My team had two new interns (实习生). I was1 supervisor (主管).
After lunch, I saw that one of them 2 on her smartphone. I went to her and said, "There's another job to do. Do you have time to finish it?" I thought I could let her challenge (挑战) herself 3 a little bit of extra work.
"I do have time and have 4 to do," she said. "But I'm just an intern." I didn't know 5.
I remembered the time when I was an intern. I, too, finished my work 6. So I asked my supervisor, "Is there anything else that I can help with?" She happened to have 7 plan to write. So she let me do it.
I knew little about the job, but still tried to do it. My supervisor was satisfied with my work. Later, she told me, "You did help me a lot to 8."
She also showed me how to improve the plan. I learned a lot from her. 9, she came to believe in me. I got my job because of her recommendation (推荐). Yes, I was just an intern with little money, but I bought a 10 future with my extra work.
Ben started painting at the age of 3. He became very 1 at it and was already famous by the age of 5. He painted many beautiful and interesting paintings. A lot of people bought his paintings at 2 prices.
They said, "This boy will be more famous when he is a little 3 , and then we are going to 4 these pictures for more money."
Ben's paintings are quite 5 from those of other artists. He never paints on the whole canvas (画布). He paints on half of it and the other half is always left empty.
"That's very 6 and creative (有创意的)," everybody said. " 7 other painters have done that before!"
One day, somebody asked him, "Please tell me this, Ben. Why do you paint on the bottom (底) half of your pictures, 8 not on the top half?"
"Well, the reason is very simple," Ben answered with a smile. "Because I'm 9. My brushes (画笔) 10 reach very high."
What do people think of chuunibyou(中二病)? Let's take a look.
Zeng Jingxian, 16, Guangdong As far as I know, chuunibyou means people who have lots of fantasies (幻想). Sometimes it can be good, because they will work hard to make their dreams come true, such as becoming a sports star. But sometimes they might spend too much time daydreaming (做白日梦) without making any real effort. If that's the case, they may need to make some changes. |
|
Li Zihan, 13, Beijing We usually use the word "chuunibyou" when we tease (嘲笑) our friends if they do something funny. We use it mostly in a friendly way. However, those who are being made fun of could misunderstand (误解) the meaning and get sad or angry. It really depends. |
|
Wang Liren, a professor at Northeast Normal University When students reach puberty (青春期), they become eager (渴望的) to show that they're different and independent (独立的). Sometimes they overdo it. That's where chuunibyou comes from. However, there is no need to worry about it, because chuunibyou is just part of growing up. |
According to the non-profit organization (非营利组织) Food Allergy Research and Education, these foods cause (造成) 90 percent of all food allergies: cow milk, eggs, peanuts, fish , shellfish, tree nuts, wheat, soy.
Itching (痒), vomiting (呕吐) and stomachaches (腹痛)…food allergies (过敏) can be dangerous. People can even die (死亡) from them. What's worse, they are becoming more common (常见的) these days.
Kari Nadeau, an allergy expert (专家) at Stanford University in the US, did a study of food allergies worldwide. She found that while 3 percent of people had them in 1960, the number rose to 7 percent in 2018.
Nadeau said that one reason for this might be that we are exposed (暴露) to fewer microbiota (微生物群). Microbiota can "train" our bodies and stop us from getting allergies.
Our bodies are exposed to fewer microbiota these days. We live in cleaner homes. We stay indoors (室内) for longer hours. We are given more antibiotics (抗生素) as children – antibiotics kill microbiota.
Scientists say it's a good idea for babies to eat many different kinds of foods so that they can build up tolerance (耐受) in their early years. Having a pet cat or dog can also stop allergies from being developed.
① Vomiting. ② Headache. ③ Death. ④ Itching.

When we encourage(鼓励) someone, usually say jiayou in Chinese, which means "add oil". do we say so?
is an interesting story behind "add oil". It started with an official (官员) Zhang Ying (1791-1856). Zhang Ying lived during the Qing Dynasty (1644-1911). He was the zhifu (知府) of Xingyi, Guizhou. He wanted encourage more people there to study. He sent lower officials to walk around the city at night buckets (桶) of oil. At the time, people used oil lamps (灯) at night. When these officials heard people reading texts at night in their home, they would knock (敲门) on the door say, "The mayor adds for your lamp!" In this way, Zhang made sure that his city's students could study through the night.
Zhang did this for 13 years. Many of his city's young people became scholars (学者). Zhang's son Zhang Zhidong became one of the famous officials of the late Qing Dynasty. "Add oil" became everyday phrase.
The Arctic is on top of Earth. You might think that the Arctic is too cold for people to live in. But surprisingly, there are about 4 million people living there. That's the same population as the city of Taiyuan in Shanxi.
The polar bear (北极熊) is the most famous Arctic animal. But in fact, the Arctic is home to more than 21,000 species (物种). There are whales, Arctic foxes, walruses (海象), tundra swans (苔原天鹅) and many more.
A group of scientists recently came back from a one-year-long study in the Arctic. They have bad news: the Arctic is dying. The amount of Arctic sea ice is falling by around 3 percent every year. There will be no more ice during the summer in just a few decades (十年). Many animals, such as polar bears, hunt for their food on the ice. If they can't do this anymore, they will die of hunger.
