One of the greatest inventions in the history is the invention of the World Wide Web by Tim Berners-Lee.
Berners-Lee was born on June 8th, 1955 in London. Both his parents were good at math and were members of a team. The team invented one of the earliest computers, the Manchester Mark I. With the help of his parents, he did very well in math.
At Oxford University, he invented a computer with an old television. After graduating in physics in 1976, he went to work for a company called Plessey Controls Limited in Poole. This company produced traffic lights. Then, in 1978, he created some software and a computer operating system when he was working for another company in Poole. That company was called D.G. Nash Limited. He came up with the idea of "hypertext (超文本)" in order to help scientists share research information. In 1989, Berners-Lee learned how to join hypertext with the Internet.
And one year later he built the first web browser and editor (浏览编辑器) called the World Wide Web. From then on, Berners-Lee allowed others to use his idea freely.
In 1999, he was called one of the 100 most influential (有影响的) people of the twentieth century by Time Magazine. He received many prizes including $1.2 million on April 15th, 2004.
Today he lives in Lexington Massachusetts with his wife and two children.
Parents often believe that they have good relationship with their teenagers. But last summer Joanna and Henry noticed a change in their older son. Suddenly he seemed to talk far more to his friends than to his parents. "The door to his room is always shut," Joanna noted.
Tina and Mark noticed similar changes in their 14-year-old daughter. "She used to cuddle up against me on the sofa and talk," said Mark. "Now we joke that she does this only when she wants something. Sometimes she wants to be treated like a little girl and sometimes like a young lady. The problem is understanding which time is which."
Before the age of 11, children like to tell their parents what's on their mind. "In fact parents are the first on the list," said Michael Riera, author of Uncommon Sense for Parents with Teenagers. "This completely changes during the teen years," Riera explained. "They talk to their friends first, then maybe their teachers, and their parents last."
Parents who know what's going on in their teenagers' lives are in the best position to help them. To break down the wall of silence, parents should create chances to understand what their children want to say, and try to find ways to talk and write to them. And they must give their children a mental break, for children, they also need freedom, though they are young. Another thing parents should remember is that to be a friend, not a manager, with your children is a better way to know them.
①When it comes to Chinese students considering studying in foreign countries, many of them usually believe that life will be easy and enjoyable. Unfortunately, it's likely that students with those thoughts will be disappointed very soon after landing at the airport.
②So, what are the problems you may have, and how can you deal with them?
③Teaching and learning styles in America are very different from those in China, requiring more critical thinking (批判性思维) and teamwork. In a normal American classroom, one project might be done by a study group in which every person has their own responsibility.
④So don't worry about your language or any grammar mistakes. Just watch what other students do, and don't be afraid of asking any questions. The discussions, or sometimes even arguments, that your group members and you hold are likely to be the beginning of a friendship.
⑤Besides schoolwork, another important thing faced by overseas students is homesickness or loneliness. You may miss your parents' cooking, your pets, or even your old bed. Being away from home can create bitter feelings, especially when faced with the challenges of getting used to a new environment.
⑥What I strongly suggest is to try hard to deal with these feelings. Be open to new friendships. Sign up for school activities, and give yourself permission to enjoy life at school, even if you miss home a lot. Be organized and keep a diary to check your progress. Write down three new things that you're grateful for every evening, as well as three things you're looking forward to every morning.
⑦Studying abroad is never simple. In fact, there will be many difficulties every day. But I'm sure you will overcome your difficulties and make your time overseas a success.
The life has been full of challenges and difficulties. Life is not about the smartest person or the strongest person, or even the richest person. However, life is about having the mind in your heart "Never Give Up", even when you feel that giving up is the only choice. The world is waiting on your gifts.
You are important to this world and believe it or not, someone is waiting for you to enrich their lives. You are too important to the world to just give up.
You may feel that life is challenging you from time to time and you can't take it anymore. You may want to give up right now. But here is a thought, what will happen if you overcome the difficulties?
When an Olympic runner is in a race, he or she is focusing on one thing -- the finishing line. You have to focus on the big picture - not just where you are right now. Focus on where you want to be. Make an agreement with your mind and your mouth.
One of my favorite poems is called "Crystal Stair" written by Langston Hughes. In that poem, a mother tells her son that life is difficult, you will meet rocks and hard places, but the end is victory to choose who stand their ground and ride the course.
Whatever you are facing, you can make it through. There is a rainbow on the other side of your situation. Stay strong, stay focused and never give up.
A.Focus on the future B.To give up is to live a meaningless life C.Life isn't crystal stair D.There is a rainbow after every storm E.What if you win F.Life won't be the same without you |
Ashley was outspoken, fashionable, and the "Queen Bee" in my school. I looked up to her and idolized her. I listened to the music she listened to, wore the clothes she wore. I even took1 classes though I had really wanted to take theatre. I finally fitted in2 group.
One day, I skipped out of my last class a few minutes early to get seats 3 our group at the dining hall. Concentrating on my homework, I didn't notice they had sat down behind me. Before I could say a word, I realized what they were 4 .
I listened silently. "She's such a loser," one girl said.
Another girl added, "Ashley, she5 follows you, trying to copy you."
"I wish she would leave us alone. We were in the same summer school and now she thinks we're best friends." The once familiar voice sounded so 6 and strange.
I was mortified. My hands were shaking. I couldn't help crying 7 . I felt heart-broken for the very first time. How did this happen? I 8 we were friends.
I ran home. My mother just held me while I sobbed for hours. The advice she gave was so 9 , and I had heard it a million times. "Just be yourself and people will like you for10 you are." This time it became so profound. Then and there I 11 to find myself back. That was exactly what I did.
Over the next month, I went through a lot of 12 . I bought new clothes that I wanted to wear. I no longer went to art class with them, and took theatre. I began making new friends. I developed my own 13 and never again followed the crowd.
I had an amazing school year.14 I look back, I think it was the year when I discovered the person I was going to be. Despite the pain I felt that day, it was a15 they had given me.
When I was in primary school, I fell in love with reading. The books brought me intowonderful world. The more I read, the more I wanted to know. However my parents couldn't afford so many books. I had to solve the problem (I). There was a bookshop near my home One day I walked into the shop and picked up a book. I didn't know I could read there without buying any books or not. At first, I just read a few pages and then put it back. (luck), no one noticed me. After that, I went there (read) every day. Several days later, while I was reading, the owner came up and asked. "You like reading?" I looked down and replied nervously, "Yes" "Don' t worry." he said a smile. "You may read books here if you help me clean the shop. might take you about ten minutes every day. "I felt quite(surprise)."Really? It's so kind of you!" I was very happy that I could read there.
Now studying in high school, I can borrow books from the library. The problem (solve) completely and my hobby of reading is kept. It will make a big(different) to my life.
Dear Li Hua,
Long time no see. How is it going?
I am excited to tell you that I am going to study as an exchange student at your school soon. I have changed a lot since I saw you five years ago. What about you? And how has Hangzhou changed? By the way, I'd like to buy something special and local in Hangzhou for my host family as a gift when I first meet them. Do you have any suggestions?
Yours,
Grace
