Olivia Ries was just seven years old when she and her eight-year-old brother Carter adopted a cheetah（猎豹） in South Africa.
"When my sister and I first learned back in 2009 that species like the cheetah may be extinct in the wild by the time we have kids，it scared us. We knew we had to do something to help them，"says Carter. "There are so many people （young and old alike）who just don't know what is happening to so many species，just like we didn't. Olivia and I want to make sure we reach as many people around the world as possible and help them to understand how serious the situation really is."
To do that ， the kids started One More Generation（OMG），an organization with the motto："Preserving endangered species for one more generation and beyond."
Now，many years later，Olivia and Carter have traveled all over the world spreading their message. They've been interviewed on national television，participated in marches and fundraisers and won awards for their work. In 2015，they were invited to Vietnam by the United States Embassy to participate in a programme to save rhinos. All that they've accomplished for animals and the environment is much too long to list!
"Our number one message to everyone we meet is‘Remember，anyone can make a difference...if we can，you can too'，"says Olivia."We want all people to understand that what Carter and I are doing is not necessarily something special；it is something that we all should be doing. You can start small by simply adopting an animal. Do some research on the species you are interested in，and find a good organization offering adoptions. My brother and I take our birthday money and allowance money and adopt animals all the time. "
Kids aged 6 to 13 in Cape Town，South Africa，really do dig learning at school! With the help of the Earthchild Project，which is offered in schools in two townships，students make worm（蠕虫）farms. The worms break down food waste and make the soil richer. Kids grow seedlings（幼苗）in containers and learn about the importance of good nutrition.
The school programme also offers yoga（瑜 伽）. Teachers find that the exercises help students focus better. The students enjoy Earthchild activities."The children get so excited，"says teacher Vuyelwa Rola.
"The society we are in has a lot of noise. When students are taking part in the Earthchild Project，they feel calm."
Director Janna Kretzmar came up with the idea for the project in 2005. She read about schools in India that involved kids in yoga and learning outside the classroom. She developed the Earthchild Project to offer similar activities in Cape Town schools.
"We hope the Earthchild Project can help students find solutions to all the challenges they are facing in the world today，"Kretzmar said."The best place to create change is with the youth，through education."
The Earthchild Project combines schoolwork with hiking，gardening，healthy living，and yoga."We need more than just math and science to become happy，healthy，inspired，and active citizens of our communities，"says Kretzmar.
In some communities in Cape Town，children live in poverty. They must walk long distances to get clean drinking water. Life is hard. But according to the Earthchild Project's Carly Appleby，the project works to give hope to every child. "Students who have hope，"she says，"aim for bigger goals."
Chris just found some good information on the Web for his science report about sharks. He marks a paragraph in red which explains that most sharks can't hurt people. Chris copies it and pastes it into his report before continuing his research. Uh-oh. Chris just made a big mistake. Do you know what he did? He committed plagiarism （剽窃）which is not allowed in school，college.
The word plagiarism comes from a Latin word for kidnapping（绑架）. You know that kidnapping is stealing a person. Well，plagiarism is stealing a person's ideas or writing. You wouldn't take someone's lunch money or bike，right? Well，someone's words and thoughts are personal property，too.
Chris should have given credit to the author and the website for the information. Why? Because Chris didn't know the information before he came to the website. These aren't his thoughts or ideas. He should have written down the author，the title，and the date it was published. Then he could have added it to the end of his report.
Plagiarism is a form of cheating. However，it's not always easy to tell what is plagiarism and what is not. Sometimes，it's done by accident—you really intended to do your own work，but ended up with some sentences that sound just like something you've read. If you don't tell readers where they come from，you're risking a lot of trouble. But it's sometimes done on purpose and that's just being lazy. By copying whole paragraphs from different places，a kid doesn't have to spend the time thinking about the subject，gathering his or her own thoughts about it.
So even if you put the information into your own words，you still should list the source. Ask yourself，"would I know this if I hadn't read it on that website or in that book?" If the answer is no，list the source.

3 Life Lessons I Learned From My Father
·Prepare for each moment to be a learning moment.
Growing up，Dad taught my sister and me that，to be adaptable and successful，we had to be prepared for learning moments，which might not always be comfortable. ， and there will always be surprises along the way. Dad taught me to use every experience in my life as a foundational moment—not to be stopped by adversity（逆境），to look for and learn from the lessons from any situation and build from there. . Whether inside or outside of class，I'm always looking for learning moments，and I welcome new experiences.
·Stick to your goals.
From my early teenage years，Dad encouraged me to set goals，whether it was something as simple as picking up a hobby，trying a new sport or learning a new skill. Setting measurable goals didn't have to be rigorous（严格的），. To this day，I still keep a list of goals. Although I'm not quite as organized as I would like to be——I still make it a priority（优先） to outline the steps necessary to reach my goals and watch how I'm progressing.
·Preparation is the key to lower stress.
When I showed up to college for my freshman year，I saw frantic（紧张忙乱的） students everywhere，trying to manage all of their new-found responsibility. I must have stood out，because I wasn't really sweating the small stuff. . I'm almost through my first year，and I still feel prepared，because I had all the goal-setting，money and time-management skills established before I left home. And，yes，I will admit to Dad that it's due in part to the skills I learned growing up.

Nothing has come easy for Chris who has faced many obstacles（障碍）in his childhood. His father，Nick，said that his son suffered from illnesses most of his life. Chris was born with Down's syndrome（唐氏综合征）and a heart failure and underwent many major surgeries. All through his illnesses，the little boy always had a strong will.
"When you have a child with Down's syndrome，they don't fit in，they are different and they don't get invited to parties. They don't get invited to anything. Everything you do is a challenge，it is a fight. It is a battle to just get them to be included，"his father said.
Despite his life challenges，Chris tries hard to stay positive and work hard to overcome his obstacles."Don't tell me that I'll fail，"the young man defiantly（反抗地）replies to those who tell him he can't do anything.
Chris has always been athletic，so his father found a special Olympics Marathon programme for him to participate in. His father viewed the programme as a fun thing they could do together. He encouraged Chris to do something that no one had ever done before. He knew accomplishing a challenging event such as the Ironman Triathlon would make an incredibly powerful impact，not only on his son but on many others with disabilities. He asked Chris if he would be interested in participating in the most challenging race. "Yes，let's do it!"Chris enthusiastically replied.
Individuals with Down's syndrome，like Chris，often struggle with poor balance and delayed reaction time. Therefore，it took him a little longer to complete training routines in the beginning. However，Chris is no quitter，he kept on practicing. With his courage，willpower and his family's encouragement，every day he grew better，faster and stronger.
