Chinese people call the Spring Festival "Nian". But do you know that Nian was once the name of a monster(怪物)?
A long time ago, the moister Nian lived in the mountains. It ate animals. But in winter, it could not find food. So it came to villages and ale a lot of people. People were so afraid of Nian that they locked their doors before evening came during the winter. One day, an old man came to a village. He told people there that Nian was afraid of three things 一 the color red, fire and noise. He told people to play drums and gongs ( 锣), make big fires and set off fireworks to make Nian go away.
On a moonless, cold night, Nian went to the village again. As soon as it opened is big mouth, people made loud noises and made fires. Nian was really afraid and ran away. Wherever it went, there was noise and fire. When Nian was tired and could not run anymore, people killed the monster.
After that, on the coldest day of winter, people beat drums and gongs, and set off fireworks to celebrate the death of the monster of Nian. They put up red lanterns and have a big dinner without sleeping during the night.
In the morning people greet each other happily. So now we have the Spring Festival.
Jump rope (跳绳) games have always been popular around the world. Two students from different countries describe how they used lo play jump rope.
Chen Qiurong from China
Rubber band (像皮筋) jumping. which was only for girls. was popular in my primary school. When we got three persons together, we could start our game. There were four jumping levels: ankle (脚踝) high, knee high, waist (腰) high, and under the shoulders. As the game continued, the level of jumping got higher and higher. More and more girls tried to jump and we competed as teams. The game was interesting, and it taught us to pull together and compete.
Jimena Baquero from Colombia
When I was a little girl, I spent hours playing a very fun jump rope game at school or in my neighborhood. It was a girls' game and we never got tired of it.
To play the game, we needed three or more people. A player started by jumping the rubber band at ankle height. Then it was raised to the middle of the legs, then to the knees, the hips (臀部),the waist, the chest, the shoulders, the neck, and the head. In the last level called "heaven", the band was held up with raised arms. We were so creative and we enjoyed ourselves in a simple way.

Have you ever been to Singapore? For many Chinese tourists, this small island in Southeast Asia is a wonderful place to take a holiday. On the one hand, more than three quarters of the population are Chinese, so you can simply speak Putonghua a lot of time. On the other hand. Singapore is an English-speaking country,所以这也是一个练习英语的好地方.
Most large cities have zoos, but have you ever ben to a zoo al nigh? Singapore has a night zoo called the "Night Safari". It might seem strange to go to a zoo when it's dark. But if you've ever been to a zoo during the daytime, you might understand why this zoo Is so special.许名动物只在晚上醒来. so this is the best time to watch them. If you go to see lions, tigers, or foxes during the daytime, they'll probably be asleep! At the Night Safari. you can watch these animals in a more natural environment than a normal zoo.
One great thing about Singapore is hat the temperature is almost the same all year round. This is because the island is so close to the equator. So you can choose to go wheneveryou like — spring, summer, autumn, or winter! And, of course, it's not too far from China!
