Last summer, my parents and I took a drive to another city. A few hours into the trip, we took a wrong turn. 1 our trusty GPS pulled up a map of the area (地区) and got us back. It made me wonder: Who 2 maps in the first place? After some searching online, I learned that people who map out roads, mountains, oceans, and other 3 are called cartographers.
Cartographers, also called mapmakers, study geographic information. They use this information to make maps of places around the world. To do their work, cartographers 4 information from many different places.
Cartographers' work is very 5 to a lot of people. Next time a map keeps me from getting lost, I'll be sure to thank a cartographer!
It was a rainy, windy October afternoon. Garth stood outside his house with a wide smile. This was 1 weather for testing his new invention-Umbrella Hat. He could hardly wait to whether it could keep the rain of. He carefully 2 the hat on his head and started walking 3 along the street. It worked!
Suddenly, three boys in his neighborhood appeared and 4 him. Todd, the biggest one, pulled his Umbrella Hat off his head.
"What's THIS?" he asked.
"It's an Umbrella Hat. You can wear it on rainy days and…" Garth said.
The boys 5 , "Will anyone wear that stupid thing?" Todd threw the hat onto the ground and they ran off.
Garth picked up his Umbrella Hat from the ground in tears. "Maybe Todd was 6 …in reality, who would ever need his invention?" He lowered his head and thought to himself.
Suddenly he 7 and saw a lady looking at him. "I was just leaving my house 8 I saw you and those boys. Are you okay?"
Then she saw the 9 Umbrella Hat and asked, "Er… what's that?"
"It's my Umbrella Hat. I thought of it and made it myself…" answered Garth.
"What a creative 10 you have! Don't ever let stupid boys put you down! Keep inventing and one day you will 11 something really great!" said the lady.
"And you have given me a wonderful 12 ," she continued, "I have a gadget (小器具) shop—Gadgets4U—and I'd like to hold a 13 to find the best young gadget inventor in our town. I will display (展示) three best inventions in my shop. I'm sure you will have a(n) 14 of winning a prize."
Garth was very 15 . Gadgets4U was one of his favorite places and the thought of having his invention displayed in that wonderful place was too exciting for words. He suddenly felt much better and could already feel lots of new ideas coming out, waiting to spring into life!
One of the things to be learnt in a foreign language is guessing all the time what kind of thing to come when listening to someone talking. People do this all the time in their own language, so it is necessary (必要的) to do this in a foreign language, too. Here are some examples. 1 . "What's the matter?" "I went to a party last night, so I…" 2 . "I feel so tired these days."" I think you'd better…" 3 ."Of course, she never stops talking. She is one of the most…"
You can see from the above three examples that the context (上下文) helps a lot in understanding what is being talked about. So "guessing "is very important in understanding English, especially (尤其)spoken English.
Festival for Ancestors
In April, there is a special day when people remember their ancestors(祖先). It is Tomb Sweeping Day, also known as Qingming Festival. This year, the day is on April 4.
Tomb Sweeping Day is a traditional Chinese festival. On this day, families bring flowers, food and wine to the tombs of their ancestors. They put cakes and fruits in front of the tombs. After that, they sweep dirt off the tombs and remember their dead family members.
Why do Chinese people do this? That's because people think that visiting tombs during Qingming Festival is to show respect to their dead family members.
Tomb Sweeping Day is also a good time to start gardening and doing outdoor activities in China. Families often get together for outings or to fly kites at this time.
Graduates all face a reality of hunting for a job, the performance of employees(员工) influence their life directly. However, some critics(挑剔的人) argue that creating a close relationship with coworkers and superior(上级) plays the most important part. But the defenders(保守的人) assume(认定) that the knowledge they learned at universities decide most. In my opinion, studying hard in school is the major factor(因素) for a satisfying career.
To tell the truth, a good relationship with leaders is good for a promotion (提升). When they are close to the leader, they could get an information directly and quickly, and get better chances to be promoted. For instance, a roommate of mine, working in the student's union, developed a close friendship with the chief. So when he left the union, he promoted her as the chief directly. The ability of her and her fellow workmates is almost of the same standard. With the advantage of successful relationship, she wins at last.
The importance of studying hard at school is better than that of good relationship. Real skills make sure of a steady(稳定的) performance in a company. That is, only skillful employees can survive in a company. An uncle of mine, for example, fight for his future in a company. He is really a cold man, and always serious but hard-working at school. It is the knowledge which promise him a bright future. Bosses only desire for talented workers who will create profits(利益) for them. When it comes to cutting members, the smart people with relationship will surely be cut firstly, however men with real skills would be the last to be cut.
More significantly(意味深长的), hard-working is a special feature even in a company. Hard-working is the deposit(积蓄、积累) of years, it's a special attitude throughout one's life. People who study hard at school are more likely to study hard in their career. When we were in a university, hard-working promised a great academic performance(学业成绩). When we are in a company, hard-working made us adapt(适应) better and faster to a new condition. In our life, hard-working get us to continue learning all the time. There is no wonder that graduates working hard at school have better performance in their career.
From what have been discussed above, we may safely draw a conclusion (得出结论) that working hard in school is more important. Workers studying hard at school have better ability to solve problems. On the contrary(相反), for people depend on getting along well with others, their career seems to be unsteady.
It was 7:25 a.m. on 15th April, 2021. Mr. Brown was waiting for the train to the park. His sons, one aged five and the other aged eight, were with him at that time.
Suddenly, Mr. Wilson who was very weak fell down on the ground. He got up, but then fell again. This time, onto the track (轨道) between the two rails. A train was coming into the station. It was a scary moment.
But Mr. Brown wasn't scared. He looked at the man and the space that the man was in. It was about half a meter deep. Mr. Brown thought to himself, "The train is going to move over the man. If he tries to get up, the train will kill him. However, the young man will be OK, if he lies on the ground and doesn't move." Mr. Brown jumped onto the track. He lay on top of Mr. Wilson, and kept him down on the ground. The train driver saw both of them. He was afraid, but there was no way for him to stop in time.
The people on the platform (站台) were astonished to see what had happened. When Mr. Brown heard them shouting, he shouted, "We're fine, but tell my sons I'm OK." People were amazed at Mr. Brown's courage and bravery. An ambulance (救护车) arrived and took Mr. Wilson to the nearest hospital. Luckily, there was nothing serious with him.
In a radio interview, Mr. Brown said, "The only thing that happened to me was my coat got dirty." He added, "I just saw someone who needed help at that time. I did what I thought was right."
While most people over 80 are willing to enjoy life after retirement (退休), Zhao Yafu, an agricultural (农业的) researcher in Zhenjiang, Jiangsu Province, likes to spend most of the year working in the fields better.
Born in 1941, Zhao's childhood dream was to become a reporter. When he was in college, Zhao saw how hard lives were in the countryside, so he decided to do something to help.
But when Zhao began his plan with classes on agricultural science in a primary school, only two farmers appeared and looked at him suspiciously (怀疑地). "That only showed what I was doing was necessary," Zhao said. "The villagers needed someone to help them change their minds and embrace (欣然接受) new techniques (技术)."
Zhao kept on asking the farmer to use the new techniques he taught and to plant a new kind of rice. He also asked them to turn to other crops such as strawberries and grapes to help them make more money. As time went by, more new houses and roads were built in the village, and the villagers began to understand that all Zhao really wanted was to help them.
In his 60 years in Zhenjiang, Zhao has helped over 160, 000 farmers shake off poverty (贫穷). He and his team are also active in Western China. Since 2013, they have helped farmers in Western China earn (赚得) nearly 30 billion yuan.
"I saw how poor the villagers used to be, and I also see how they have been changed over the years. I will continue with my work if my health permits (允许)," said Zhao.
