After nearly a decade of enduring the busy and noisy life in Las Vegas, Nevada, my family and I reached a decision to have a slower pace and adopt a more environmentally-friendly lifestyle. We collectively agreed that moving to the countryside would be the perfect solution.

After some searching, we found a home in Yucca, Arizona, a small town with a population of less than 1,000 people. However, when I called to ask about the condition of the house, I was surprised to know that there was no electricity available in the area. Initially, I almost denied the idea of living here, but then I realized that it was an excellent opportunity to go green. After careful consideration, we decided to make an offer and moved in on Thanksgiving Day.

In the beginning, we faced challenges as we remodeled(改造)the house and lived in our motor home. However, these frustrations just made us work harder. We gradually fixed the things and after 38 days, we were able to move into the house.

Living off the grid(电线)has been a significant adjustment for us over the past four months, but it has also brought numerous benefits. One of the most educational lessons we have learned is teaching my kids the importance of conservation. They used to take water, power, and gas for granted, but now they understand the need to be mindful of their usage. We have made changes such as taking shorter showers, doing full loads of laundry, and turning off the water while brushing our teeth. Additionally, we have embraced other sustainable practices like recycling, growing our own organic vegetables, and re-purposing items instead of throwing them away.

Overall, our decision to go off the grid has been incredibly positive for our family. We hope that even after our children move out, they will continue to keep the habits they have developed while living off the grid.

    1. (1) Why did the author and their family decide to move to the countryside?
A . They wanted to experience a busy and chaotic lifestyle. B . They wanted to lead a green life. C . They wanted to live a life without electricity. D . They wanted to save money on housing.
    2. (2) What was the first reaction of the author when she learned that the house was no- electricity?
A . She had meant to reject the idea. B . She was excited about the opportunity to go green. C . She was unsure about whether to move or not. D . She was disappointed and continued searching for other options.
    3. (3) What is one of the valuable lessons the family has learned from living off the grid?
A . Repair the house before it rains. B . Have a new lifestyle is a trend. C . The joy of growing their own vegetables. D . It is significant to save resources.
    4. (4) Which of the following is the best title of the passage?
A . Urban Family's experience of living in the countryside. B . The trend — leading an environmentally-friendly lifestyle. C . How to adapt to a new environment. D . Urban Family's transformative journey to a green life.

Taking good care of your teeth may be linked to better brain health, according to a study published in the July 5, 2023, online issue of Neurology. "Our study found that gum(牙龈)disease and tooth loss were linked to brain shrinkage(萎缩)in the hippocampus(海马体), which plays a role in memory and Alzheimer's disease(阿尔兹海默病)," said study author Satoshi Yamaguchi, Ph.D. of Tohoku University in Sendai, Japan.

The study involved 172 people without memory problems. Their average age was 67. Participants had dental exams and took memory tests at the beginning of the study. They also had brain scans to measure the volume of their hippocampus at the beginning of the study.  This was measured again four years later. For each participant, researchers counted the number of teeth and checked for amount of gum disease.

Researchers found that the number of teeth and amount of gum disease was linked to changes in the left hippocampus of the brain. For people with mild gum disease, having fewer teeth was associated with a faster rate of brain shrinkage, which is the same for people with severe gum disease having more teeth. After adjusting for age, researchers found that for people with mild gum disease, the increase in the rate of brain shrinkage due to one less tooth was equal to nearly one year of brain aging. By contrast, for people with severe gum disease the increase in brain shrinkage due to one more tooth was equal to 1.3 years of brain aging.

"These results highlight the importance of preserving the health of the teeth and not just maintaining the teeth," Yamaguchi said. "The findings suggest that controlling the progression of gum disease through regular dental visits is crucial, and that teeth with severe gum disease may need to be removed and replaced with appropriate false ones."

Yamaguchi said future studies are needed with larger groups of people. The limitation of the study is that it was conducted in one region of Japan, so the results may not be applied to other locations.

    1. (1) What is Yamaguchi's study mainly about?
A . Causes of gum disease. B . The symptoms of brain shrinkage. C . Ways to take good care of one's teeth. D . The connection between the teeth and the brain.
    2. (2) How did researchers reach the conclusion?
A . By making comparisons. B . By referring to previous studies. C . By conducting a survey among dentists. D . By proving experts' theory in experiments.
    3. (3) What do the research findings indicate?
A . Gum disease is increasing among people. B . Keeping teeth healthy is of great importance. C . Removing natural teeth is bad for dental health. D . Doing a routine dental checkup can avoid gum disease.
    4. (4) What is expected of the future studies according to Yamaguchi?
A . Exploring treatments for gum disease. B . Seeking new methods to improve brain health. C . Involving people from other places in the research. D . Applying the research to relieve Alzheimer's disease.

How to Make Friends at Community College

Making friends at a community college can be a bit more challenging compared to four-year schools. Since students usually don't live on campus, there isn't always a shared living environment. Here are some ways to make friends at a community college.

⒈Get involved on campus: Look for opportunities to get involved on campus, such as joining clubs, organizations, or student government. These activities provide a chance to meet and interact with other students who share similar interests or hobbies.

: In many courses, group projects are a common part of the curriculum. Use these assignments as an opportunity to collaborate with classmates and build relationships. By working closely with others, you can get to know them better and potentially form lasting friendships.

⒊Be friendly and approachable: . Be open to striking up conversations with your classmates, whether it's before or after class. Show genuine interest in getting to know them and be willing to listen.

⒋Work out with a partner: College work will occupy most of your day. Your health, for one, is something you may start to neglect as you throw yourself fully into college life. Needless to say, ignoring your health is absolutely unacceptable. . You can start with your pal by heading over to your school's gym or fitness center and try meeting new people there.

    A. Take advantage of group projects

    B. Know your group member better

    C. By participating in campus activities, you can expand your social circle and make new friends.

    D. A simple smile or greeting goes a long way in creating a friendly atmosphere.

    E. Community colleges offer programs that are two years long

    F. However, that doesn't mean opportunities aren't available

    G. Finding yourself an exercise friend will help encourage you to become more active

With a wide smile on her face, 15-year-old Sirin eagerly ran to her mother to proudly show off her new painting. mother raised in surprise and spoke impatiently, "Not now, baby. I'm busy with an important conversation. Just wait for a while, okay?"

Holding her oil painting, Sirin frowned (皱眉), and then searched for her dad."Dad, see what I have done," Sirin exclaimed cheerfully. Her dad turned around while adjusting his tie, grinned at her, and made a thumbs-up sign!

Immediately, Sirin replied angrily, "Dad, you haven't seen it yet."

He smiled at her, saying, "No time, baby. I will see it later." He just patted her back lovingly, kissed her forehead, and rushed for his office.

She was hard to please with a simple gesture or smile. She stood there for a few seconds, and then stormed into her own bedroom. Hot air was blowing from her nostrils(鼻孔). Her face turned red. She threw the painting on the table, slammed(砰地关上)the door and threw herself on her bed.

"Why is everybody so busy?" She recalled thousands of incidents that hurt her in preschool, middle school and even high school too! She assumed at least her own family members would give some feedback on her thoughts, but they were no exception. Unconsciously(无意识地), her eyes were filled with tears.

The knocking sound on the door put a sudden brake on her thought. Her mom was calling her for dinner. Sirin intentionally came late to join them. She kept silent and didn't look at anyone, scratching(刮擦) at the table mat with her nail. Her mom was puzzled at her unusual behavior. Suddenly, the morning incident came to mind. Softly, she asked, "Honey, did I do anything wrong?"

At this very moment, Sirin could no longer contain her anger.

    ……

When back from school the next day, Sirin was surprised to see her painting on the wall.
