tourists, who came over and took a book to study the buildings. I heard that there seemed to be some discrepancies(出入) between what they said, so I talked about some of my own opinions, " Zhang Xu said. "Besides cleaning, we also provide(提供) services like giving directions, answering questions and offering explanations(提供讲解). "
Zhang Xu became interested in ancient buildings because of his father. In his free time, he would read books to explore(探索) history and culture. He has become a bit of an expert at the Summer Palace.
"I never expected this to get so much attention. I just did what I should do as a cleaner. I hope that people from all over the country will come to the Summer Palace to understand this garden and its history, " Zhang said.
Do you like chocolate? Maybe most people do. A box of it can be a great gift. Buy one for a friend and give it as a surprise. See how happy that person gets.
Say you just got a box of chocolate. Which piece do you pick first? A man studied people's choices. He says they tell something about the person. Do you choose a round piece? You are a person who likes to party. Do you choose an oval(椭圆形的) one? You are a person who likes to make things. Picking a square chocolate shows something else. The person is honest and true. You can believe in him or her.
What kind of chocolate do you pick? Maybe you like milk chocolate. This shows you have warm feelings about the past. Dark chocolate means something else. A person who chooses it looks toward the future. What about white chocolate? Would you choose it? If so, you may find it hard to decide things. Some people like chocolate with nuts(果仁). These are people who like to help others.
Do you believe these ideas? Can candy tell all these things? It doesn't really matter. There is one sure thing about eaters of chocolate. They eat it just because they like it.
Velma, a US high school student, is busy with her studies every day. . She takes care of cats, helps teachers at school and cleans up the beach. Why does Velma do these things? Because students in US schools are required(要求) to do at least 20 hours of community service before they graduate(毕业).
". It's great!" said Bob Parks, a teacher at school.
Although volunteering takes time, Velma enjoys it. "I learn so much from it, " she said. She plans to keep on volunteering even after she finishes the required hours of work.
. Phil, a parent of four, has to drive his children from one activity to another every weekend. "I have no time to work and rest, " he said. "And I know some kids finish their 20-hour volunteering by just sleeping in their fathers' offices!"
Mike Roland, a volunteering manager, heard about those worries. He said, "We keep telling people that students do volunteer work not for graduation. They can learn a lot from work. "
Different from Phil, some parents agree with the project and want their children to spend more time volunteering. ". Children should have more time to contact(联系) with the world, " a father said.
A. They should learn from the work B. But after school, she puts down her books and goes out to volunteer C. This project makes it possible for students to know about the real world D. Twenty hours isn't enough E. But some people have worries about the project |
At the age of six, our kids began to help us with the housework. They helped 1 their pets and clean the house. Now my daughter Cindy can do many 2 of housework. Last week, she even helped me 3 . We were happy because it was delicious. I think doing housework is a good way for them to learn a lot of life skills.
I like getting kids to start doing housework early for a few 4 . First, it is fun for kids to help. Kids like to 5 together with their parents. They don't want their parents to get everything ready for them. Sometimes they like to do things by themselves. It's a good idea to 6 them help you when you are busy. Second, it's never too 7 for them to learn some things. However, having kids do chores doesn't 8 taking away their playtime. It's to let them feel the 9 of working together with family. 10 , it works well. Now our children always help me with the housework and they feel happy about it.
Susan started working in a zoo three years ago. There are about 150 (danger) animals in the zoo.
Susan got special training before working with these animals. Early every morning she looks after them and during the day she shows visitors around the zoo. After that, she cleans the cages(笼子).
Farig, eight-year-old tiger, lives in a cage. One day Susan went into his cage to clean it as usual. She was about to leave when Fariq walked to her. Suddenly, Farig ran to bite(咬) one of her (knee)! Susan knew her life was in danger, she didn't feel scared. She knew she had to do something to save (she). She shouted and tried her best (open) the tiger's mouth. After a few minutes the tiger opened his mouth and Susan was able to get out the cage.
Outside the cage, other workers helped Susan. She lost a lot of blood. She was taken to the hospital right away and had to stay there for several weeks.
Now Susan can walk again and she makes a(n) (decide) to get back to work. "That might seem crazy, but I feel much (happy) when I'm with animals, " she says. She has never thought about (leave) the zoo. For Susan, she has the best job in the world.
Helen has always been interested in helping her community(社区). Her first volunteer experience was for the American Red Cross(红十字) when she was in high school. When she was a school teacher, she also found time to volunteer.
After she retired(退休), she started volunteering to help the old. When her father was older, he
was not able to see as well as he used to, which made her sad because he had always enjoyed reading. She decided it would be fun to read to elderly people in her community.
She also helped one woman write her stories. Ann was almost 100 years old, and Helen wrote down information about her life when she visited her. She put the information in a book and got it published(出版). Ann was very excited to share her life story with her children and grandchildren.
After a strong storm hit some southern cities, Helen volunteered again for the American Red Cross. She prepared food and answered phones in a care centre.
One day Helen read an article in the newspaper about refugees(难民) who needed to learn English. She met once a week with Sahra, a 38-year-old woman from Somalia. Helen gave Sahra a camera and asked her to take pictures of her daily life. In the end, they wrote a book together and used the photos in the book. This helped Sahra learn many new words about her everyday life.
Helen says, "The real value of my volunteer work is becoming friends with the people I help.
They enrich my life as well as I enrich theirs. "
