What will the house of the future look like? Could it have gardens on its walls, or a pool with fish for dinner? Architects(建筑师) believe that they are all possibilities. The only thing for sure is that the houses will be as green as possible.

    The tree house

Many architects in the world would like to build a "tree house." Like a leaf, the surface of the houses collects sunlight during the day. The energy can be used to heat water, produce electricity, and even create fresh air for the home. The "roof"(根) of the house is deep under the ground. It uses the soil (土壤)to the home's temperature.

    The Lizard house

Like a lizard (蜥蜴), changing color with the weather is the most important design of a lizard house. When it's in the bright sun,the cover of the house will turn dark to protect it from strong heat. During dark days, it turns white and takes in as much light and heat as possible to produce energy.

    Meals at home

This design is perhaps as much about the future of food production as architecture(建筑风格).It has gardens on the outside wall of the house. People can plant tomatoes, carrots and green tea on them. So every day in the morning, you just need to walk outside and collect your meals.

    Learning from the past

Looking to the future isn't the only way to be green, Sometimes, ancient techniques(古老的技术) can also help cut down energy use. For example, a chimney (烟囱) can be a useful condition because it is easier for hot air to flow out the chimney.

    1. (1) What is the best title of the passage?
A . Green house of the future B . The greener, the better C . How to build green houses D . Changes of the houses
    2. (2) We can heat water, produce electricity or create fresh air for the home ______.
A . with the root of a leaf B . with the energy from sunlight C . with the soil under the ground D . with gardens on its walls
    3. (3) What will happen to the cover of the lizard house when it's in the bright sun?
A . It will take in light. B . It will produce energy. C . It will turn dark. D . It will turn white.
    4. (4) The passage seems to tell us that meals at home in the future ______.
A . will be more delicious. B . need more cooks. C . cost as much as possible. D . will be greener.

The United States has always been a country of many cultures. Before Europeans came to North America, many groups of Native Americans lived here. Different Native American groups had different cultures. The first Europeans in the United States were from England and Holland, but immigrants(移民) came from all European countries. Many people also immigrated from Asia and Africa. Sadly, many Africans were brought to the United States as slaves. Many immigrants come from Latin America too. Today, the United States has people from more cultures than ever.

In the 19th century, people thought of the United States as a "melting pot ". People thought that all immigrates should forget their native cultures and languages and become English-speaking Americans. They felt that people should assimilate culture. However, not everyone wanted to assimilate completely. Many people tried to keep parts of their cultures, such as foods, customs, and languages. However, their children often forgot their parents' or grandparents' language. But most Americans, even those whose families have been here a long time, can tell where their relatives came from. And of course, new immigrants take great pride in their cultures and languages.

For all of these reasons, melting pot is no longer a good way to describe the United States. Instead, people now call the United States a "salad bowl". They say salad bowl because in a salad, you can still see all of the individual parts (lettuce, tomato, and so on), but all the different parts mixed together and begin to take on the flavor of one another.

    1. (1) The first paragraph mainly talks about ______ .
A . how many immigrants the United States have B . where the immigrants live in the United States C . what culture and language the immigrants keep D . why the United States is a country of many cultures
    2. (2) The underlined word "assimilate" in paragraph 2 means "______".
A . make something similar B . make something special C . make something different D . make something interesting
    3. (3) Why do people call the United States a "salad bowl" now?
A . Because Americans can make all the cultures into one culture. B . Because Americans all want to eat salad to be healthy very much. C . Because Americans want their country to be as "green" as "salad". D . Because Americans can make different cultures go together in one country.

There were smiling children all the way. Clearly they knew at what time the train passed their homes and they made it their business to stand along the railway, wave to complete strangers and cheer them up as they rushed towards Penang. Often whole families stood outside their homes and waved and smiled as if those on the trains were their favourite relative. These were the simple village people of Malaysia. I was moved.

I had always travelled to Malaysia by plane or car, but this was the first time I was on a train. I did not particularly relish the long train journey and had brought along a dozen magazines to read and reread. I looked around the train. There was not one familiar face. I sighed(叹气)and sat down to read The Economics.

It was not long before the train was across the Causeway and in Malaysia, Johor Bahru was just another city like Singapore, so I was tired of looking at the crowds of people as they hurried past. As we went beyond the city, I watched the straight rows of rubber trees and miles and miles of green, Then the first village came into sight. Immediately I came alive. I decided to wave back.

From then on my journey became interesting. I threw my magazines into the waste basket and decided to join in Malaysian life. Then everything came alive. The mountains seemed to speak to me. Even the trees were smiling, I stared at everything as if I were looking at it for the first time.

The day passed fast and I even forgot to have my lunch until I felt hungry. I looked at my watch and was surprised that it was 3:00 pm. Soon the train pulled up at Butterworth. I looked at the people all around me. They all looked beautiful. When my uncle arrived with a smile, I threw my arms around him to give him a warm hug.I had never done this before. He seemed surprised and then his weather-beaten(饱经风霜的)face warmed up with a huge smile. We walked arm in arm to his car.

I looked forward to the return journey.

    1. (1) The author expected the train trip to be______.
      A . adventurous B . exciting C . pleasant D . dull
    2. (2) What did the author remember most during her train trip?
A . The friendly country people. B . The mountains along the way. C . The crowds of people in the streets D . The simple lunch served on the train

      A . Choose B . Enjoy C . Prepare for. D . Carry on.
    4. (4) What can we learn from the story?
A . Comfort in travelling by train. B . Reading gives people delight. C . Pleasure of living in the country. D . Smile brighten people up.
