    "Dong" isone of China's 55 ethnic minorities(少数民族),with a population of less than three million mainly living in South China. Theethnic group is well-known for its traditional embroider (刺绣), which has long been passed down from generation to generation (世代相传).

    Qin Naishiqing is amaster of Dong embroidery in Sanjiang Dong Autonomous County in the southern partof Guangxi. At the age of91, she is still good at cutting paper patterns, whichshe says is the spirt of the hand made ant." You should be very skillful inembroidery to become god at paper cutting. When you get a piece of paper, youshould form a picture of the patterns in your mind without actually drawingthem," Qin said.

    Teaching embroidery isa family tradition, and Qin's two daughters-in-law usually join her in teachingyoung people. Phoenixes (长生鸟), dragonsand flowers are common patterns featured in folk art, which are reproduced onembroidered products. Spider flowers, seen as a symbol of good wishes, are veryimportant in Dong people's embroidery patterns.

    Every Dong girl isencouraged to learn the skill at an early age, around 9 or 10 years old. When shegets married, she will traditionally receive a whole set of clothes, includinga wedding dress, made by her mother.

    There are nowthousands of women in the county taking up embroidery一an art form that has remainedunchanged over the years. Qin hopes she can help make sure the traditioncontinues for future generations.
