Soapy sat on a seat in Madison Square, New York, and looked up at the sky. A dead leaf fell onto his arm. 1 was coming, and Soapy knew that he must make his plans. He moved unhappily on his seat.
He wanted three months in a nice, warm prison (监狱), with food and good friends. This is 2 he usually spent his winter. And now it was time, because, at night on his seat in the square, three newspapers did not 3the cold.
So Soapy decided to go to prison, and at once began to try his 4 plan. It was usually 5. He ate dinner at an expensive restaurant. Then he told them he had no 6 and they called a policeman. Nice and easy, with no trouble.
7 Soapy left his seat, and walked slowly along the street. Soon he came to a bright restaurant on Broadway. But when Soapy went 8 the restaurant, the waiter saw Soapy's dirty old trousers and 9 shoes. Strong hands turned him round and helped him out into the street again.
Now he had to 10 something different. Soapy walked and walked. He stopped in front of a shop window and looked at it. It was nice and bright, and everybody in the street could see him. Slowly and 11 he picked up a stone and threw it at the window. The 12 broke with a loud noise. People ran round the corner and Soapy was 13, because the man in front of him was a policeman. Soapy did not move. He 14 there with his hands in his pockets, and he smiled. "I'll 15 be in prison now," he thought.

Chinese people are famous for being friendly and generous (慷慨的). Many even feel that they lose face if their guests have eaten all the food on the table. Luckily, a number of people have realized the importance of saving food. What should we do in our daily lives to waster less food?
⒈Don't order too much in a restaurant. Only order as much as you want to eat. If you can't eat all the food you ordered, take the rest of it home.
⒉Don't leave any food in your bowls while having meals.
⒊Keep an eye on what food you have at home. Don't buy too much, especially for vegetables and fruit.
There was a lovely vegetable patch (菜园). A large tree grew there. Both the patch and the tree gave the place a wonderful look, and they were the pride (骄傲) of the gardener. But no one knew that the vegetables and the tree couldn't stand each other. The vegetables hated the tree's shadow, because it left them only just enough light to live. The tree, on the other hand, hated the vegetables because they drank almost all of the water, leaving him just enough to live.
It became so serious that the vegetables decided to use up all the water in the ground so that the tree would die. The tree answered back by not protecting the vegetables from the hot sun, so they began to dry up. Soon the vegetables were really weak, and the tree was drying up.
The gardener wanted to know why and stopped watering them. When he did that, both the tree and the vegetables realized that it was better to help each other. They learned how to live in harmony (和谐) with those around them. So they decided to work together, using both the shade and the water to grow well. After seeing how well they were doing, the gardener gave the best care to his vegetable patch, watering and fertilizing (施肥) it better than any other patch for miles around.

Do you have true friends? Do you want to know better between you and your friends? There are three different kinds of friends: "pest friends", "guest friends", and "best friends".
The first kind of friend is simply acquaintances (熟人), and all you usually know about them is their names. You may meet this kind of friend at school, at work, or on the bus, but you don't miss them when they're not around. When this kind of friend does something bad, you don't tell them. That is why they are called "pest friends".
The second kind of friend could also be called "social partners". They are closer than acquaintances, but not as close as true friends. You know their names, a little of what they like or dislike, and a little of their family histories; you usually have a few things in common, but you don't talk about anything deep, such as your wishes or fears, and they don't open up to you how they really feel.
The last kind of friend, the "best friend", is the one you know the deepest. You're like family, and know everything about each other. You have no problem staying at each other's houses, and you share your deepest feelings and thoughts. They will correct you when you're wrong, sometimes they may not be perfect, but at least they will always care about you, and never do anything on purpose(故意地) to hurt you.
We all have our pest, guest, and best friends. We should value all friendships and remember, all best friends start out as just acquaintances.
