I went shopping for a dress to wear to my daughter's high school graduation half a year ago. To my horror, I could only fit into a size 20.

Being overweight most of my adult life, I always had very little self-confidence. Wearing a dress I didn't like to such an important event was enough to make me look for help. Thankfully, a friend of mine was attending Weight Watchers meetings, and I noticed her great progress. Her successinspiredme to give it a try. I joined Weight Watchers, attended their meetings and started following their Weight-Loss System.

I focused on the plan with determination and never missed a weekly meeting! I discovered that I enjoyed the benefits of having the help and support of others. I also read the weekly online e-newsletter and was inspired by the stories, recipes and information offered there, I also read magazines produced by Weight Watchers, which have great tips and new ideas in each issue.

It's hard for me to even remember the person I was before my amazing change. I didn't walk anywhere and couldn't wash my car or walk my dog. Today I do these simple tasks without even thinking about them. But the change didn't happen overnight. I had to exercise with patience and perseverance. I decided to take it one day at a time and stick with it for good.

The "new me" is more self-confident and healthier. I love how I feel now. I have more energy and feel like I'm 25 again. So why not give Weight Watchers a try if you have the same overweight problem?

For late 19th-century North Americans and Europeans, a display of tableware (餐具)could reveal much about someone's social position, as the wealthy took great care to get different kinds of forks for everything. Before the 18th century, people of all classes usually ate with a knife and a spoon.

The fork's path to the table was hard-won and slow. In ancient Egypt, Greece, and Rome, forks were used for slicing food into pieces or lifting meat from a pot or fire.

Following a reduction in size, the fork appeared to have entered dining areas in the courts of the Middle East and Byzantine Empire by the eighth and ninth centuries, and became common among wealthy families there by the tenth century. Early in the 11th century, it appeared in various pieces of European art. In the late 11th century, St.Peter Damian from Ostia wrote about a Byzantine princess who used forks and regarded her dying of a disease as punishment for such "luxury".

The fork's slow conquest of Europe was carried out from Italy. Motivated by the same concerns for hygiene(卫生),forks were bought by wealthy Britons, inspired by Queen Victoria, who regarded fork use as a sign of good manners.

The fork's introduction to North America dates back to 1633, when John Winthrop, a founder of the Massachusetts Bay Colony, was gifted a set of forks. The Industrial Revolution strengthened the fork's presence on dining room tables as production of flatware became less expensive. Writing in 1896 inSocial Eriquere,Maud C. Cooke declared the fork had finally conquered the knife in America and "any attempt to give the knife importance at table is looked upon as an offense(冒犯)against good taste."

"There are more people actively learning a language through DuoLingo than in the entire US public school system." says Luis von Ahn, founder of the free language learning app. Since its launch (投放市场) in 2012, more than 30 million people have downloaded (下载) the app, which gamified education and attracted many language learners.

The growth of technology for educational use has changed the way in which people learn and receive education. This is particularly true for languages, an area in which the explosion of mobile apps and interactive software has provided choices to a range of people who were previously unable to receive foreign language education.

Von Ahn says that when he founded DuoLingo he decided to find a way for people to learn a language for free. Free use of languages was something he had a personal interest in addressing: he grew up in Guatemala, where he was surrounded by people all trying to learn English, half of whom were failing to do so and a lot of whom could not afford it.

One of the big changes caused by tech is the change in language learners. Languages have long been connected with the rich people, but now people from less rich backgrounds are finding affordable ways to learn.

Von Ahn says an unexpected result of DuoLingo being an app is that it's attracting an unlikely type of user. DuoLingo was designed (设计) to be like a game, and what the company has found is that many users aren't even necessarily diehard language fans, they're just looking for an educational way to kill some time.

"They're still procrastinating from something else, but at least it's somewhat useful." says Von Ahn, "The truth of the matter is that learning a language takes months or years. We have to find a way to keep them interested and that's where the gamification came in."

Four Habits to Help You Succeed

Nobody would like to experience failure. We all want to succeed. For those who have tried and failed, success seems difficult to understand.

Know your values.

Finding your values is in line with creating motivation(动力).  Pick a handful of things and write them down. Remind yourself of your values every day and reflect on whether you are honoring those values through your work.

Pick a goal and focus on it

Choose one goal to start something large enough that will give you a sense of achievement, while adjusting well to your values. If you want to achieve your goal, focus is the key here.

If you perform many tasks at a time, you might never finish your projects because they will take a long time.

Set a time for success.

Set a time for success. Know when you hope to realize your goal.  By setting a time limit, you are making the process realistic.

Failure can't be avoided when you take risks. By its very definition, the hope to succeed means you are risking failure. Many people are likely to give up far too early. Don't fall into this trap! Use failure. Treat it as a good thing, and go on.

A. Make the right decision.

B. Don't give up because of failure.

C. Sit and reflect on what you value most.

D. Push yourself to be courageous, and take the next step.

E. Keep it realistic, while not giving yourself too much time.

F I have made a list of four habits to help you set goals and realize them.

G. The more focused you are on one goal, the higher chance you have of success.

 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落的开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的

Mary waited anxiously for her turn in the empty dressing room. Never had she been so nervous before. This competition was of vital importance to her comeback. "If I can win today," she said to herself, "I can dance on the national stage next month." Three months ago, her left arm was seriously injured in a car accident. After the medical treatment, she began to recover slowly. She practiced over and over again in order to regain her dancing skills.

"Hi, Mary," in rushed her friend Jessica "How is your arm? Is it going to influence your performance?"

"I guess it can be tolerated for I am to win the match." said Mary with a determined look.

"Admirable! But I hear that a girl called Linda is really gifted and strong. She can be your real well-matched competitor. Come on!"

After Jessica left, Mary decided to practice her most difficult spin. "If I don't try harder, I won't grasp this chance." She thought. But her arm began to hurt, making her worried. "Mary, what makes you think you have a chance tonight?" she said to herself. After the pain was gone, she continued to warm up.

A slim girl hurried in and put down an equipment bag on the chair. Then, she took out her dance dress quickly and put it on skillfully. Seeing Mary, she smiled politely and said "Hi, I'm Linda. I am the next one!" Mary nodded in reply but felt uncomfortable. "This is just my competitor. Because of her, I may lose tonight." Her mind was wandering when Linda let out a scream, "Oh, God, I can't find my music tape!" Linda searched her bag but in vain. "It may be missing on the way." With these words, she then rushed out.

注意:1.续写词数应为150词左右;

2.续写部分分为两段,请在答题卡的相应位置作答。

Suddenly, Mary caught sight of a black box under the chair where Linda put her bag.

Linda finished her dancing successfully and then came Mary's turn.
