    My sport blog(博客)

    June 16th

We arrived in South Africa today. Things aren't looking too good for England. We only drew the first game, 1-1. The question now is: will we be able to enter next round? Well, our next two games are against Algeria(阿尔及利亚) and Slovenia(斯洛文尼亚), so our chances must be good.

    June 18th England vs. Algeria

We almost missed the beginning of the game because we weren't able to find a taxi to get us to the stadium(体育场). The game was awful! Our great hope, Rooney, didn't do much. Sometimes I think he'll never be able to score for England again! Well, perhaps he'll be better in the next game. Hope so.

    June 23rd England vs. Slovenia

We didn't see this live as we couldn't get tickets. So we watched it on a big screen in the city centre. It was great there, the atmosphere(氛围) was fantastic. There were people from all over the world and we could hear lots of different languages. We met some people from Slovenia. It's Germany next.

    June 26th

We managed to get tickets for the round of 16 game tomorrow. England vs. Germany. Just don't ask how much the tickets cost. We spent the rest of the day doing a bit of sightseeing. It was great but I wasn't able to stop thinking about the big game. I'm so excited.

" Were the birds on the ice ducks or geese (鹅)?" Cruz, 11, and Anthony, 12, couldn't agree. There was only one way to find out. So on a cold January evening, the two friends took a risk onto the frozen(冻结的) lake near their homes.

"First, we threw a stone onto the ice to test it. We thought it would hold our weight. Then we stepped on it," Cruz said. Anthony went first. He took a few steps, then... He fell through the seemingly frozen ice!

Cruz rushed to help his friend. The lake "ate" him, too. Cruz managed to lift himself out of the freezing water and onto some ice. He then tried to work his way toward Anthony. But the ice didn't hold, and he fell in again. This time, he couldn't get out.

The boys were up to their necks in icy water and quickly losing feeling in their arm sand legs. Cruz had a sense that he was going to die.

Anthony's older sister had seen all this and started shouting for help. John Lavin, a neighbor driving nearby heard her.  He quickly pulled over. He caught a nearby float(浮板), kicked off his shoes. And ran into the water, clearing his way through the ice with his free hand. "It was kind of a ' Hulk smash'" Lavin later joked.

Lavin made his way to pull the boys back to land. They were taken to hospital immediately. The doctor said their five-minute stay in the water made their body temperature drop nearly ten degrees. Luckily, the boys got well soon. They admire their fearless neighbor just as Hulk, one of Marvel Superheroes.

    What's your pain telling you?

Is that pain you feel in your back, neck or shoulders just a short ache from your new exercise menu? Or is there something deeper and more serious at work? Either way, you decide not to pay attention to it.

"Pain is a warning system; it tells us that something is wrong," says Bradford Butler, a doctor. "Continual pain goes further. It is telling you that a whole system in your body isn't working right."

For many people and their doctors, the first reaction for pain, and sometimes the second and third reactions as well, is to take some painkillers and go on your way.

"That doesn't solve the problem," Butler says. "Too often, with back pain, shoulder pain, neck pain or other continual pain, many doctors focus on reducing(减少) the pain rather than finding out the cause."

Imagine this, you wake up midnight with an unbearable toothache, and then visit a doctor who discovers a huge cavity(空洞)but, instead of repairing the cavity, just gives you some powerful medicine for the pain and sends you home." Left untreated, the pain would get worse and the damage to the tooth would worsen, leading to bigger and more expensive medical process later on, "Butler says.

Butler offers some advice for those whose bodies are trying to warn them that something is wrong.

Choose your doctor wisely. Blind faith (信任) in any doctor is not the answer. Butler says, "Doctors have their own specialty and make sure you find someone who will really help you with your problem."

Don't let your body resetting its pain level fool you. What happens when you let the pain go? Your body adapts (适应) . Butler says, "When your body gets used to the pain, you think the problem must be gone. While in reality, your body's pain setting has been raised. The only time you're feeling pain is when you're already in terrible poor condition. "

Think of prevention. Dental (牙科的) patients are encouraged to have regular check-ups, whether they're in pain or not, so the doctor can work on potential (潜在的)problems. "That's the way for other pain," Butler says. "Being free of symptoms(症状)doesn't mean you don't have big problems. It just means that you don't know they're developing. "

"We need to listen to our pain and fix whatever is wrong as soon as possible," Butler says. "You won't get better until you find the cause of the problem."

    1. (1) Bradford Butler probably believes that    .
A . reducing the pain is the most important B . finding out the cause of pain is too easy C . taking some painkillers can solve the problems D . continual pain warns you that something is seriously wrong
    2. (2) In Paragraph 5, the writer wants to tell us    .
A . medical process is not cheap B . getting fully treated is necessary C . repairing the cavity is very difficult D . powerful medicine is the best solution
    3. (3) What can we know from the passage?
A . Staying in terrible condition makes us fool. B . Having regular check-ups is only for dental patients. C . Finding the cause of the pain will make us healthier. D . Choosing a wise doctor is important from beginning to end.

A day is made up of hundreds of small decisions. I'll wear this; I'll buy this; I'll have this for lunch; I'll go there at 3 o'clock; I'll reply to this e-mail.

For some people, it's not a big deal. For others, however, making decisions isn't easy. They agonize over what to do, changing their minds back and forth, and second guessing themselves even after the decision has been made.

Emily was in the restaurant with her husband. After several minutes of reading the menu, she said, "Um, let's see. I don't know what to order. Maybe I'll have the burger; no wait, the pasta seems good. Or, maybe the soup and salad. Don, what are you ordering? OK; that sounds good; I'll have that too. " Don often gets annoyed (恼怒的) .He doesn't understand why she finds the simplest decisions so difficult. He sometimes makes decisions for the two of them. But Emil y gets annoyed with him for being so controlling. "But we'd never decide anything if I left it up to you," he argues.

Good decision-making is a skill that comes easily to some people, not so easily to others. Choices are confusing. Choices can make you anxious. They can cost you peace of mind, even after you've made the decision. The skill of good decision-making has become increasingly important. Why? Because we have a lot of choices, both with the simple and the serious things in life.

Decisions force us to close the door on other possibilities. Accept that you can't have it all. You can't order every delicious dish on the menu. And there will be paths not taken, things not experienced. Let the past be. Live in the present where what you do today will make a difference.

It's often good to think through your decisions, but don't overdo it. More thinking is not always better thinking. Too much research may lead to confusion. Sixth sense can help make decisions as good as careful study of endless data(数据), sometimes even better.

Some decisions don't work out as expected; this doesn't mean that you made a bad one. You decide to go on a cruise (油轮旅行). You choose a large and beautiful ship. Everything should work out just right. Only you didn't count on a bug that spread through the ship, making you and your family sick for five clays. You felt terrible for making such a stupid decision. No. You did not make a stupid decision. It's just that sometimes the unexpected happens.

Try to make your decision. After all, it's your special experience.6

    1. (1) The words "agonize over" in Paragraph 2 probably mean"    ".
A . think about a difficult decision carefully and with lots of effort B . stick to the big decision that you have made C . let go of the decision that you have made D . fear to make decision out of uncertainty
    2. (2) The writer mentioned Emily and her husband in Paragraph 3 to    .
A . criticize Emily's husband for controlling B . show how annoying indecisiveness could be C . introduce how hard it was to decide what to eat D . explain the difficulty Emily had when making a decision
    3. (3) What can we learn from the passage?
A . We should think about all the possibilities before making a good decision. B . Neither research nor data may help people with decision-making. C . Sometimes unexpected situation may waste a good decision. D . People feel terrible when making decisions.
    4. (4) Which of the following would be the best title for the passage?
A . Do you have difficulty making decisions? B . Are you good at making a difficult decision? C . Can you make a right decision easily or not? D . Would you like to make decisions for others?

    Small talk

Americans often have short conversations, called small talk, about unimportant things with strangers or people they know but not very well. They may have small talk at parties, while waiting in line at the store, at family events or work. It's a way to say hi and express friendliness.

Small talk is very useful. It can avoid uncomfortable silences and build stronger relationships. For example, when you first meet someone or talk to someone you don't know well, you can break the ice by making small talk. Small talk with a colleague(同事) about his child may help you to understand more of his life outside the office.

In 2013, researchers from the University of Essex asked some people to make small talk in a study. They found small talk can make people happier. People who talked briefly(短暂地) with a waiter in a coffee shop felt happier than those who simply went in, ordered and left.

However some people are not good at small talk. Here are some tips to improve your small-talking ability.

Firstly, find common ground. When you have something similar with your speaking partner, that means you have something to talk about.

Secondly, ask open-ended questions. They are suitable(合适的) for small talk. For example, if you ask visitors whether they like your city, they may simply say "Yes." But if you ask "What do you think of our city," they will have more freedom in how they answer.

Thirdly, become a student. Nobody knows everything. So, as someone is answering one of your open-ended questions, they bring up something about which you know nothing. So, tell them! This lets the other person become the teacher. They feel good about sharing their knowledge and you get to learn something. It's a win-win situation.

Finally, practice makes perfect. Like anything, getting good at making small talk takes practice.

If you make small talk in your native language, you might become happier. If you are making small talk using English, you will most surely improve your speaking and listening skills.

    1. (1) Do Americans often have small talk?
    2. (2) Why is small talk useful?
    3. (3) What did some researchers from the University of Essex find in 2013?
    4. (4) What kind of questions are suitable for small talk?
    5. (5) What does the writer tell us about small talk in the passage?
