When I was a child in Minnesota, watermelon was expensive. One of my father's friends, Bernie was a rich businessman who had 1 own large store in St. Paul.
Every summer, when the first watermelons 2 , Bernie would call. Dad and I would go to Bernie's place. We'd sit on the dock (码头) and 3 a big meal.
Bernie would take his 4 , cut our first watermelon, hand us both a big piece and sit down next to us. Then we'd bury (埋入) our 5 in watermelon, eating the only part—the reddest, juiciest and 6 part—and throw away the rest (其余的).
Bernie was my father's idea of a rich man. I always 7 it was because he was such a successful businessman. Years later, I began to understand that it was not Bernie's wealth (财富)8 but his living way that my father liked. Bernie knew how to stop 9 , get together with friends and eat only the best of the watermelon.
What I learned from Bernie is that being 10 is a kind of mind. Maybe some of us have much money, but they will 11 be free enough to eat only the nicest part of the watermelon. If you don't take the time to enjoy life's small 12 , your work is probably hurting your life. For many 13 , I forgot that lesson I learned as a child on the dock. I was too busy 14 all the money I could.
Well, I've relearned it. I hope I have more 15 to enjoy the success of others and to take pleasure in the day. That's the best of the watermelon. I have learned again to throw the rest away.
One day it was raining heavily. I was late for a meeting in a nearby city that I knew only by GPS, and my phone died. I couldn't find out how to get there or how to reach my friends.
I stopped at a McDonald's in a poor part of a town and walked up to a mother and her daughter. "I'm sorry," I said. "Do you mind if I make a call with your phone? I need to let my friends know I'm lost." She handed me her phone and then told me I was lucky to make the last call-she was about to turn it off because she didn't have enough money to pay her phone bill.
The young girl and the mother were holding each other and talking together as I made the call. I got in touch with my friends. They, thankfully, knew where I was and told me how to get to them.
As I was leaving, I reached into my wallet. Luckily, there was a $20 bill. I put it into the mother's hand and then turned to leave quickly. As I walked through the doors, I heard the mother crying. Her daughter called after me and said, "You have no idea how you just helped us."
I still think back to that day even now. They had no idea how much they helped me, yet I was the one being thanked. It's funny how that works.
①When you go to the park, you might see many older people listening to audio (有声的) books instead of reading paper books. Audio books have become quite popular these days. Why are more and more people choosing audio books over traditional books? Is listening to an audio book just as good as reading a book?
②Reading needs us to focus (集中) all our attention on the words in a book, and we also need to find time and a place to sit down and read. However, you can listen to audio books anytime and anywhere you like, and it gives your eyes a break, too.
③But the big question is, do we get knowledge from audio books as effectively (有效地) as we do from paper books? Researchers did an experiment (实验) to find the answer. Volunteers (志愿者)in Group One were asked to listen to an audio book while volunteers in Group Two read a book of the same content (内容). It turned out that they recalled the same amount (量) of information, whether they listened to it or read it.
④Another study published in the Journal of Neuroscience further supported (支持) the result above. In the study, researchers scanned (扫描) people's brains when they listened to and read books. The result showed that listening to audio books activates (激活) almost the same parts of the brain as reading does.
⑤However, some people still believe that they learn better from reading paper books. One reason might be that when we listen to audio books, we are often multitasking (处理多个任务). "If you're trying to learn while doing two things, you're not going to learn as well," Daniel Willingham, a professor of psychology at the University of Virginia, told The New York Times.
A man took a pair of shoes to a shoe repair shop and said to the shoemaker. "I'd like you to repair these shoes for me, please."
"Certainly, sir." the shoemaker said.
"When will they be ready?" the man asked.

"That's fine." the man said and left the shop.

The same shop, although he was an old man by now.
"Good morning." he said to the shoemaker. "Twenty years ago. I brought in a pair of shoes. Do you still have them?"
"Name?" the old shoemaker asked.
"Smith." the man said.
"I'll go and see. They may be in the back."
The shoemaker went out to the back of his shop and a few minutes later, he returned, carrying a pair of shoes.
"Here they are," he said. "One pair of brown shoes, I'm a bit busy now, they'll be ready on Thursday."
With every new school year comes a fresh start. What are you going to do differently and better? When you are preparing yourself, keep in mind the following:
When you miss a day, or even a class, it's easy to fall behind. The best way to stay with the development of the class is to be there! If you have to miss a class, make sure you meet with your teacher to find out what you missed. Also, listen carefully and take notes in class. Don't write down everything, just the main points.
Ask questions. Believe it or not, most teachers want you to learn and they are always there to help you. If you aren't comfortable asking questions in front of the class, go to talk to the teacher after class.
Take your homework seriously. Like it or not, homework is a necessary part of school. There's not much you can do to get around it. If possible, you can find a study partner and do homework with him or her.
Try new things and get new friends. Try a new sport, something you think you will be good at. If sports aren't your thing, try joining a club. Keep your old friends, but get some new ones at the same time.
Remember, it's up to you to decide what kind of school year you're going to have. Make full use of it while you can!
A. Go to class every day. B. Don't be afraid to ask questions. C. It's really hard for me to get along well with others. D. Making friends with someone is easier when you join a club. E. Make it a habit to do your homework at the same time every day. |

Some people call Lilium jet "a flying car". Why? Firstly, it's not difficult for people to learn to drive it. People can just drive it like driving a car. But it can go (fast) and farther than a car. (second), Lilium jet is not very big, only a quarter of a plane. So it doesn't need airport (飞机场). Only a small place is OK. It can stop everywhere.
