Once upon a time, there lived a girl in ancient China named Mulan. Her father used to be a general who was too old and weak to fight, but not too old to teach her how to ride a horse and use a sword. Girls usually did not learn these skills at that time. But Mulan's father believed everyone should know how to fight, even girls. And Mulan also believed that girls could be as brave as men.

One day, the emperor(皇帝)sent soldiers to Mulan's village. Because war was coming, men were needed for the army. The military leader of the soldiers put up a list of names in the village square. Each name represented one man from each family.

Mulan saw her father's name on the list. She knew her father couldn't fight in a war. Mulan's brother was a little child. There was only Mulan who take her father's place. But the army did not take girls as replacements for fighting men.

Her family greeted her with joy. Her brother was pleased with the gift of her military clothes. Mulan dressed once again in the clothes of a woman. That evening, Mulan and her family got together to watch the sunset.

Two of the men who had worked with Mulan in the war stopped by her home on their way home. When Mulan greeted them, they could not believe their eyes. One of them shouted, "Are you really Mulan?"

  • 4. 阅读下列短文,从每题所给的A、B、C和D项中,选出最佳选项。

Living and dealing with kids can be a tough job these days, but living and dealing with parents can be even tougher.

If I learned anything in my 16 years, it is that communication is very important, both when you disagree and when you get along. With any relationship, you need to let other persons know how you are feeling. If you are not able to communicate, you drift apart. When you are mad at your parents, or anyone else, not talking to them doesn't solve anything.

Communication begins with the concerns (关心)of another. It means that you can't just come home from school, go up to your room and ignore(不理睬)anyone. Even if you just say "Hi", and see how their day was for five minutes, it is better than nothing.

If you looked up the word "communication" in a dictionary, it would say "the exchange of ideas, the conveyance(表达)of information, correspondence(通信), means of communication: a letter or a message". To keep a good relationship, you must keep communication strong. Let people know how you feel, even if it's just by writing a note.

When dealing with parents, you always have to make them feel good about how they are doing as a parent. If you are trying to make them see something as you see it, tell them that you'll listen to what they have to say, or ask them politely to listen to you. Yelling or walking away only makes the situation worse.

This is an example: one night, Sophie went to a street party with her friends. She knew she had to be home by midnight after the fireworks, but she didn't feel she could leave earlier. That would be rude. After all, they had been nice enough to take her along with them. Needless to say, she was late getting home. Her parents were mad at first. But when Sophie explained why she was late, they weren't mad any more and let the incident go. Communication is the key factor(因素)here. If Sophie's parents had not been willing to listen, Sophie would have been in a lot of trouble.

Communication isn't a one-way deal: it goes both ways. Just remember: if you get into a situation like Sophie's, tell the other person how you feel and listening to the other is also the key factor to communication.

    1. (1) In the writer's view, dealing with parents is ______ than with children.
      A . more difficult B . easier C . more important D . more interesting
    2. (2) The second paragraph mainly tells us about ______.
A . the importance of friendship B . the ways to solve the disagreement C . the importance of communication D . the disagreement between generations
    3. (3) The example in this passage proves that ______.
A . Sophie's parents are willing to listen to her. B . Sophie is very polite to her parents. C . Sophie did well in explaining her being late. D . communication is the solution(解决方法)to misunderstanding.
    4. (4) All the statements are correct EXCEPT "______".
A . If you don't agree with others, you'd better let them know. B . It's better to say "Hi" to others than say nothing. C . If you are not able to communicate, walk away. D . Communication is a two-way deal.
  • 5. 阅读下列短文,从每题所给的A、B、C和D项中,选出最佳选项。

Nutrition(营养学)experts put forward advice on how to eat well — and, most importantly, not lose your mind doing it. And there are some tips that stand the test of time, and that experts themselves follow. Here are some habits they live by — and that will change the way you eat.

    Eat lunch like a king

You've heard to make breakfast the biggest meal of your day, but you may not be that hungry when you wake up. In fact, "your biggest meal should be around noon when your digestion(消化)is at its peak and you can feed your body when it actually needs fuel," says Dr Lipman. At lunch, preference of protein(蛋白质)and greens is suggested, like a hearty(丰盛的)bowl of lentil soup and kale salad. You don't need a huge meal at dinner only to sit and catch up on some TV plays and then go to bed.

    Eat the rainbow

Greens, oranges, reds, purples, yellows ... you get the picture. Eating the rainbow will provide your body with kinds of disease-fighting phytonutrients(植物营养素), and will naturally fill you up to help you say "no" to unhealthy foods, says Lipman. Plus, most adults struggle with getting the recommended five kinds of fruits and vegetables a day (though some say seven kinds). A worldwide study in 2018 found 58% to 88% of adults don't hit that mark. In another study, adults who were offered all kinds of vegetables ate more of them without increasing the calories at the meal, found in a 2017 study.

    Know where your snacks are

Increased snacking is one reason behind the rise in calorie over the past few decades, according to a 2017 study in PLOS ONE. Sure, you don't know if you'll be hungry some time between the meals. But, "When you leave your office to go find something, that's when bad choices are made," says Schapiro. "That's when a hot pretzel, bag of candy, or donut can look very attractive." Make sure to keep in your drawer or fridge some healthy snacks, like Greek yogurt, individual packs of nuts, dried fruit.

    1. (1) What do nutrition experts advise people to do?
A . Eat a large amount of food at dinner. B . Eat fruits and vegetables of many kinds of colors. C . Stop eating all kinds of snacks. D . Store a bag of candy or donut in the drawer or fridge.
    2. (2) What would be a good advice for lunch?
A . A bowl of lentil soup and cupcake. B . French fries and beef. C . Steamed fish and broccoli(西蓝花). D . Hamburger and kale salad.
    3. (3) According to the passage, which is NOT the advantages of eating the "rainbow"?
A . It helps you fight against disease. B . It keeps you from unhealthy food. C . It won't bring a rise in calorie intake. D . It helps with your digestion.
    4. (4) The writer supports his ideas by using the following ways EXCEPT ______.
      A . examples B . numbers from scientific studies C . Experts' statements D . pictures

    Dear Victor,

I have received your letter from school and I am glad to know that you are becoming responsible enough to decide on your career.

You are now in the final year of high school and are going to start further education in college. You know that we belong to different times, and my social life is different from yours. However, all I can say as advice is that you must choose a career wisely. The first consideration is your interest. You can only succeed and feel happy when you do something you enjoy. You must get a job which not only provides you with something useful, but also you are pleased with. Then, you must read a lot in the field you are aiming at. Also, you should get to know the men and women who work in that field. When mind and heart work together, success is inevitable.

No career is more or less important. I think your interest may be in the field of making TV programs. Your good communication skills, your taking an active part in school plays and the prizes you have won in speech competitions all lead you to that direction. So a career in Mass Communication and TV film production will bring luck to you. If you succeed in that field, you will become famous and rich.

Think a thousand times before making any final decision about your career. After all, we want you to be a man of success.

We all know that you are old enough to think for yourself. With all the best wishes!

    Your loving father
