Many teenagers feel the most important people in their lives are their friends. They believe their family members, and in particular(尤其是) their parents, don't know them as well as their friends do. In large families, it's quite often for brothers and sisters to fight with each other and then they can only go to their friends for advice. It's very important for teenagers to have good friends or a circle of friends, because friends can discuss something difficult to say to their family members.
However, parents often try to choose their children's friends for them. Some may even stop their children from meeting their good friends. The question of “choice” is interesting. Michael Jackson is one of the world's best singers. Michael Jackson was born in the middle west of the city of Gary, Indiana, in 1958. He began singing with his four brothers. They called the group “The Jackson Five”. The group became very popular after appearing on a television program. They started singing in 1965, and became popular soon. In 1970 the group made their first record with the name of “I Want You Back”. It was very popular. One of their hit records was “Never Say Goodbye”.
Michael was good at dancing as well as singing, for example, his dance moves and moon walking. He was asked to act in a film in 1978 for the first time, and in the same year he made a record on his own, which sold eight million copies all over the world.
Michael nearly didn't go out because he was too famous. Once his fans went off in a faint(晕倒) when they saw him at the concert. No one can do it by now. He lived in a large house and kept lots of animals. He never ate meat. He often raised money for charity. This made him win the Guinness World Records(吉尼斯世界记录) in 2006. He died on June 25th, 2009, but he would live in our heart forever.

A lesson in “heart” is my little 10-year-old daughter, Sarah, who was born with a muscle(肌肉)missing in her foot and wears a brace all the time. She came home on a beautiful spring day to tell me she had competed in “field day” 一 that's where they have lots of races and other competitive events.
Because of her leg support, my mind raced as I tried to think of words of encouragement for my Sarah, things I could say to her about not letting this get her down-things I have heard many famous coaches tell the players when they were faced with defeat(失败)—but before I could get a word out, she looked up and said, “Daddy, I won two of the races.”
I couldn't believe it! Then Sarah said. “I had an advantage.”
Ah. I knew it. I thought she must have been given a head start……some kind of physical advantage. But again, before I could say anything, she said, “Daddy, I didn't get a head start…My advantage was I had to try harder!”
We all waste food, you and me, every day, millions of tons of it. In China, enough food is wasted in restaurants every year to feed 200 million people. And the amount of food wasted by Chinese consumers is increasing fast. So our nation is being encouraged to stop wasting food.
So what should Chinese consumers do to prevent food waste?
◆Buy only what we need
We should ask for smaller potions in stores. We should also check how much food we have before buying more. We shouldn't bring much food we don't need home even if large posters ask us to do so.
◆Develop the habit of packing food
Chinese consumers are generous and friendly. In restaurants, often too much food is ordered and served. So when ordering out, we are supposed to exclude the food in the order if we don't plan to eat it. And order smaller servings in restaurants and take home what we cannot finish.
The Internet can show you lots of jobs all over the world. If you want to find a job on the Internet, use the words “job search” or “employment(职业)” to find the websites you need. Type in what and where you want to work. In a few seconds, a list of jobs will appear on the screen. You can also type in the name of a company to learn about jobs there. Many websites list full-time and summer jobs.
Job search websites can help you in other ways, too. They show you how to write a good resume(履历) and how to get ready for an interview. They also tell you what to say to an interviewer on the telephone. Some websites give you interview conversations to practise. One website even has a dictionary of interview words. A good employment website can be a big help in your job search.

The word “day” has two meanings. When we talk about the number of days in a year, we are using “day” to mean 24 hours. But when we talk about day and night, we are using “day” to mean the time between sunrise and sunset. Since the earth looks like a ball, the sun can shine on only half of it at a time. Always one half of the earth is having day and the other half night. A place is moved from day into night and from night into day over and over by the spinning(旋转) of the earth. At the equator(赤道) day and night are sometimes the same length. They are each twelve hours long. The sun rises at 6 in the morning and sets at 6 in the evening. For six months the North Pole is tilted(倾斜) toward the sun. In those months the Northern Hemisphere(半球) gets more hours of sunlight than the Southern Hemisphere. Days are longer than nights. South of the equator nights are longer than days. For the other six months the North Pole is tilted away from the sun. Then the Southern Hemisphere gets more sunlight. Days are longer than night. North of the equator nights are longer than days. Winter is the season of long nights. Summer is the season of long days.
If you often feel tired and the doctor can't find anything wrong with you, you may be in a state of subhealth(亚健康). Subhealth is a state between health and illness. Most of the subhealthy people are middle-aged ones who are usually stressed out because of work and family. And some of them are students who are having exams.
If you are subhealthy, it is not difficult for you to become well soon. You should have good living habits. For example, you should get up early and go to bed early. And you should exercise regularly. Exercising can keep you healthy. As for meals. it is better to eat less salt and sugar. Vegetables, fruit and fish are important to your body. You should eat more of them. It is not good to eat too much at one meal, because it may cause unhealthy changes in the digestive tract(消化道). And at last, a balanced diet is very helpful in staying away from subhealth.
As parents, you can help children deal with the fear of natural disasters (自然灾害) and help protect them from being hurt by telling them how disasters happen, and what to do when disasters happen. Here are some tips for you:
◆ Find out what disasters are possible in your area by visiting your local library;
◆ Think about where your family should go if your house is destroyed（毁坏）.
◆ Teach children the warning signs and signals in your area and practice what to do if a disaster happens.
◆ Once you know the danger, ask your children to help check the safety in your house. You and your children can also work together on a disaster plan and prepare a disaster box with food, water and necessary tools.
◆ If a disaster does happen, pay attention to your children's behavior. Changes in behavior, for example, acting strangely, mean that your children need help.
◆ Allow children to share their feelings about what has happened such as drawing a picture or writing a story.
◆ Let friends and neighbors help you if they can.
◆ Continue to tell your children that they are loved.
Unfortunately, three men died in a car accident. Soon they found themselves at the gate of heaven and saw God. Before getting in, God asked each of them the same question. If they could answer the question perfectly, they would be allowed to get into the heaven.
"I'm sorry for your death," said God. "But when you are in your casket(棺材)and your friends and family are standing beside you, what would you like to hear them say about you?"
Afraid of being refused, the three men were nervous. They thought for a while.
The first man said, "I would like to hear them say that I was a great doctor of my time, and a great father to my children." Hearing this, God let him in.
The second man said. "I would like to hear them say that I was a wonderful husband and school teacher who made a great difference to children." God agreed and let him in too.
Then it was the last man's turn. He looked anxious and replied, "God, I have lots of things to do for my family and the world. So I would like to hear them say, 'Look! He's moving!' "
