After nearly a decade of enduring the busy and noisy life in Las Vegas, Nevada, my family and I reached a decision to have a slower pace and adopt a more environmentally-friendly lifestyle. We collectively agreed that moving to the countryside would be the perfect solution.
After some searching, we found a home in Yucca, Arizona, a small town with a population of less than 1,000 people. However, when I called to ask about the condition of the house, I was surprised to know that there was no electricity available in the area. Initially, I almost denied the idea of living here, but then I realized that it was an excellent opportunity to go green. After careful consideration, we decided to make an offer and moved in on Thanksgiving Day.
In the beginning, we faced challenges as we remodeled(改造)the house and lived in our motor home. However, these frustrations just made us work harder. We gradually fixed the things and after 38 days, we were able to move into the house.
Living off the grid(电线)has been a significant adjustment for us over the past four months, but it has also brought numerous benefits. One of the most educational lessons we have learned is teaching my kids the importance of conservation. They used to take water, power, and gas for granted, but now they understand the need to be mindful of their usage. We have made changes such as taking shorter showers, doing full loads of laundry, and turning off the water while brushing our teeth. Additionally, we have embraced other sustainable practices like recycling, growing our own organic vegetables, and re-purposing items instead of throwing them away.
Overall, our decision to go off the grid has been incredibly positive for our family. We hope that even after our children move out, they will continue to keep the habits they have developed while living off the grid.
On the important occasion of the 20th anniversary of China's first manned spaceflight the Shenzhou-5, the spacecraft soared into the sky from the Jiuquan Satellite Launch Center in Northwest China on Thursday morning at 11:14 am.
Sitting atop the Long March-2F Y17 carrier rocket, the spacecraft, carrying taikonauts Tang Hongbo, Tang Shengjie, and Jiang Xinlin, set off on the journey toward the China Space Station. Following a smooth flight of around 10 minutes, the Shenzhou-17 spacecraft entered its planned orbit, marking a successful launch, according to the official release by the China Manned Space Agency (CMSA).
Shenzhou-17 is a manned spacecraft with long-term space residency(驻留)capability. The spacecraft adopts the latest aerospace technology and has high autonomy and precise navigation capabilities, providing strong support for the development of China's aerospace industry.
The main aim of the mission is to rotate(轮换)the crew in orbit with the Shenzhou-16 , and then continue with a stay in space for about six months until April 2024. Also the astronauts will conduct a variety of scientific experiments and technological verification (技术验证) in space, including life sciences, physics, materials science, and other fields. These experiments will provide important scientific data and technological experience for human exploration of space. A significant highlight of the Shenzhou-17 mission, as revealed by the spokesperson, is the pioneering experimental extravehicular (舱外的)repair operations to be undertaken on the space station. The increasing presence of space debris (碎片)has led to long-term operational spacecraft enduring unavoidable impacts from tiny space particles.
Taking good care of your teeth may be linked to better brain health, according to a study published in the July 5, 2023, online issue of Neurology. "Our study found that gum(牙龈)disease and tooth loss were linked to brain shrinkage(萎缩)in the hippocampus(海马体), which plays a role in memory and Alzheimer's disease(阿尔兹海默病)," said study author Satoshi Yamaguchi, Ph.D. of Tohoku University in Sendai, Japan.
The study involved 172 people without memory problems. Their average age was 67. Participants had dental exams and took memory tests at the beginning of the study. They also had brain scans to measure the volume of their hippocampus at the beginning of the study. This was measured again four years later. For each participant, researchers counted the number of teeth and checked for amount of gum disease.
Researchers found that the number of teeth and amount of gum disease was linked to changes in the left hippocampus of the brain. For people with mild gum disease, having fewer teeth was associated with a faster rate of brain shrinkage, which is the same for people with severe gum disease having more teeth. After adjusting for age, researchers found that for people with mild gum disease, the increase in the rate of brain shrinkage due to one less tooth was equal to nearly one year of brain aging. By contrast, for people with severe gum disease the increase in brain shrinkage due to one more tooth was equal to 1.3 years of brain aging.
"These results highlight the importance of preserving the health of the teeth and not just maintaining the teeth," Yamaguchi said. "The findings suggest that controlling the progression of gum disease through regular dental visits is crucial, and that teeth with severe gum disease may need to be removed and replaced with appropriate false ones."
Yamaguchi said future studies are needed with larger groups of people. The limitation of the study is that it was conducted in one region of Japan, so the results may not be applied to other locations.
How to Make Friends at Community College

With a wide smile on her face, 15-year-old Sirin eagerly ran to her mother to proudly show off her new painting. mother raised in surprise and spoke impatiently, "Not now, baby. I'm busy with an important conversation. Just wait for a while, okay?"
Holding her oil painting, Sirin frowned (皱眉), and then searched for her dad."Dad, see what I have done," Sirin exclaimed cheerfully. Her dad turned around while adjusting his tie, grinned at her, and made a thumbs-up sign!
Immediately, Sirin replied angrily, "Dad, you haven't seen it yet."
He smiled at her, saying, "No time, baby. I will see it later." He just patted her back lovingly, kissed her forehead, and rushed for his office.
She was hard to please with a simple gesture or smile. She stood there for a few seconds, and then stormed into her own bedroom. Hot air was blowing from her nostrils(鼻孔). Her face turned red. She threw the painting on the table, slammed(砰地关上)the door and threw herself on her bed.
"Why is everybody so busy?" She recalled thousands of incidents that hurt her in preschool, middle school and even high school too! She assumed at least her own family members would give some feedback on her thoughts, but they were no exception. Unconsciously(无意识地), her eyes were filled with tears.
The knocking sound on the door put a sudden brake on her thought. Her mom was calling her for dinner. Sirin intentionally came late to join them. She kept silent and didn't look at anyone, scratching(刮擦) at the table mat with her nail. Her mom was puzzled at her unusual behavior. Suddenly, the morning incident came to mind. Softly, she asked, "Honey, did I do anything wrong?"
At this very moment, Sirin could no longer contain her anger.
……
When back from school the next day, Sirin was surprised to see her painting on the wall.
