For 16-year-old Ma Yifei, the violin performance of the Beijing 2022 Olympic theme song, Snowflake, was her best present for Paralympians ( 残奥运动员 ) all over the world. Even though snowflakes are related to winter, she let others feel warmth, hope and light through her performance. "I'm also disabled and I want to do something for them with my music," said Ma.
Ma went blind at the age of two because of an illness. She became interested in music when she was young. She started to learn to play the piano at five and the violin at nine, experiencing the "colorful" music through sound and emotion.
Ma's mother Ha Chunyan, a former music teacher in a primary school, helped her memorize the music score (乐谱) before she played the piano. Ma could not see the keys and always played the wrong notes. It took her thousands of tries to play a piece correctly.
Learning the violin was more challenging. Ma needed to feel the teacher's hands, arms and back to learn the movements, and listen to the strings (弦) over and over again to feel the muscles (肌肉) herself.
"After three years of learning, she still could not make any sound except terrible noises," said Ha, who advised her daughter to give up the violin. But Ma said, "As I've been practicing so long, it's hard to give up. I believe I will play better if I persist in practicing."
In 2018, Ma got a chance to follow Sheng Yuan and Cao Yuhan, famous musicians from the Central Conservatory of Music, to study music in Beijing. She left her home in Ningxia to follow her musical dream, though she knew there would be more challenges ahead.
Ma expressed her excitement about performing at the big event. "All my hard work has paid off. I'm proud of standing on the stage today."
Sleep is a physical and mental (精神的) need. We all need to sleep, though the sleep hours are different from person to person. Doctors do not know why we need sleep, but they all agree that sleep is very important to us. Without enough sleep, the body may be weak.
One-third of adults have sleeplessness. There are over 80 kinds of sleep-related disorders (失调). However, other adults are lucky and have no sleeping problems. They sleep as soon as their heads hit the pillows. Do you sleep well? If you have sleeplessness, here are a few suggestions.
l Make a timetable, and stick to it.
We need to sleep at regular times. If your bedtime and wake-up time change from day to day or on weekends, your sleep rhythms (节奏) aren't predicted and the body doesn't know how to act. So, it's important to have a regular wake-up time, even on weekends, vacations or after a night of poor sleep.
l Don't lie in bed awake.
"The best sleep tip you can give somebody is to get up—don't lie in bed awake," sleep expert Grandner said. "Whether it's the beginning of the night or the middle of the night, if you've been awake for 20 or 30 minutes, get up and reset (重新调整). Maybe you just need five minutes to get sleepy, or maybe an hour, but don't spend that time awake in bed." Change your thinking about sleep.
"Many people regard sleeping as the final thing they have to do for daily activities. They would like to work or watch TV very late rather than sleep on time. That thinking needs to be changed." Grandner said.
"Don't see your sleep as the time you have left in your day," he advised. "See your sleep as the time you need in order to prepare yourself for an energetic (精力充沛的) tomorrow."
"It may sound like a small change in thinking, but it's an important one." Grandner added.
Although people are always busy with their work or study, they are still making time to do sports. Have you wondered why? The answer is clear. Doing sports brings many advantages.
Sports have a good influence on health. Studies show morning exercises can make people more awake and ready. Then they can deal with whatever is ahead for the day. By burning fat, people are less likely to get ill. 30 minutes of quick walking over 5 days could help people sleep easily and feel more energetic.
Nowadays more and more people choose to play "green sports". They take a walk in the park, run in the countryside or hike in the mountains. Only a pair of comfortable shoes is enough. Simple and convenient, they can get away from the busy city life and enjoy nature.
Sports develop sportsmanship (运动精神). Good sportsmanship includes small actions as simple as shaking hands with other competitors before a game, or admiring good performances made by others. Accepting bad voices bravely is also part of sportsmanship. That's why more and more parents would like the kids to start doing sports.
A. Here are some of them. B. The spirit is valuable to kids. C. It can also help to keep burning fat. D. People don't need to spend too much money. E. Sports provide chances to get close to nature. |

Rebecca is a wildlife camerawoman from the United Kingdom. She was filming a documentary for the BBC in the Pacific Ocean. When she saw hundreds of birds, she cried. They died after some of the plastic that was into the sea. The beaches on the Pacific islands used to be a beautiful place, but now they are covered with plastic toys, bottles, pens... every plastic thing you can of.
Rebecca decided to do something. She had an idea of "Bag for Life". In her hometown of Modbury in southwest England, she asked local shopkeepers they could do something to help. She asked to stop providing plastic bags in their shops.
To Rebecca's surprise, the shopkeepers agreed and Modbury became the plastic bag-free town in Britain. Instead, shops provide people reusable cotton bags or biodegradable (可生物降解的) bags. Other towns followed Modbury's and more towns around Britain and around the world are becoming plastic bag-free.
Now "Bag for Life" is part of the national culture, and the act of reducing the use of plastic bags has the law! Rebecca said that she would do more things for the environment.
Not getting enough sleep is bad for our health. And for those people don't have enough sleep, their risk of getting sick will increase. To help you get the rest you need, I will tell you some easy ways fall asleep faster.
Firstly, you should do some relaxing activities going to bed such as taking a hot bath or reading a book. Secondly, don't use your phone as an alarm clock. You may not know that even having your phone nearby good for your sleep. Thirdly, practice deep breathing. Once you're in bed, practice deep breathing, then your brain knows that you're trying to relax and sends a message to your body to do so. You can fall asleep as long as you keep doing this. And is exactly the reason why people "count sheep" to fall asleep.
