Once upon a time, there was a poor young man.
He was not 1about his life. Every day, he sat there and said, "If I had a lot of money, I would2whatever I want. "
Nice food, beautiful clothes, big houses and … He wanted so many things.
One day, as usual, the young man sat in front of3little house.
"If I had a lot of 4, I would have a better life," he complained(抱怨).
An old man passed by and heard those5. He stopped and6 the young man.
"7do you say that?" said the old man. "You are rich!" "How?" asked the young man.
"Let's make a deal," said the man. "Would you like to exchange(交换) your eyes for a lot of money?"
"No, I wouldn't!" the young man answered.
Then, the old man had another8. "Or, give me your strong legs. I'll give you lots of gold. " "No way!" Again, the young man9at once. The old man smiled. "Now you see, you are very rich!"10saying that, he walked slowly away.
How many watermelons have you eaten this summer? Chinese people eat 16 billion (十亿) watermelons every year! That means 50 kilograms of watermelon for each person!
However, people in other countries are not so interested in this fruit. One reason (理由) is that it's too expensive. In Sweden, you need to spend 35 yuan to buy just 1/8 of the fruit. In Japan, one watermelon costs around 150 yuan and the taste may not be good either.
Chinese people need to thank Wu Mingzhu for their cheap and tasty watermelons. She is a melon expert (专家) at the Chinese Academy of Engineering(中国工程院). This 92-year-old developed (研发) "8424", a high-quality (高质量的) watermelon in the 1980s. It's very sweet and juicy. Today many farmers grow this type and they can make a lot of money!
My name is August. I will not tell you what I look like. I know I am not an ordinary(普通的) 10year- old kid. I mean, sure, I do ordinary things. I eat ice cream. I ride my bike. I play ball. I play computer games. I have a 14-year-old sister. Things like that make me ordinary. I guess. And I feel ordinary. But I know ordinary kids don't make the other ordinary kids run away screaming(尖叫) in the playgrounds. I know people don't look at ordinary kids for a long time whenever they go.
I want to get a magic lamp and have one wish. I want to have a normal face and no one notices me at all. I want to walk down the street without people seeing me and then looking away. Here's what I think: Why am I not ordinary? Because no one else sees me that way.
Zhou Xue is a mother of a 9-year-old boy in Jiangsu province(省). She is worried because seven of the 46 children in her son's class are wearing glasses. "The eye health of students is a very big problem these days," she tells China Daily. More and more students are getting myopia (近视). What can we do to stop the problem?
Wantang Primary School in Yunnan province has good news for us– no one of its 536 students has myopia, says China Daily.
The following are the ways to help keep the eye health in Wantang Primary School. Maybe we can learn something from them.
First of all, every student must go outside during class breaks. They play outdoors for over three hours a day. Yang Qingyi, a teacher at the school says, "Even for quiet kids, we ask them to take a walk outside. "
Other ways also help a lot. For example, students don't take mobile phones or other electronic devices (电子设备) to school. They get at least 10.5 hours of sleep every day. The school tries to give students a balanced diet (均衡饮食). And there are green trees all around the school. Sun Fubiao, the school's principal (校长) tells China Daily.
These days, our country and schools are doing more to stop myopia. The double-reduction policy (双减政策) came out in July 2021. It says that primary schools should not give homework to students in the first and second grades so that they won't use their eyes too much. Schools should also examine (检查) students' eyesight (视力) at least twice every year.

Winning kids' hearts
Have you ever read the fairy-tale(童话故事)book, Dopey and Grumpy (《没头脑和不高兴》)? One often misses this and that, and the other has a bad temper (脾气). They make many silly mistakes (愚蠢的错误) and finally learn a lesson.
Because he wanted to win children's hearts. At first, Ren translated (翻译) foreign children's books. However, he still wanted to write his own stories. "Sometimes, when I translated, I was not very satisfied (满足) with the works. I thought if I write, I would write it in another way to win children's hearts," Ren wrote in an article.
With this idea, he began to write down things that happened in life. 28. "I myself was a classic (典型的) 'Dopey', often feeling muddle-headed (糊里糊涂的), while my kid is 'Grumpy' when I ask him to do something," said Ren. Then he thought, why not let them keep their shortcomings (缺点) and show them as they are? "They might learn a hard lesson in doing so," Ren said.
With his good idea, the writing was quick. Though Ren was, in his words, dopey, he was not grumpy in life. He was happy! Ren said he loved to work on children's literature (文学).
