One day, a student asked his teacher, "What is greed(贪婪)?" The teacher didn't answer his question directly, but asked the student 1 through the chocolate factory next to their school and pick out the biggest chocolate bar he could find. But there 2 a rule: as he passed through the factory, he could not turn back.
The student went to the chocolate factory. As he walked, he saw a large chocolate bar. He liked it, but thought he might be able to find a 3 one if he kept going. He kept walking and saw4chocolate bar. This one was a little bigger. But again, he thought he could find 5even bigger one if he kept going. He nearly got to the end of the factory, but none of the bars that he saw were as large as the earlier6 . He started to regret his decision to keep going. Finally, he gave up. He went back to his teacher empty-handed and explained 7had happened.
The teacher told him, "You liked the first chocolate bar, 8 you kept looking for a bigger one. And later, you realized that you had given up the best chocolate bar 9 you thought you could do better. That 10 greed."
Did you know that 11,000 people die every day from smoking? Did you know that people die every day from breathing smoke1other people's cigarettes?
Tobacco smoke has 43 ingredients (成分) that may2cancer. If smokers had learned these3when they were young, they probably would never have started smoking.
Most smokers try4first cigarette when they are teenagers. Often, they start smoking because they think that it makes them look more5. Sometimes they start smoking because their friends tell them that it's cool. If teenagers are told that half of them will die before the age of 65 from smoking cigarettes, how can they still think it's cool to smoke?
One of the biggest problems is cigarette advertisements. Tobacco companies6 tell the truth to teenagers about cigarettes. After watching the advertisements on TV or looking at the posters in which people ride horses or play in a rock band, young people often think that smoking7be cool.
Sadly, cigarettes are very difficult to8once a person has started smoking. Most teenagers start smoking 9 they are influenced by friends or cigarettes advertisements. And often, the teenagers regret the decision to start smoking later in life.

The UN Environment Programme says that rising temperatures could mean the end for some migrating (迁徙) animals.
Migrating animals move through several environments as they travel away from the cold areas in winter to warmer ones. Birds may fly from one part of the world to another, perhaps stopping at feeding grounds on the way. Whales and turtles travel through huge areas of ocean. A report says that changes in any one of the places where these animals stay can cause serious problems. "Obviously these animals have developed their travelling ways over thousands of years. But weather change is much greater over the next 25 to 50 years and it is impossible for these animals to change their habits fast enough," said the report writer Dr. Robert Hepworth.
Turtles are hit hardest by rising temperatures. Scientists have found that at higher temperatures, turtles have far more female(雌性) eggs than male ones. In parts of Malaysia, turtles are only giving birth to female babies. And some turtles are more probable(可能的) to develop cancer as the waters get warmer.
With birds, the main problem is the harm to important areas at the end of their travels or at resting places along the way. About one-fifth of migrating birds are now in danger because of these changes including rising sea levels, land loss and more strong storms.
Some other animals are now in great danger. For example, the North Atlantic Right Whale (北大西洋露脊鲸)is losing their food because of the changing ocean flows(流动); the White-Nose Dolphin is out-competed (淘汰) by other kinds in warmer waters.
The report is not all bad news. Even with the temperature changing, protecting the environment can still help migrating animals return. "We need governments to start taking action all over the world. The clock is ticking. We should make full use of every minute." said Dr Hepworth. And now some projects are already working! Whales are changing their feeding habits, finding new feeding grounds and new foods to eat.

When I was about twelve years old, a girl in my class liked to point out my shortcomings. She said I was very thin; I wasn't good at math; I talked too; I was too proud, and so on. At last, I became very angry. I ran to my father with tears in my . He to me quietly, and asked, "Are those things true or not? Jane, didn't you ever think about you're really like?" Then he added, "Well, you have that girl's opinions. a list of everything she said and mark the points that are true."
I did as he told me. To my great surprise, I found out that about half the things were . Some of them I couldn't change, like being very thin, many I could and suddenly I wanted to change. For the first time I got a clear picture of .
I brought the list back to Daddy, and he said, "Now you know about yourself. But you have to learn to listen, not just close your ears and feel hurt. When something said about you is true, you'll find it helpful to you. Don't shut your ears. Listen to the truth and do what you know is the right thing to do."
Gases from cars are making the air dirty. Dirty water from factories pollutes the rivers. But things may be different in 10 years in Dongtan on Chongming Island, near Shanghai. Dongtan will become the world's first green city in 2030. The city's houses will be around shops, post offices, schools and hospitals. People won't have to travel far every day. Most people will walk or ride bikes to work or to school. There will be more bicycle ways and walk ways than other cities. Buses in the city will use batteries and won't use gases. Buildings will be less than eight floors high and have plants on the tops of buildings. In summer, the plants can help keep homes cool to save electric power. And there will be its own sea wind power station in the city. 80% of the city's trash will be used again. In fact, people in Dongtan will use half the water that people in Shanghai use. Scientists say that Dongtan will be a green city for others to copy. If the city is successful, many other cities in China will follow the example.
