London used to be 'foggy' for the same reason that cities like Beijing or Chongqing are 'foggy' today. The 'fog' was in fact smog, a mixture(混合物)of smoke and fog. In other words, it was made by air pollution. In London, some of this pollution came from factories, but much of it came from the coal(煤)that people burnt in their houses to keep warm during the winter. By the 1950s, London's smog problem had become so bad that the government decided to do something to clean the air. A new law was made and nobody could burn coal in any British city. Within a few years, the air became much cleaner. There were no more 'peasoupers'.

Many Chinese cities now face the same sort of problem with air pollution that London faced 40 or 50 years ago. However, this problem is more difficult for Chinese cities to solve. One reason is that more of the pollution comes from the factories, rather than from coal burnt in people's houses. If these factories were closed, this would harm the economy and lots of people would lose their jobs. Another reason is that changing from coal to cleaner fuel(燃料), like gas, is quite expensive.

However, the air in many Chinese cities is becoming cleaner and cleaner, as the government and people pay more and more attention to cutting down pollution. As a result, there are fewer 'pea-soupers' in Beijing than there used to be.

    3. (3) What does the underlined word 'pea-soupers' refer to?
      A . Smog B . Smoke C . Gas D . Coal
    4. (4) he problem of air pollution is more difficult for Chinese cities to solve because of             reasons.
      A . one B . two C . three D . four

Looking back over 2018 it might be better not to speak of" ups and downs(起起伏伏)", but of" downs and downs". The year seems to have been one piece of bad news after another. It had terrible disasters-two were Typhoon Mangkhut(山竹), which brought widespread damage to several countries this summer, and the wildfire in California, which took at least 85 lives.

In 2018 we also lost some of the top minds of humanity, including UK physicist Stephen Hawking, Chinese kung fu fiction writer Louis Cha Leung-yung, better known as Jin Yong, and Stan Lee, the US comic(漫画)book writer who created the Marvel universe.

This is why it comes as a warm surprise that, according to Google's" Year In Search 2018", people spent a lot of time searching for the "good" on the Internet. According to the video, which was released on Dec 12, people wanted to find answers to questions like "how to be a good friend".

In the video, we see the moment when a deaf child hears his mother's voice for the very first time. We see video of the Thailand boy soccer players after they were saved from a flooded cave with the help of volunteers from all over the world.

"We seem to miss all the good in the world, "wrote reporter Raka Mukherjee." The video shows us how, even in times of adversity, there is good-if only one makes the effort to look for it." So, it may be true that the past year was full of "down" moments. But it doesn't mean that we're letting it bring us down with it. As is said in the video, "The world is filled with people trying to do the best they can."

    3. (3) What does the underlined word 'adversity' refer to?
      A . "down" moment B . advantages C . "up" moment D . bright future
    4. (4) From the passage we can infer(推断)that     .
A . The video of the Thailand boy soccer players shows a sad story. B . The writer writes this article in order to tell us that 2018 is a sad year. C . The most important reason why people feel down is because they lost a lot of money in 2018. D . People search for the "good" on the Internet because they wanted to look for something good.
    5. (5) What does the reporter Raka Mukherjee think of 2018?
A . It is full of "downs and downs", so it makes people sad. B . We have already let the bad moments bring us down. C . We seem to miss all the good in the world. D . It's a sad year, but people are doing their best to keep the bad moments from bringing us down.
