A few months ago, I learned that the city food bank needed some volunteers. I used to be the 1 in my group of friends. So, I sent letters to 10 friends. I'd like to set up a group that would volunteer to serve dinner to the disabled people. I wanted to 2 my friends to be part of the group. Almost all of my friends agreed.
One day, several of my friends brought some food and helped prepare the 3 . "I got such a strong feeling of satisfaction when I saw the disabled people get the food!" said one friend. Later, another friend made a list about serving, 4 we could do quickly and easily. Now each month there are new faces that join the group. One woman even invited another group of her friends to serve.
It's hard to imagine that simple letters asking friends to help have made a great difference. At first, I just wanted to be an organizer. Now, I 5 my idea. I also love to work as a volunteer, because I can get more joy from the happy faces of the disabled people.

It was very windy when I woke up last Tuesday morning. As soon as I set off for the airport (机场), it started to rain heavily. What a great way to a holiday!
While I was driving to the airport, the got worse. Suddenly, a flash of lightning struck (一道闪电击中) a tree. It came straight down just meters in front of my car. Thetree completely blocked (挡住) the road, so I couldn't move any further. I tried to call for help on my phone, but I make it.
I was sure that I'd miss my plane, so I turned the radio and tried to get some information. Soon there was a loud knock (敲击声) at the car window. I rolled down (摇下) my window. To my, it was a young man in wet clothes. "Need a ride?" he asked. My plane was in an hour so I didn't think twice. I took my bags, carefully onto the motorcycle and shouted, "To the airport please! "
It was my first time on a motorcycle so I was very. The young man drove so fast that I closed my eyes all the way. Suddenly, the motorcycle came to a stop. "Here we are, sir!" he said. I looked at my watch and there were only ten minutes left. I was just in time for my flight (航班). The young man me a nice trip, and then quickly drove away.
Tina, 14 years old
I hardly ever do housework. Sometimes my mother asks me to clean my room if she's very busy, but she always gives me money or a gift for helping her. After all, housework is the job of parents, isn't it?
David, 14 years old
Housework may be a little fun. My parents are sometimes tired. When I try to help them with some housework, they are very happy. Since we get much from our parents, why not do something for them?
Judy, 14 years old
I often help my mother wash clothes or help my father wash his car. Doing housework can keep me strong and healthy. It is like a kind of exercise, isn't it? The most important is that I can learn to be independent by doing housework.
Henry, 14 years old
I have to do housework for about an hour every day. I wash the dishes and clothes, clean the floor and sometimes cook. My parents never pay me for doing housework. I think it's everyone's duty in the family, isn't it?

Dear Uncle,
I study really hard. I want to get good grades to make my parents happy. However, I often fail (不及格) my exams. I don't know why. Could you help me?
Yours,
Tom
Dear Tom,
Maybe you're under too much pressure. Don't worry. Here are some things you can do to get better grades. Please try them out:
Believe in yourself. Before having an exam, write down the highest grades you think you can get. Then study hard. Believe that you can achieve (实现) it.
Plan your time well. With a good time plan, you have time for the things you have to do now and still have time for things you want to do. This can make you feel relaxed.
Listen carefully in class. Listen to the teacher carefully in class. It can help you to learn better and more quickly. You need to take good notes, too.
Study smartly. Find better ways to study, like doing your own tests at home to find out where your weaknesses (弱点) are, or studying with a good friend.
Yours,
Uncle
New Ways to Raise Money for Charity(慈善事业)
Looking for a new way to raise money for charity? Don't give up. There are several ways to support your favorite charity.
How about organizing a car wash? Everybody who has a car sooner or later washes it or has it washed. The money the car owners pay for having their cars washed will go towards your charity. When we did it, we had an amazing time! At first, some of us were worried about getting wet or dirty and it's true.
On the other hand, if you don't feel like getting wet or messy, but have some musical talent. Street musicians can make a lot of money, and so can you. If you've got the talent and courage it takes to play in front of an audience(观众), you just need to find a suitable place, practice for a few hours with your friends first.
I hope the above ideas have helped you a bit, and if you've got any other great suggestions, we would love to hear and practice them, too. Good luck!
A. But we also had fun, and at the end of the day it was really worth it! B. Has your school run out of clever and fun ideas? C. And then give it a try! D. You can draw pictures by raising more money. E. How about organizing a street concert? F. So why don't you and your classmates do the job? |

A father and his daughter were walking along the country road on a hot summer day. Suddenly, the daughter saw a woman selling apples. The father didn't take much money with him, but it was enough to buy two apples. So he bought two big red apples and gave them to his daughter.
The daughter held one apple in each of her hands. The father smiled and asked her if she could share the two apples with him. On hearing this, the daughter quickly took a bite(咬) of one apple. But before he could speak, the daughter took a bite of the other apple quickly.
The father showed surprise and wondered why she did in such a strange way. He thought that probably his daughter was too young to understand sharing and giving.
At that time, his daughter, with an apple in one hand, said "Dad, eat this one. It is more delicious. " The father couldn't say anything. He felt sorry about making a judgment(判断) so quickly about his daughter's action. "Thank you, my dear," he said happily.
Don't judge anything too quickly. Always spend some time understanding things better. Then you may change your mind.
Recently, I saw a (n) internet video that was shot by a young foreigner. She played two— a Chinese mother and an American mother. She did what the mothers usually did for their children. Chinese mothers took care of their children all the time and they would do all the things . While the American mothers cared about the children's independence very much. They would ask the kids to do housework. When they grew up, they asked the kids to move out and live by. Although parents have different ways to their children, they all love their children. |
