Chinese painting is my favorite traditional Chinese art. It has a long history in China.
People usually draw Chinese paintings with a brush and colorful paints. Most of the drawings
are mainly about people, mountains and rivers, as well as flowers and birds. They are quite
different from the paintings in western countries. When I was little, I started to learn Chinese
painting. It was not easy for a kid to paint with a brush, so I needed to be patient enough
to finish a picture. Thanks to the experience, I can pay all my attention to studying now.
Besides, I can learn much about Chinese culture through this kind of art. This is another
reason why I love it. I hope Chinese painting can become more and more popular in the future.
Chinese painting is my favorite traditional Chinese art. Do you speak a dialect (方言) in daily life? While many Chinese people speak Mandarin ( 普通话), some local dialects are in danger of disappearing. To save them, the Chinese government started the Chinese Language Resources Protection Project (中国语言资源保护工程) a few years ago.

This project looks at how people talk in 1, 712 places. Their languages include 103 dialects that are almost gone. It has helped China to build the largest language resource library in the world. There's an online library and people can learn dialects from over 5.6 million audio clips (音频) and over 5 million videos there.

Why is it important to protect the dialect culture? According to British linguist Harold Palmer, dialects are a key to storing (留存) local cultures. "Language can tell us a lot about a place's history, what people believe, and the biases of an area, he said.

Scholar Zhang Hongming expressed his worries about the disappearance of dialects. "For over 10 years, in areas such as Shanghai and Suzhou, children aged 6 to 15 can understand but hardly speak the Wu dialect, and young people above 15 years old sometimes speak it, but not very well. If this keeps happening, the dialect might disappear, " he said.

So how did China make this big library? "Many people across the country are working hard on this project to make it come true, " said Cao Zhiyun, chief expert on the project. Over five years, more than 350 universities and research groups joined in, along with over 4, 500 experts and more than 6, 000 dialect speakers.

The project is now moving into its second part. This includes creating digital tools like apps and mobile dictionaries to help people learn dialects.

1. (1) Where can people learn dialects from those audio clips and videos?
A . In the local library. B . In the online library. C . In the school.
2. (2) Why is it important to protect the dialect culture according to Harold Palmer?
A . Because dialects make a big difference to passing down local cultures. B . Because many people speak dialects. C . Because some young people hardly speak dialects.
3. (3) What does the underlined word "digital" probably mean in Chinese in the last Paragraph?

Success is often considered to be the opposite of failure. To teenagers, they really need the achievement of a goal or completion of something, such as good grades and the ability to get along well with their classmates. Most parents measured(判定) the success of their children according to grades. Some schools used to agree with these parents, but now they pay special attention to moral(道德的) education and character-building(品格培养) to make sure teenagers achieve success in building human relationships.

Schools give chances to students to discover their hidden ability so that they can enjoy some form of success. For example, those good at speaking skills are advised to take part in speech competitions. And those interested in arts are expected to perform in front of their classmates. Teenagers also get the pleasure of success when they join their favorite clubs.

Teenagers are often told that success is not easy to achieve and that success lies in hard work. Great efforts have to be put into project work. They should avoid doing things much later than planned. This will lead to a mountain of work which finally makes them nervous. Another good quality(品质)is a sense of responsibility(责任) which makes them remember that a task has to be completed.

Sticking to moral values is the key to success too. Honest teenagers will win the trust of friends leading to good relationships. Self-motivation(自我激励) is another quality to be developed, for self-motivated teenagers will have the strong will and drive to perform a task and finally get to enjoy a sense of achievement.

1. (1) What does the underlined word "they" in Paragraph 1 refer to(指代)?
A . Most parents. B . Some schools. C . Their children.
2. (2) How does the writer develop his/her idea in Paragraph 2?
A . By asking questions. B . By explaining reasons. C . By giving examples.
3. (3) According to Paragraph 3, which sentence may agree with the writer's idea?
A . Project work makes teenagers nervous. B . Good qualities will lead to a happy life. C . Teenagers are advised to complete tasks in time.
4. (4) What can be the best title for the text?
A . The Meaning of Success to Teenagers B . The Way to Communicate with Others C . The Key to Discovering Hidden Ability

How to Ask for Directions

Asking for directions is the first thing we do when we arrive in a new place, or even when we are just trying to find a strange place. Here are some tips for you.

Use greetings and polite expressions. Starting the conversation with a greeting is necessary. If you want to get a nice answer, you'd better begin by saying "Hello" first. And some words like "may" "can" and "could" will help you express yourself better.

Build your vocabulary(词汇). You should know the basic words that can be used when asking for directions. Learn the most commonly used prepositions(介词) like "between" and adverbs(副词) like "near". It's also useful for you to remember places like High Park, and words like "bank", "block". . . Then try to use the right words when asking for a direction. Sometimes, it can happen that you are still far from the place you look for and you have to use the public transport. Which kind of public transportation should you choose? You might ask like this, "Is it far? Do I need to take the bus or the subway there?" You also need to remember different kinds of transportation like the underground or the taxi when explaining your need.

Try to know some important landmarks(地标). Don't be afraid of using symbols. Every city in the world has its own symbols. You can decrease(减少) search time if you know what the most important symbols are in the city. For example, in London, England, you may find that there are many symbols here. Find it and make it!

Don't be too shy to ask. Learn to relax if you get lost somewhere. Every person may do that now and then, especially when visiting a new city.

A. Get to know the transportation system.

B. But always make sure you can ask others for help.

C. They are very useful when you need to find somewhere fast.

D. Knowing how to ask for them can make our life much easier.

E. And it is also important to know where your house or hotel is on a map.
