The South Bronx is one of the poorest and most polluted places in America, with smog-choked freeways and smelly wastewater treatment plants.

"We're a dumping ground, " Omar explains. "All the garbage from the rest of New York City ends up here. "

But Omar started looking at garbage in a different way. "A lot of what people throw away is perfectly good, " he says. "Just look at that stuff from construction sites — doors, sinks, toilets. People will buy those things. It's only called garbage because somebody threw it away. " Omar was just out of college and working for an environmental group called Sustainable South Bronx when he started considering how to get this "good garbage" to people who could use it. Instead of destroying old things, why not clean them up and resell them? Why not hire people in the community to do the work? Better yet, why not make this business a "cooperative, " which means the people working in the business own it and share the profits?

Out of this, Omar started the first cooperative in the country dedicated to reusing construction waste. To start his business, Omar put up flyers along the truck-jammed, trash-filled neighborhood streets, looking for people to work with him. He soon found four other dedicated workers. They rented a warehouse and started looking for donations of used materials.

In April 2008, Omar's cooperative, ReBuilders Source, opened its business and began selling construction supplies — at reasonable prices — to neighborhood builders and home owners. With the help of city officials, he also began planning a new training program to help local residents learn the skills to get good jobs that help the environment and even start their own cooperatives. Workers were trained to carefully take buildings apart so that things like doors and windows can be reused instead of being smashed and sent off to a landfill. Deconstructing buildings this way could be a huge industry with many good jobs for people who need them.

"If you have a use for something, " Omar says, "it's no longer waste. "

    1. (1) Why is the South Bronx mentioned in the first paragraph?
A . To arouse readers' interest. B . To serve as the background information. C . To contrast with the other districts. D . To introduce a famous place.
    2. (2) Which was Not the reason for Omar's creating a cooperative business?
A . To provide jobs for local people. B . To deal with dumped rubbish. C . To increase cooperation among neighbors. D . To make money from garbage.
    3. (3) Which of the following words best describe Omar?
      A . Idealistic and business-minded. B . Creative and action-oriented. C . Practical and self-focused. D . Devoted and iron-hearted.
    4. (4) Which saying might interpret Omar's action?
A . Knowledge starts with practice. B . One good turn deserves another. C . Four eyes see more than two. D . Kill two birds with one stone.

After COVID-19, the Bureau of Labor Statistics predicts that while the number of nurses has increased in the past three years, the U. S. still experiences a shortage of registered nurses, and that there will be over one million unfilled nursing jobs. So what's the solution? Robots.

Japan is ahead of the curve when it comes to this trend. Toyohashi University of Technology has developed Terapio, a robotic medical cart that can make hospital rounds, deliver medications and other items, and retrieve records. This type of robot will likely be one of the first to be implemented in hospital.

Robots capable of social engagement help with loneliness as well as cognitive functioning, but the robot itself doesn't have to engage directly — it can serve as a mediator for human communication. Telepresence robots such as MantaroBot, Vgo, and Giraff can be controlled through a computer, smartphone, or tablet, allowing family members or doctors to remotely monitor patients or Skype them. If you can't get to the nursing home to visit grandma, you can use a telepresence robot to hang out with her.

A robot's appearance affects its ability to successfully interact with humans, which is why the Human-Interactive Robot Research decided to develop a robotic nurse that looks like a huge teddy bear. RIBA, also known as "Robear, " can help patients into and out of wheelchairs and beds with its strong arms.

On the less cute and more scary side there is Actroid F, which has such resilient skin and natural hair color that some patients may not know the difference. This conversational robot companion has cameras in its eyes, which allow it to track patients and use appropriate facial expressions and body language in its interactions.

It's important to note that robotic nurses don't decide courses of treatment or make diagnoses. Instead, they perform routine and laborious tasks, freeing nurses up to attend to patients with immediate needs. This is one industry where it seems the integration of robots will lead to cooperation, not replacement.

    1. (1) What does the underlined part in paragraph 2 mean?
      A . Take the lead. B . Reach the standard. C . Set a record. D . Miss a turn.
    2. (2) Telepresence robots may serve their right purposes in hospital when ____.
A . they collect medical records for patients B . they deliver food to clinical doctors C . they move the mobility-disabled patients D . they assist doctors with long-distance diagnoses
    3. (3) What is the distinctive attraction of Actroid F?
      A . Its scary arm strength. B . Its adorable appearance. C . Its human-like voice. D . Its proper interactive response.
    4. (4) What is the suitable title for the passage?
      A . Robots — the future replacement of nurses B . Robots — the earth-shaking reform in hospitals C . Robots — a good supplement to nurses D . Robots — a new way to treat patients

While teenagers who are at risk of depression with risky behaviors — drinking alcohol, smoking cigarettes and cutting classes often alert parents and teachers that serious problems are brewing, a new study finds that there's another group of adolescents who are in nearly as much danger of experiencing the same mental symptoms.

These teens use tons of media, get insufficient sleep and have a sedentary (不爱活动的) lifestyle. Of course, that may sound like a description of every teenager on the planet. But the study wars that it is teenagers who engage in all three of these practices in the extreme that are truly in a dangerous position. Because their behaviors are not usually seen as a red flag, these young people have been called the "invisible risk" group by the study's authors.

The study's authors surveyed 15, 395 students and analyzed nine risk behaviors, including excessive alcohol use, illegal drug use, heavy smoking and high media use. Their aim was to determine the relationship between these risk behaviors and mental health issues in teenagers. The group that scored high on all nine of the risk behaviors was most likely to show symptoms of depression; in all, nearly 15% of this group reported being depressed, compared with just 4% of the low-risk group. But the invisible group wasn't far behind the high-risk set, with more than 13% of them exhibiting depression.

The findings caught Carli off guard. "We didn't expect that, " he says. "The high-risk group and low-risk group are obvious, but this third group was not only unexpected. It was so distinct and so larger — nearly one third of our sample — that it became a key finding of the study. "

Carli says that one of the most significant things about his study is that it provides new early warning signs for parents, teachers and mental health-care providers. And early identifications, support and treatment for mental health issues, he says, are the best ways to keep them from turning into full-blown disorders.

    1. (1) Which teenager probably belongs to the "invisible group"?
      A . A teenager who drinks frequently. B . A teenager who exercises regularly. C . A teenager who skips school. D . A teenager who suffers from a lack of sleep.
    2. (2) What can we know about the new study?
A . It was conducted by analyzing and comparing the previous data. B . It was intended to dig into the reasons for depression. C . It revealed an alarming rate of the invisible group suffering depression. D . Its findings were under expectation of the research team.
    3. (3) What is Carli's attitude toward the findings?
      A . Unclear. B . Positive. C . Doubtful. D . Indifferent.
    4. (4) The author wrote this passage to ____.
A . introduce a new therapy for teens' mental disorder B . war about the unobserved signals for teens' mental problems C . share a novel psychological experiment with teens D . caution teens against developing unhealthy habits

Adaptations are currently popular in the movie industry. We're all familiar with film adaptations of books. Book adaptations of films aren't that common, but it's a medium that certainly takes skills to master.

The most well-known version of a film being adapted to books is via the novelisation (小说化). Movie novelisations went through a boom period before the internet era. Fans wanted to know more about the fictional worlds and experience the story again in a new way.  Thus, the novelisation was a great solution.

Meanwhile, the screen to page process has also opened up the possibility of sequels (续篇). Perhaps there simply wasn't financial investment to create a follow-up to a film. Maybe a sequel idea simply felt more appropriate for a novel. In recent years for example, the film Heat, released in 1995 has received its own novel. ET: The Book of the Green Planet continued the extra-terrestrial's journey after the completion of the film's narrative.

But what are the benefits of reading a novel instead of waiting for the big screen version? Well, a novel can take its reader deeper into the mind of the characters that the film had to represent in a more visual way. Although a film might characterize a fantastic scene or a specific costume choice, it doesn't always tell why those things are important. Novelisations and sequels can take that extra step and shine a light on some of those movie-making choices.

Book adaptations of films obviously won't ever replace cinema, and there's no need to choose one or the other.

    A. But what about book adaptations of films?

    B. Besides, descriptions can be more detailed too.

    C. For a time, they were everything for cinema lovers.

    D. Films being adapted to books has been talked repeatedly.

    E. But they couldn't simply google it, or immediately purchase the production on tape.

    F. Regardless, some terrific films have been expanded upon thanks to this medium.

    G. Actually, these two mediums are considerably interdependent and complementary.

  • 19.  第二节阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

I knew I would have a beyond-busy summer, I would be a junior teacher for the Little Dragons Karate(空手道) Camp. And I had to do summer swim team. And Ollie and I already had two customers for our dog-walking business,

"You might be biting off more than you can chew, " my mom said with a warning glimpse when I talked to her about it and announced, "I want to do everything!"

    "Don't worry. " I grinned, "I have strong teeth!"

My mom smiled back. "In this case, it's your organizational skills, not your teeth, that need to be strong. " I didn't take it to my heart.

And the first week really was no problem. My friend Ollie was out of town and karate camp hadn't started, so my swim stuff was all I needed to worry about. The next week was great too. I swam, and a Little Dragon at karate camp told me I was his favorite teacher ever!

I did learn, though, that staying organized with two activities was harder. My backpack was already stuffed with a towel and swim things, so I needed another for my karate clothing. Riding my bike from karate camp to the pool with two backpacks was a challenge. But I still had it under control until Ollie got back.

"We're late getting our business together!" he said. "We'll have to spend every spare minute preparing. "

"But I don't have any spare minutes!" I said

"Did you forget we agreed to walk Alfie every Saturday? And Muffin on Tuesdays at 4:00?"Ollie asked. I couldn't let Ollie down, so I took out a third backpack and filled it with dog toys, treats, and plastic bags. I thought I was all set.

But I was wrong! It didn't take long for my dog-walking stuff and karate stuff and swim stuff to get all mixed up, forgotten, or lost. One day, I forgot my karate backpack and had to borrow Emma's extra outfit, which was too tight. The next day, I remembered my karate stuff but forgot my swimsuit, so I had to help out in the snack shop and stay out of the pool all afternoon. And another time, when I reached into my dog-walking pack for plastic bags, all I could find were swim goggles(护目镜) and sunscreen.

    注意: 1. 续写词数应为150左右;2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。

Paragraph 1:Worse still, I had to keep track of all the special times.

Paragraph 2:Luckily, I, with my parents, came up with a solution to get organized.
