Would you eat an insect? It might sound disgusting, but insects have actually been part of1 diets in many parts of the world. In Thailand, fried crickets are a popular snack. In Ghana, eating termites helps people get the protein2they need. And in Mexico, ant eggs fried in butter are thought to be delicious.

Moreover, eating insects could be the3 to world hunger. Many people around the world don't have enough food to eat. Meanwhile, the earth's population keeps growing. It is said that it will reach 9, 000, 000, 000 by the year 2050. Also, we are quickly running out of new land to use for faming and raising animals. The number of fish in our oceans Is also decreasing, because of pollution and overfishing. On the other hand, there are plenty of insects available; this is why a United Nations(UN)report4 using insects as food.

Insects are not only more than enough but also good for your health. They contain lots of protein and important nutrients. Locusts, for example, actually contain more iron than beef does. Moreover, raising insects for food is better for the environment than raising other animals, because they5 less land, food and water. Also, farm animals like cows and pigs give our harmful greenhouse gases into the air after they eat. Insects release greenhouse gases too, but not as much as other animals. 6 they can breakdown the waste and dead bodies of other animals, returning their nutrients to the soil.

Insects are already being eaten by many people across the world. Even if it seems, we should keep an open mind. It could mean the difference between life and death for starving "I people around the world.

The pig war

THE MOST PERFECT WAR IN HISTORY

The year was 1859. America and England had already fought two wars. Now, they were atpeace. But one day a pig got hungry. And it nearly caused a war between the twocountries.

The pig was owned by a British man who lived on a small island. The island was just of thewestern part of North America. Both England and the US said the island was theirs. Across theisland from the British man lived some American farmers. Everyone on the island got alongpeacefully. But the peace e the day the British man's pig decided to eat some of anAmerican farmer's potatoes.

One of the American farmers shot and killed the pig. Then the pigs owner wanted $100 fromthe man who shot the animal. That was a lot of money, so the farmer refused to pay it. The Britishand Americans began to argue, and the sgot worse. The farmers asked the governor overthe island at that time for help. He sent a group of soldiers to protect the farmers. The Britishanswered by sending 2, 000 soldiers. The British were on one side of the island, and the Americanswere on the other. The problem that began with the pig was about to tinto a shooting war.

When news of the problem reached Washington and London, both leaders were s. Neither country wanted another war. They sent some men to try to fix the problem. After adiscussion, it was decided that each country would keep a small group of soldier on the island. They would stay there until the two countries could decide who owned the island. Then the otherswould have to leave.

Twelve years went by. Neither side wanted to give up the island, but they knew they had todo something. They asked the leader of Germany to help decide. After nearly a year of discussion, a dwas made. America would get the island.

Finally, the Pig War was over and only one shot was fired. That was the shot that killed thepig!

OBSOLETEJOBS

In the past, there were lots of jobs that we don't have anymore. Many of these fobs have been takenover by machines, but some have just disappeared altogether. Let me tell you about some of them.

Telegraph Operators

Long ago, people used telegraphs to send messages over long distances. It was like sending anold-fashioned text message, but you needed a telegraph operator to send it using a special machine. But now, we don't have telegraph operators anymore!

Lift Operators.

These days, when we want to go up or down in elevator, we just press a button. But a long timeago, before 1950, there were people called lift operators. They would ride in the elevator with youand operate it. Nowadays, we don't see lift operators very often, but some still work in specialplaces like the Eiffel Tower in Pairs.

Lamplighters

Back at the start of the 20th century,many cities used gas street lamps, not electric ones. Lamplighters had the job of going around in the evening and lighting these lamps with a bigcandle on a long stick. They would light about a hundred lamps in an hour. But today, we haveelectric streetlights, so lamplighters are gone.

Typesetters.

Before we had computers, people used to make books and newspapers by hand. They had toarrange metal letters in wooden frames to create the pages. It was a bit like a big puzzle!Nowadays, computers help us do this work efficiently, so typesetters are not needed anymore.

Switchboard Operators.

Believe it or not, in the past, when you wanted to make a phone call, you had to talk to an operator. You had to tell them the number you wanted to call, and they would connect your call for you. This job was mostly done by women at the beginning of the 20th century. But now, we can makephone calls without operators.

Will more jobs disappear in the future? It's very likely. The world is changing so quickly that    ▲    . That's just how the world works!
