English people like talking about weather in different places. When two English people meet, they often talk about the weather after saying hello.
In England, it often rains. When people go to work in the sunny morning, they may go home from work in the rain.
If you visit England, you can find the weather there changes often. People can have summer in winter or have winter in summer. Sometimes, people can have four seasons in one day. So people have to change their clothes with the weather. English people enjoy talking about the weather. They think you are friendly if you talk about weather with them. Talking about the weather is a good way to talk with English people.
Talking about the weather should be the first thing you should remember when you visit England.
People in many countries have Father's Day. But they don't have it on the same day.
In the US, Father's Day is on the third Sunday of June. Some Chinese people have Father's Day on August 8. The Chinese words "eight" and "father" sound the same. So August 8 ("baba") sounds like "father" in Chinese.
Father's Day has a very short history. Where does the idea for the holiday come from? We should thank an American. In 1909 she wrote letters to some important people. In her letter she advised to make Father's Day on the third Sunday in June. They agreed with(同意) her. In June in 1910, people celebrated the first Father's Day in Washington.
On this day, children can show their love to their fathers. Some children may make cards or give presents to their fathers. On the cards, children will write "Thanks, father", "Best wishes for Father's Day" and so on. Father's Day is also a day for families to get together at home or in the restaurants.
Father's Day is a day for Dad. Good dads do a lot for children, it's lucky for a child to have a good dad.
Fanner John and Farmer Bob were neighbors. For more than 30 years, they were good friends.
Then their friendship stopped. It began with a small thing, then bitter (仇恨的) words, and then weeks without words. One morning John got up to find a stream (小溪) between the two farms. "It must be Bob," John thought.
Then one day there was a knock(敲门声) on John's door. He opened it to find a carpenter (木匠) standing at the doorway.
"I'm looking for a few days' work," the carpenter said.
"I do have a job for you," John said. "Look at that farm across the stream. That's my neighbor Bob. He dug a stream between the two farms. I want you to build a fence (栅栏) 一an 8-foot fence. I don't want to see his place or his face any more. I don't have such a neighbor! "
The carpenter said, "I think I know what to do, sir, and I'll be able to do a job and make you happy."
About sunset when the farmer returned, the carpenter finished his job. The farmer's eyes opened wide. There was no fence there at all!
It was a bridge! And the neighbor, Bob, was coming across, with his hand outstretched. "Hi, John! You're quite a good fellow to build this bridge!"
Then they met in the middle, taking each other's hands. 'Tm terribly sorry for what I have said and done. We should be good to each other," said Bob.
Then they turned to see the carpenter. He was ready to go. "No, wait! Stay a few days. I have a lot of other jobs for you," said John. "I'd love to stay," the carpenter said, "but I have more bridges to build."
