On the outside, 12-year-old Luna seems like your average kid. It's not until you get to know her that you learn that Luna is anything but average.

Born with a heart defect(缺陷)called dextrocardia, Luna has had three open-heart operations and continues to pursue her interests in art and fashion. But when Luna was approached by athletic shoe company Saucony to design a shoe for sale across the country, it came as quite a surprise.

"This is so incredible. I got to use my art and creativity for something new that I'd never thought I'd be able to design, "Luna said. She is one of six patients from Boston Children's Hospital(BCH) who have partnered with Saucony to design their own shoe to launch the Shoes with Soul campaign.

"Rather than just a donation, we wanted to create an experience and a moment that would not only raise money, but also awareness to high light all the amazing work that's being done at BCH, " says Chris, Saucony's vice president. "Specifically, we wanted to give some of the BCH kids an opportunity to share their story and their talents with the world. "

Luna's design is fashion. "On the tongue, they digitalized one of my drawings, and then on bottom it's a really bright pink color, and on the inside, the sole of the shoe is actually another drawing I did of a sunset, " she said. "Thinking about kids everywhere around the world wearing my shoe is amazing. It blows my mind. "

The income from the shoe sales will benefit the Boston Children's Hospital Cardiac Fitness Program, which encourages kids to "find your possible" through personalized exercise programs tailored for each individual patient's heart condition.

"It feels really good to help people and it's really something I can relate to, " says Luna. "The advice I would give a kid or someone like me is never give up. There are a lot of kids out there with your condition and you're not alone. "

There are many sources of debate on a long road trip, including route selection, the choice of snacks, and, probably most importantly, what to play on the radio. Finding a way for all parties to listen to their own audio without the need for headphones has been a goal of car makers for decades and scientists may have finally managed it.

A team from the University of Le Mans in France carefully positioned microphones, speakers and filters(过滤器)to create personalised sound zones(PSZs) inside a car, and the small regions are where sound from a set of speakers can be heard clearly. Outside these, it cannot be heard.

One barrier which scientists have previously been unable to overcome was the impact of moving one's seat. They were able to form a PS2, but unable to move it to follow a person if they moved the seat forwards or backwards.

The French team created a new algorithm(算法)specifically to tackle this issue, which handles the sound waves to create "bright" and "dark" zones in the car. "Loudspeakers are placed in the headrests. and specific filters for each transducer(换能器)are calculated to reproduce a sound signal that maintains good quality in the zone under consideration and is strongly weakened in other zones. " said. Dr Lucas Vindrola, the author of the study. "The key to the technique working properly is having sufficient microphones placed around the car to detect how many people are in the car and where they are sitting. The price to pay is to have control microphones in the passenger section, so that the algorithm can work. "

However, the technique is not yet ready to be commercially rolled out as a luxurious optional extra just yet, as it currently works only for a limited range of frequencies.

A new UK-based study on the effects of artificial light on local insect populations found that light pollution from street lamps disturbs insect behavior, leading to an overall loss of insects.

"We found that street lighting strongly reduced moth(飞蛾)population compared with unlit sites... and affected moth development, " the study stated.

The study's results apply to a localized level and cannot be used to determine whether national-level populations are declining due to light pollution. However, it adds further weight to existing research on how light pollution affects ecosystems and biodiversity hot spots and highlights the need to shift to alternatives in artificial light that would tone down these effects.

The effects on insect populations are wide-ranging. More specifically, artificial light affects how moths lay their eggs and puts them at a higher risk of being spotted by predators(捕食性动物). It also affects moths' feeding behavior, which subsequently leads to declines in their population too. Light pollution thus joins a host of factors, such as climate change and deforestation, as one of the determinants of insect population decline.

While previous studies examined the effects of lighting on bats and other vertebrates, this study focused on their prey—creatures lower down in the food chain—and, as a result, complementing(补充)previous studies.

Therefore, the study is concerning because it suggests an alarming loss of insects caused by artificial light, which will have far-reaching consequences for all the wildlife and ecosystems that depend on them.

Moreover, white light-emitting diodes(LEDs) were found to have the worst impact on local insects and ecosystem processes. The researchers thus call for shifting away from white LEDs or employing processes such as motion sensors to make the lights less bright and changing colors and filters to avoid the negative impacts. If the findings of the study are anything to go by, local insect ecosystems will suffer considerable consequences — which will, in turn, affect the wildlife that depends on them and, ultimately, could perhaps even upset agricultural balances.

Linda, a high school girl, was feeling depressed after she had failed her mid-term exams. She didn't answer her teachers' questions actively in class like she used to. Instead, she began to lower her head and got absent-minded easily. Her friends and classmates were worried about her, but she didn't feel like talking about it with them. Mrs. Green, her English teacher, noticed her changes and decided to do something before it got worse.

One day, Mrs. Green entered the classroom and asked her students to prepare for a surprise test. They waited anxiously at their desks for the test to begin. Mrs. Green handed out the question papers, with the text facing down as usual. After she handed them all out, she asked her students to turn the page and begin. To everyone's surprise, there were no questions, just a black dot in the center of the page. Mrs. Green, seeing the expression on everyone's face, told them the following: "I want you to write what you see there. "

The students, confused, got started on the task.

At the end of the class, Mrs. Green collected all the answer papers and started reading them aloud in front of all the students. Just as Mrs. Green had expected, with no exception, all of them described the black dot, trying to explain its position in the middle of the sheet, etc. Mrs. Green then picked out Linda's paper and added,

"Linda, I like your idea. Would you please follow me to the office and talk about it?"

"Er. . . Yes, madam!" Linda was puzzled because she thought her idea was no better than anyone else's. Like others, she also described the black dot only and ignored the white part of the paper.

注意1. 所续写短文的词数应为150左右;2. 每段的开头语已为你写好。

Feeling nervous, Linda went into Mrs. Green's office.

"Mrs. Green is right. I should focus more on the white part of the paper!"Linda got refreshed.
