Do you have brown hair? Are you taller than other kids your age? These characteristics were decided before you were born. You got your traits from your parents. They passed their traits on to you through genes (基因).

Genes carry codes (代码) for blue eyes or brown eyes. Genes say how tall you will get and what color hair you will have. You got half of your genes from your mother. You got half of your genes from your father. So you have your own set of genes. Each person gets different genes for each body part. That is why you look like but not exactly like your brother or sister.

A dominant (显性的)  gene shows up most of the time. Brown eyes are dominant over blue eyes. A recessive (降性的) gene shows up less often. Light hair comes from a recessive gene. Dark hair is more common. Look at the eye color and hair color of the people around you. You will see that this is true.

Genes help to make you who you are. But they don't tell the whole story. Your genes may help you to be fast and strong. But you still need to learn how to run or swim or skate well .

    1. (1) The underlined word "traits" in Paragraph 1 means________.
      A . characteristics B . experiences C . achievements D . possibilities
    2. (2) According to Paragraph 3, you can see most of the people around you have________.
A . brown eyes with dark hair B . brown eyes with light hair C . blue eyes with dark hair D . blue eyes with light hair
    3. (3) What is the passage mainly about?
A . Genes carry codes for eyes and hair. B . Genes help to make you who you are. C . Genes help you to be fast and strong. D . Genes make brothers look similar.

As an English, I can speak three languages—English, German and French, so do you think the British people are very good language learners? The fact is that they aren't.Some statistics (数据) from the survey done by the European Commission (欧盟委员会) showed that 62% of the British people only speak English. 38% speak at least one foreign language and 18% speak two or more. Compared with the British people, 56% of the people in other European countries speak at least one foreign language and 28% speak two or more.

From this you can see that the British people are famous for not speaking foreign languages and that they are not good language learners in Europe.

And the survey also showed that English is the most widely-spoken foreign language. Many European people can have a conversation in English. That's why my people don't think it is necessary to learn a foreign language.

In Britain, students are not required to learn a foreign language. That means learning a foreign language is only an option at school. In UK schools it is common for children to start learning a foreign language at 11 and many of them give it up at 14. So why don't students continue learning foreign languages at school? Because they think it is more difficult to get good marks in languages than in other subjects such as science or history.

To solve this situation, the British government is looking for different ways to improve language learning at school. One way is to start learning it at a much younger age. Another one is to give school children more choices.

Changing the British attitude (态度) to learning foreign languages may be a hard task but the government decides to try!

    1. (1) Which of the following about the British people is true?
A . They are good language learners. B . 62% of them speak two or more languages. C . They are famous for speaking foreign languages. D . More than half of them only speak English.
    2. (2) According to the passage, students in Britain prefer to learn _______.
A . science or German B . history or German C . science or history D . German or French
    3. (3) In Paragraph 4, "an option" means _______.
      A . a choice B . a game C . a mistake D . a conversation
    4. (4) What is the best title of the passage?
A . Speaking English B . Foreign Language Learning in UK C . Schools in UK D . Young English Learners

I will never forget my experiences in the United States. I went to an American college a year ago. Yet I did not know the real American society until I was hurt in a car accident because after the accident I had to see a doctor and go to court(法院).

After the accident, my roommate called a doctor for me. I was very grateful and decided to repay him one day. But the next day, he asked me to pay him $200 for what he had done. I was amazed. He had good reason to charge me, he said. And if I wanted to collect money from the person who was responsible(负有责任的) for my accident, I'd have to have a good lawyer. And only a good doctor can help me get a good lawyer. Now that he had helped me find a good doctor, it was only fair that I should pay him. But every day I went to see the doctor, I had to wait about 50 minutes. He would see two or three patients at the same time, and often stop treating one so as to see another. Yet he charged me $115 each time. The final examination report consisted of ten lines, and it cost me $215. My lawyer was all smiles the first time we met. But after that he avoided seeing me at all. He knew very well the other party was responsible for the accident, yet he hardly did anything. He simply waited to collect his money. He was so irresponsible that I decided to refuse his help. And he made me pay him $770.

Now I had to act as my own lawyer. I told the insurance(保险)company the date I was leaving America because of my inexperience(缺少经验). Knowing that, they played for time and I left without getting a cent.

My experiences taught me two things about America: firstly, in a country like America money is everything. It is more important than friendship, honor or professional morality. Secondly, foreigners are still being unfairly treated. So when we talk about America, we should see both its good and bad sides.

    1. (1) The writer's roommate offered to help him because_________.
A . he thought it was a chance to make some money  B . he felt sorry for the writer C . he knew the doctor was a very good one   D . he wanted the writer to have a good lawyer
    2. (2) A good lawyer is important for the writer to __________.
A . be well treated by the doctor B . talk with the person responsible for the accident C . get what he should pay for his injury D . get well before he leaves that country.
    3. (3) The underlined word "charge" in the second paragraph means ________.
      A . 职责 B . 掌管 C . 索价 D . 命令
    4. (4) What conclusion can you draw from the story?
A . Going to court is something very common in America. B . One must be very careful while driving a car. C . Money is more important than other things in the US. D . There are more bad sides in America than good sides.

    Lizzie-s diary from Antarctica (南极洲)

    Day 3: Tuesday, December 2

We planned to go to Rothera that morning. We'd be staying there for the next two weeks. Because Antarctica is the windiest place on earth, sometimes you can't fly at all.

We had a nervous wait over breakfast to find out if we'd be leaving that day. People have to stay in Stanley for weeks while the pilots wait for good weather

It turned clear at 9:30 and we took off at 10:30 on a little red plane called a Dash-7. But even when we were in the air, there was still a chance we wouldn't be able to fly the whole day.

    Day 4: Wednesday, December 3

After waking up in the Antarctic for the first time today I can understand why everybody who comes here falls in love with the place. It is really beautiful.

We're staying at Rothera Survey base with mountains of ice all around. It s about minus 20C today, which for me is very cold, but the regulars(常客) here are often seen walking around in T-shirts !

    Day 5: Thursday, December 4

I woke up to another beautiful sunny day here in the Antarctic. I'm told it's a bit colder today, about minus 50C , but it's not very windy so it feels warmer. Those of us who are new to the base have to do a special training course before we're allowed to go off base to other stations or to go snowboarding over the nearby hill.

    Day 7: Saturday, December 6

Not a cloud in the sky and it's warm enough to sit outside (in a jacket).

The most amazing thing about this place is how the scenery (凤景) changes every day.At first I thought I was going mad. I'd step outside in the morning and think, "I'm sure that big mountain of ice wasn't there yesterday." It's because the sea ice is always moving—slowly thankfully !

    1. (1) Lizzie sat outside wearing a jacket on_________.
      A . Tuesday B . Wednesday C . Thursday D . Saturday
    2. (2) What could stop Lizzie from leaving Stanley for Rothera?
      A . Strong winds. B . Thick clouds. C . Mountains of ice. D . Low temperatures.
    3. (3) How did Lizzie feel during her stay in the Antarctic?
      A . Afraid. B . Nervous. C . Amazed. D . Bored.
    4. (4) What impressed Lizzie most about Rothera was that _________.
A . people walked around in T-shirts B . there was a special training course C . the weather was sometimes warm D . the scenery changed every day

It's even better to tell your guests the duration(持续时间) of the party.

The next thing you should write on your invitation is the exact place where the party will be held. Maybe some of your guests don't know the location.  We know everyone can search online for it, but it's very nice to provide the information for the people who don't know much about the place.

In this way, your guests can have enough time to prepare for your party.

     A. If so, you should also include directions in the invitation.

    B. But do you know how to write a party invitation?
