There was a naughty (淘气的) little boy among the children. One day he caught a very small bird and held it in his cupped hands. Then he had an idea. He said to his friends, "Let's trick (捉弄) the old woman. I'll ask her what I'm holding in my hands. Of course, she'll answer that I have a bird. Then I will ask her if the bird is alive or dead. If she says the bird is dead, I'll open my hands and let the bird fly away. If she says the bird is alive, I'll quickly crush it and show her the dead bird. Either way, she'll be wrong. "
The children agreed that this was a clever plan. Up the hill they went to the old woman's home.
"Granny, we have a question for you," they all shouted.
"What's in my hands?" asked the little boy.
"Well, it must be a bird," answered the old woman.
"But is it alive or dead?" asked the excited boy again.
The old woman thought for a moment and then answered, "It is as you will, my child."
We study at No. 1 Middle School. We have a special activity in May. We usually call it Food Street. We held this activity on the school playground in May this year.
This activity is a part of our school English Art Festival. The teachers divided the students in each class into groups. Each group sold different kinds of foods. The students did the cooking and the shopping by themselves. They cooked delicious food such as fried chicken, potato chips and vegetables. The students all worked hard and sold the food at low prices. The customers were all the students, teachers and parents. They were all pleased with the nice food.
"It was really hard work," said one of the students. "We must make a plan before the cooking. We must know how much we should spend on the things. Sometimes we needed to learn how to cook some food. Also, we must learn how to serve customers well. "
"This activity was a good chance for students to improve their skills," said one teacher. "What was more, the students did not only learn how to make money by their own hands, but also knew the meaning of life. " Parents also welcomed this kind of activity. They thought their children became more hard-working and understanding.
Anger is a kind of feeling. Many things can make you angry. When your teacher gives you too much homework, when your team loses an important game, when a friend borrows your favorite thing and then breaks it, you may get really angry.
Usually, your body will tell you when you are angry. For example, you breathe faster, your face turns red, and you may want to break something or hit (打) someone, but sometimes, you hide your anger. For example, you may hide it in your heart. The problem is that if you do this, you may get a headache or your stomach may hurt.
In fact, it's not good to hide your anger, and it's normal for you to get angry sometimes. But anger must be let out in the right way, without hurting others or yourself.
When you get angry, you can talk about it with other people. It's helpful to talk about your anger with an adult, such as parents, a teacher, etc. When you talk about anger, those bad feelings can start to go away. Here are some other things you can do when you start to feel angry: talk to a good friend; count from 1 to 100; give someone a hug (拥抱); go for a bike ride; think about good things, etc.
Remember that how you act when you are angry can make everything better or worse. Don't let your anger control (控制)you.
At 9:30 p. m. yesterday, I (sit) in my chair, listening to a strange sound. It made me scared.
This was the (three) time I heard the sound. I didn't know who or what made the sound. It sounded someone was knocking at my window but I lived on the ninth floor!
I was too scared open my eyes until the sound stopped. I thought about (ask) for help, but I was sure people would laugh at me.
"There are no such things as ghosts," they'd say. "There it is again!" I shouted. My mom (come) upstairs and asked me what was going on. Then she heard the strange noise too. She went into the bathroom. I wanted (stop) my mom because I was afraid that something bad would happen to her. But she started laughing. "It's OK, dear. It's just a strong wind making your curtain shake and (knock) the window. "
I was very surprised. Since then, I (start) thinking more scientifically. In the world, there are no ghosts. I don't need to be afraid. If such things happen again, I (do) like what my mom did and find out the truth.

It was the summer of my 16th year. I was with a group of boys touring a college. When the trip had first started, I was filled with excitement. It was going to be a week of adventure, a week of , and the possibility of starting on a new path in my life. Five days later, I was filled with sadness. I missed my Mom. I missed my Dad. I the mountains, the green trees, and the smell of the wild flowers in the summertime. I didn't think I could feel any more homesick.
I walked outside and sat down on a bench. I knew that I was at a crossroads and that the decision I was going to would affect (影响) the rest of my life. This college had sounded so good to me a few weeks ago. Now, however, I knew that I could never go to school here. I couldn't be so far away from my family for so long. I sighed (叹气) a long sigh and looked up at the setting sun. The sunset was amazing. It filled the whole sky and I felt its beauty and peace over me. At this moment, I knew that I was making the right choice. It made me think of Robert Frost's poem: I took the one (road) traveled by, and that has made all the difference.
Since that day, I have been at many crossroads in my life. Sometimes I have made the wrong choice and had to go to make things right. More often than not, though, I have felt encouraged and made the choices. They took me where I needed to go and helped me to become who I needed to be.
The next time you are at a crossroads, keep your eyes looking ahead and your heart open. Let courage your steps and you will always take the road meant for you.
Most people want to be happy, but few know how to find happiness. Money and success alone do not bring lasting happiness. Aristotle, a Greek thinker, said, "Happiness depends upon ourselves." In other words, we make our own happiness. Here are a few suggestions to help you be happier.
The first secret of happiness is to enjoy the simple things in life. Too often, we spend so much time thinking about the future—for example, getting into college or getting a good job—that we fail to enjoy the present. You should enjoy life's simple pleasures, such as reading a good book, listening to your favorite music, or spending time with close friends. People who have several close friends often live happier and healthier lives.
The second secret to living a happy life is to be active, and have hobbies where you forget your problems and time. Many people experience this dancing, or playing a sport, such as swimming. You can forget about your problems, and only think about the activity.
Finally, many people find happiness in helping others. Studies show that people feel good when they spend their time helping others. If you want to feel happier, do good things for someone. You can help a friend with his or her studies, go shopping to buy food for an elderly person, or simply help out around the house by washing the dishes.
