"Why not have a race with him?" said Larry.
"Good idea!" said Nick. "I'll have a race with him after school."
After school, Nick went to the playground. He did some warm-up exercises for half an hour, and got ready for the race. He was sure that he could win it. Larry had to take part in a club activity that afternoon, so he could not watch the race between Nick and David.
That evening Larry went to see Nick. They began to talk about the afternoon race. Nick's grandmother heard them in the next room. She came in and asked, "Which place?"
"The second place," answered Nick.
His grandmother was very happy to hear that, and asked, "Which place did David win, then?"
"The last but one."
Almost every family buys at least one copy of a newspaper every day. Some people can have as many as two or three different newspapers. But why do people read newspapers?
Five hundred years ago, news of important happenings, such as battles lost and won, kings or rulers(统治者) overthrown(推翻) or killed, took months and even years to travel from one country to another. The news passed by words of mouth. Today we can read in our newspapers of important things that happen in faraway countries at the same time.
Besides giving news from all over the world, newspapers tell us a lot of other useful information. There are weather reports, as well as radio, television and film guides. There are also book reviews, stories, and of course, advertisements(广告). There are all kinds of advertisements. They pay the newspapers thousands of dollars for the advertising space (广告版面), but it is worth the money because news of what they make in factories goes into almost every home in the country. For those who make newspapers, advertisements are also very important. Money from advertisements makes it possible for them to sell their newspapers at a low price and still make a profit(利润).
There is no doubt that mothers play an important role in the lives of their children. But what about a father's role? My belief is that fathers play just as important a role as mothers.
Fathers give us support. They are the shore we swim to when our arms and legs feel tired. They are the strength we rely on as we take our first step into the world. Fathers can be gentle and powerful, but they probably have the simplest love we ever know.
For daughters, the father is the first man they admire and the first man whose eyes shine with happiness when they look at them. He is the first man to fall in love with them.

For mothers, the father of our children is the person we can trust to watch over the babies as closely as we would. We are protected in the knowledge of their love. Come and meet my best friend, Lily. Lily is a beautiful girl. Many people like her because her good look. So do I. As my best friend, she likes to do same things me.
We like singing and reading books. There are also some between us. I am shy and I always like to stay by myself. Lily is much outgoing than me. She is in telling jokes. She often makes me . She is good at sports, too. She plays sports every day to keep healthy. She thinks it is not necessary for friends (to be) the same.

I look cute and (love), and I'm very big. There are many other animals in the place where I live. They're afraid to play me.
When I want to know what's(happen)around me, I stand up and take a good sniff (吸气). I have big paws (爪子). I often use them for digging. I climb trees (find) honey (蜂蜜) and I can swim (good).
I live by (I). But mum bears live with their babies.
The only time I stay with other bears is when we come together to the river to catch fish.
Fish is one of my favourite food. The other bears and I eat as (many)as we can catch. I love to eat clams, too.
I don't just eat seafood. I will eat anything I can get berries, fruit and (leaf). I also eat other animals. When winter comes, it will be (hard) to find food than before. I need to dig a den (洞穴) to sleep I have to stay there for six months. Mum bears give birth during the winter.
We know health and happiness are important to our life. Here are some ways to get them.
① Eat a lot of fruit and vegetable and less meat. Don't eat too much junk food.
② It is best to get about eight hours of sleep a day. It is very bad for our health if we don't have enough sleep.
③ It stops you from having bad habits. To keep yourself busy, you can work around the house, spend time with your pet, write letters to your friends, do a sport, or do anything you enjoy.
④ Spend time and have fun with people. Talk with them, but don't talk about anything bad. You should stay with the people who are healthy and happy.
Remember that nothing is more important than health and happiness.
