During the day we work and play, and at night we sleep. Our body rests when we sleep. In the morning we are ready to work and play again. Our body grows most when we are asleep. Children who are tired usually need sleep. We can get better at our lessons after having plenty of rest. Boys and girls who are eight or nine years old need ten hours of sleep every night. Our body needs plenty of air when we are asleep. If we do not get enough fresh air, we will feel tired when we wake up. While in bed we must not cover（覆盖）our head, our lungs need to get enough fresh air. If we open our windows at night, we can have plenty of fresh air. Cool air is better than warm air.

Sally has a new bike and she likes sports. So she rides her bike to school every day. It takes her about 10 minutes. Jim, Sally's brother, is shorter and thinner than her. But he likes sports, too. Every day he walks to school, and his home is about two miles from school. It takes him about twenty minutes. He thinks it helps him to keep fit and study well. Every morning, Sally and Jim get up at the same time, but Jim is faster than his sister.  He leaves for school at seven. His sister goes to school at seven ten.   They both get to school at about twenty past seven.

In 1998, Word Cup started in France. Thousands of people went to the game or watched them on TV day and night. They were all very excited and hoped that their favorite team would win the last game and became the world's best.

Football is a team sport. There are eleven players in each team in a game. The earlies（t  最早）game of football in England were not like what we know today. At that time, games were played between two towns（城镇）. Each team of the town had more than five hundred players, and each team had to try their best to carry the ball to the other fan's town. Today some towns in England still play games like this.

I had to get up at six o'clock every morning and ride my bike five miles to school. In winter, it was very cold,  but I didn't mind. I liked to exercise.

We wore uniforms to school, not like Canadian kids today. Some of the girls liked their school uniforms（校服）,  We had to wear ugly straw（草）hats!

Our school wasn't in a very good place.  Sometimes it was difficult to hear the teacher because of all the trains outside. The school was small, too, and the classrooms were very crowded（拥挤的）. There were usually forty or fifty students in every class.

There was no TV at that time,  I remember our geography textbook had beautiful photos   from far away places like India, China and Africa. Geography was really interesting for kids in those days!

Families were poor because it was the time of the Great Depression（萧条期）. I wore my elder brother's old uniform. My shoes had holes（洞）where you could see my feet. It was terrible！

 I loved to play baseball and ice hockey after class. But we played ice hockey（ 冰 球 ）on frozen ponds（结冰的池塘）. Not inside like the kids today.
