I dreamed of being a football star when I was a high school student. During my first year there I was a very 1 boy. I was only 50kg. I joined in some football games but spent most of my time 2 on the bench (替补队员席). So I decided to do 3. Drinking a lot of milk made me much 4. Before the football season started, I thought I could make 5 succeed in being stronger at last. But I was soon 6 when I saw that I was still smaller than most of the other boys.
During one of the 7 of the season, the teacher let me play first. I was 8 and jumped up and down. But I still lost.
I lost many times. I hoped to be a 9 player. But finally I found that I couldn't make it 10. For a long time I was really unhappy about this and thought about giving up. 11 as time went by, I knew that enjoying the feeling (感觉) of working hard was necessary. In fact, the 12 wasn't the most important thing. Now, my friend is celebrating for me in a party because I 13 a football game this morning. I didn't succeed before. It is the 14 time that I have won a football game. I succeed after lots of 15. I never give up and fight on.
Do you want to know about my staying in America? It was really an eye-opening experience. In China, I had English classes five times a week. However, I didn't know how different textbook English was from daily English until I went to Hotchkiss School, Connecticut. When I first studied English, I was told to say "I'm fine" when people say "How are you?" But in America, I found that people said "I'm good" or "I'm tired. " One day, someone greeted me with "What's up?" It made me confused. I thought for a moment and then smiled because I didn't know what to say.
To my surprise, American girls spend a lot of time in the burning sun. However, in China, girls try every possible way to get their skin whiter. I'm also surprised by how hard-working American students are. In China, schoolwork is almost everything, so we study hard. But in America, a good student gets good grades, does a lot for the public and plays sports or music.
What do you usually do in your free time? Do you watch short videos on some apps? According to the China Internet Network Information Center, the number of short video users reached 773 million (百万) in March, 2020. That is, about 86% of all Chinese Internet users are watching or making short videos, or both! If you say short videos are only popular in China, you are wrong. TikTok has more than 800 million users around the world.
Many users like short videos. They say the videos not only make them relax, but also teach them useful skills (技能). "I love watching Lao Qiao's short videos on my phone," Francis, one of the short video users, says. "Lao Qiao is a famous cook and his videos are my favorite ones. From his videos, people can learn how to make Shanxi noodles in no time at all. "However, quite a few people think short videos are not that good. "There are many other ways to relax, like watching movies, reading books and playing sports," they say. "All of them are more meaningful to people."
What's more, if people start watching the short videos, they can hardly stop. There are always new ones waiting for them, so they always spend hours on them. Some educators say people should not spend much time on short videos. "Most of them are just for fun," they say. "They don't teach people to think or to improve themselves. It's not good for the people, and not good for society (社会), either. "
"Wash your hands often and carefully, with soap and water!" We often hear this, but do you follow it? As we know, washing hands is important to our health. There's even a day to make us do it and know more about its importance. It is Global Hand-washing Day and it's on October 15. During the outbreak of COVID-19 this year, washing hands plays an even more important role in preventing the virus (病毒) from going around.
People think of Doctor Semmelweis from Hungary as the first person to find out the good results of hand washing. He pointed out the importance of hand washing to doctors, because they often worked with people who are seriously ill. And he saved a lot of people's lives by telling doctors to wash hands with chlorine (氯) before each examination (检查). After that, the number of dead patients became much smaller.
You might think everyone would be excited, because Dr. Semmelweis solved the big problem. But in fact things were quite different. Although Dr. Semmelweis kept asking doctors to wash their hands with chlorine, not every doctor accepted (接受) his idea. Some even sent him to a mental hospital. His idea became really popular years after he died.
Now that washing hands is of great importance, we should do it as carefully as we can. What's more, it's necessary to wash our hands in right ways.
