Carlos wanted a bulldog puppy(小狗)very much.
"That kind of dog is too expensive," said Mama. "Try to make some money. Ask our neighbors if they have 1you can do."
After two weeks, Carlos had saved twenty-six dollars. But it was not enough to 2 a puppy. Then, Papa pointed out a poster at the store: City Animal Shelter(收容所)Needs Your Help!
"The shelter takes care of homeless pets," Papa said. "Carlos, you need to know 3 to care for a puppy before you get one. I'm sure you can 4 a lot by working there."
At the shelter, Miss Jones, the manager said, "We only take volunteers who work for 5 All our money is to help animals."
"You'll know a lot about dogs," Papa 6 Carlos.
Carlos's shoulders dropped. How was he ever going to get enough money for a puppy? 7 he agreed to give it a try.
Carlos started working at the shelter on Saturday. His task was sweeping. One 8 named Pepper jumped and ran around him all the time. She was fully grown, but she was as playful as a puppy.
After several weeks, Carlos began to 9 his time with the dogs, especially Pepper. One day Carlos asked Miss Jones why Pepper was still at the shelter.
Miss Jones sighed, "We've had 10 finding a home for Pepper. Most people don't want such an energetic(精力旺盛的)dog." "I 11 I could buy her," Carlos replied.
Miss Jones smiled, "You can't buy her, 12 you can adopt(领养)her."
With his parents' permission, Carlos made it at last. "I thought I wanted a bulldog puppy, but I got Pepper instead," Carlos said.
Pepper barked with joy.

When people refer to the Chinese tea culture today they won't miss an important person in the Chinese history—Lu Yu, who was respected as a "Sage of Tea(茶圣)" for his contribution to the Chinese tea culture. He is best known for his book The Classic of Tea, the first work on growing, making and drinking tea.
Lu was born in 733 A.D.in Tianmen, Hubei. As a child, he studied under the guidance of Zou Fuzi. Lu Yu often made tea for his teacher. He also took care of fellow students' health using his rich knowledge on tea and herbs(草药)that he learned.
Lu Yu often went to the countryside to gather tea leaves and herbs. On one of those trips, Lu Yu came across a spring, whose water was quite clear and clean. When Lu Yu made tea with this spring water, he found the tea tasted better than usual. From then on, Lu Yu realized the importance of water quality in making tea.
In 752 A.D., Lu Yu finished his studies, said goodbye to his teacher and returned to Jinling, where he met Cui Guofu. Both men shared the same interest in tea, literature, and poetry. They soon became good friends. During this period, Lu Yu stayed with Cui Guofu and helped him in his administrative(行政的)tasks. The two spent much time travelling, drinking tea, and writing poems.
This period was important for Lu Yu as a man of literature and a period for him to practice and sharpen what he learned from his teacher. Cui Guofu, with his rich experience and skills in literary work, became a coach that provided the necessary help with Lu Yu's writing and literary skills.
During this time he wrote The Classic of Tea.
There is an old saying that all of us are born with two bags hung on our necks. A small bag in front of our chest is filled up with other people's faults(缺点),while the big one at the back is full of our own shortcomings(短处).
This makes it easy to find other people's faults, but hard to see our own faults behind us.
There was a boy named Tommy. He had four friends: Simon, Jack, Johnny and Harry. Tommy always opened the front bag to cheek what was in it. He saw other people's faults very quickly. When Simon was impatient with him, he said to Simon. It's so easy for you to get angry. It is hard to be friends with you."
Later that day, Tommy told his mother about Jack's dishonesty(不诚实)."Jack took my things without asking. He also forgot to return them." Tommy himself did not like sharing his things with anyone. When Johnny was too tired to play with him, he said, "You are such a rude(粗鲁的)person." He thought Harry was too proud of his rich parents. But Tommy was just proud of himself because he could not see any of his own shortcomings! He could not understand why he did not get on well with others. If only Tommy would tur the bags around, he would discover his own impatience, dishonesty, bad manners and vanity(虚荣). They were no better than that of Simon, Jack, Johnny or Harry.
Chinese people love to eat because they think having meals together is the best way to communicate. They think lots of dishes on the table can show that they live a comfortable and rich life.
Now the Chinese government is asking people not to waste the food at any time.
Some restaurants are doing what they can to help people to reduce food waste.
Wang Mei, a famous woman, says, "We shouldn't order more food than we need, and sometimes we can order a half so that we won't waste." She always orders just the enough food she needs.
Some people like eating up everything on their plates. We call it cleaning the plates. Wu Li does it for many years. She says, "
However, many people throw away the whole chicken or fish." Cleaning the plates is not only to save food, but also to protect the environment. Most importantly, it is also good for our health. If we can eat properly, we will not have so many health problems.
A. If customers order more than they can eat, the restaurants would remind them kindly. B. There are still a lot of people who don't have enough food to eat. C. Restaurants are also joining in the action. D. She believes that saving food doesn't mean losing face. E. So some people often order so many dishes that they can't eat up. F. We have to do the dishes after the meals. |
In 1883, a creative engineer (name)John Roebling wanted to build a bridge. It would connect New York with the Long Island.
However, bridge building experts thought that it was (possible). They told Roebling (forget)the idea. But Roebling believed deep in his heart that it could (do).He discussed with his son Washington, an engineer, about the bridge. He managed to let Washington believe the bridge could be built.
discussing how the bridge could be accomplished(完成), they began to build their dream bridge with great excitement. The project started well, but
(late)a great accident took the life of John Roebling. Washington
(injure)and he was not able to talk or even move. However, Washington didn't give up. He came up with a good idea to go for his
dream. All he could do was move one finger and he decided to make the
(good) use of it. He tapped it on his wife's arm to tell other engineers what to do. For 13 years Washington tapped out his instructions with his finger on his wife's arm, until the bridge was finally completed.
This is one of the best examples of something that overcome terrible difficulties and achieve an impossible goal.
