Frequently Asked Questions for Yellowstone National Park
How much is the entrance fee?
$35 - Private, non-commercial vehicle; $30- Motorcycle or snowmobile (winter) 520- Visitors 16 and older entering by foot, bike, ski, etc. * This fee provides the visitor with a 7-day entrance permit for both Yellowstone and Grand Teton National Parks. |
Where should we stay?
Your decision may depend on how much time you have and what you want to see the most. If you plan on visiting Yellowstone National Park for only a few days and want to experience some of the main attractions then West Yellowstone would be a good base. From there, it is a short drive to the geyser basins, old Faithful and the Grand Canyon. If you want to have the full park experience, then perhaps lodging at 0ld Faithful would be a good choice. If you want to view the most wildlife then we suggest the Northeast Entrance. The South Entrance is a great option if you have more time and want to visit Grand Teton National Park; however it is a longer drive to the heart of Yellowstone if you base out of Jackson. The North Entrance is park headquarters and has the most historic information on the park. |
When is the best time to visit the park? .
This depends on what your interests are. Spring has abundant wildlife, roaring waterfalls and wild weather. Summer has it all including the most crowds, so you'd better get out early and cat your breakfast on the road! Fall is a special time of year. Everything seems to be diminishing including the crowds.Winter is a time of being a bit of social isolation. In years past it was more "economical" to visit most of the park. Now it is more restricted unless you can afford a snow-coach or guided snowmobile tour. |
Can I get Cell and Wi-Fi?
Free public Wi-Fi is available at Al-bright Visitor Center and at some park lodges for registered guests. Cell service is extremely limited, with reception only available in or near major developed areas. In summer, service is often maxed out in these areas. Yet, it is sad to see the latest generation fade away from normal everyday activities and conversation. Get out, look around, admire the wonders. There' re plenty of natural and human distractions around every corner. The last thing we want to do is divert visitors from Yellowstone's wonders especially while driving. |
About 15 years ago, Andrew McLindon, a business owner, was riding his bike in Austin, Texas, when he thought about a friend's 12-year-old son. The boy had never known the joy of biking because he suffered from a brain condition that often caused balance disturbances.
When he got home, McLindon, now 60, went online and found a three-wheel recumbent( 侧卧的)bike with a seat belt, perfect for a child with balance issues. Soon the boy was cycling around the street with his peers, having fun and getting exercise. But there was more, as McLindon learned from his friend's reaction. "To see his son interacting with other kids," McLindon says. "I'll never forget the smile on his face."
That smile launched the McLindon Family Foundation. Funded by donations, the group works with pediatric rehab(小儿康复)clinics to find children who can benefit from owning bike and to help craft each bike to the particular needs of the child. A bike may include a headrest, a shoulder band, a seat belt, and a caregiver's steering and braking system in the back. The bikes are expensive一$3, 000 to $4, 000, and that's with the foundation's large discount. For kids lucky enough to get one, they 're a life changer.
"We worked with a 14-year-old who had a back problem," says McLindon. She spent most days on the couch watching TV. Soon after she got her bike, she was training for special-needs triathlons(铁人三项). In a magazine interview, she said,"I always knew there was an athlete me.
So far, the foundation has given away 450 bikes, and that's just a start."I do a lot of things. I run a lot of companies." McLindon says."But getting these kids their bikes is the most important thing that I do."
It's unlikely that we'll see a dodo, a flightless bird, walking this earth anytime again, according to Beth Shapiro, an evolutionary molecular biologist.
"When most people think about de-extinction, they re imagining cloning," Shapiro said. Cloning, the approach that created Dolly, the sheep in 1996 and Elizabeth Ann, the black-footed ferret in 2020, creates an identical genetic copy of an individual by putting DNA from a living adult cell into an egg cell from which the nucleus (细胞核) has been removed. Adult cells contain all the DNA needed to develop into a living animal. Egg cells then use that DNA as a blueprint to turn themselves into many kinds of cells-- skin, organs, blood and bones--一the animal needs.
"But no living cells from dodos exist. Instead," Shapiro said, "you'd have to start with a closely related animal's genome (基因组) and then change it into one similar to dodos." For example, mammoths (猛犸) are also extinct, but they were very closely related to modern Asian elephants, So researchers are attempting to bring mammoths back from extinction by creating a hybrid mammoth with some mammoth genes replacing part of the elephant genome in an elephant egg cell. However, there are likely millions of genetic differences between the genome of an Asian elephant and that of a mammoth according to Shapiro.
As for the dodo, its closest living relative is the Nicobar pigeon. Mammoths and Asian elephants are
pretty closely related, whereas it had been more than 20 million years since the dodo and the Nicobar pigeon had any common ancestors. Genetic differences between the two bird species are therefore much greater, making it a formidable task to create a successful hybrid in the lab, Shapiro said.
Even if scientists manage to bring dodos back, the island where they once lived is a very different place nowadays, which make it impossible to reintroduce dodos without major intervention.
Recycling is a great way of doing your bit for the environment and helping to protect the earth's precious resources. However, a new study has revealed that our desire to be sustainable maybe doing more harm than good. According to waste company Biffa, this is because of"wish-cycling"一assuming that items such as disposable coffee cups and pizza boxes will be recycled if put in the recycling bin. In fact, pollution from those items or other non-recyclables can result in recyclable items that have been put in the correct bin going to landfill. David Heaton, a business director at Biffa, said:"Pollution happens when items are disposed of in the wrong bins or haven't been cleaned before being recycled."
Experts at Biffa analyzed the amounts of non-target and non-recyclable materials that entered UK material recycling facilities between 2016 and 2020. It was found that, in 2016, the average pollution rate of recycling waste was 13.4 percent, rising over four years to 17 percent by the end of 2020. This shows that, even as people are becoming more eco-conscious, wish-cycling is increasing both in households and businesses.
The Biffa experts say that one of the best ways to prevent pollution of recycling is to clean recyclable waste before putting it in the bin. They suggest cutting off the top of old pizza boxes and only recycling that part to avoid pollution from the grease (油脂). Check the on-packaging recycling label to check it can actually be recycled. When it comes to plastics, Biffa recommends checking the resin code, the number in the plastic triangle, to know whether it should go in the recycling bin. In general, resin codes 1, 2, 4 and 5 are recyclable, while 3, 6 and 7 are not. Larger items, like electronics, furniture and batteries, can also be recycled but often can not go in household recycling bins as they need specialist separating. These will need to be taken to recycling centers or sustainable waste management companies.
"It's vital as a nation that we get better at effective 'pre-cycling'- sorting waste correctly before collection to reduce pollution rates," added Mr. Heaton.
Work from Anywhere Movement
For a lot of us, working from wherever we wanted was a bit of a dream. It would mean we'd be able to visit family and not take holiday days. But suddenly that "dream"of not working in the office became a reality for many. Working from home over the last years has proven that it isn't always necessary for teams to physically be together and there is more flexibility.
An obvious benefit for many employers is reduced costs. With a widespread workforce, there's no need to have an office big enough for everyone. They also save on travel costs, as meetings that once"needed" to be done face-to-face can now be done online. With the work from anywhere movement, employers can hire global talents. They're not restricted to people living nearby.
In an ever changing and developing working world, offering benefits like this could be
what makes a company stand out from another for a specific candidate.
For many employees, working from anywhere supports mental health. Imagine ending a particularly stressful meeting. Rather than going back to your office desk, you step out your door and have a coffee in the sun or walk along a beach. In Addition, working from anywhere allows you to have a better work-life balance. It lets you travel to see family, watch your daughter's soccer game, and go to the little bakery-- all while being paid.
A. But it's not only about money.
B. However, every coin has two sides.
C. It decreases stress and other concerns.
D. Your time is spent on the things that matter.
E. There are a lot of benefits for companies and workers.
F. Offering remote job positions makes a company more competitive.
G. Offices are increasingly where you go to put the company into company.
It began when I was a child. The doctor told my parents stuttering (口吃)is 21 and that it happens mainly to kids. But I felt 22 and spoke as little as possible.
The situation 23 when I was in middle school. It was in a physics class when the teacher's discussion of gravity 24 me. I was eager to learn more about that. In this way, interacting with teachers and classmates was 25 . Much to my surprise, I found that my 26 for knowledge was stronger than my fear of 27 . I decided to follow my dream of being a scientist.
Later, I faced my biggest challenge. I had to give a 28 . I had learned my speech by heart, and prepared the answers to 29 audience questions. The day before the talk, I felt 30 . But when it was my turn, I was wild with fear of getting 31 . However, seeing the look of encouragement of my teacher, I managed to calm down.I 32 the content rather than the fluency. I ended up stuttering sometimes, but each time I let it go and kept moving forward. I 33 myself on getting over this difficulty.
Growth comes through continuous struggles. Now, I no longer 34 public speaking at any time.Instead, I 35 seek opportunities to be on the stage.
A river habitat refers to environment in which living organisms can survive in and around a river. It is important to keep in mind when considering habitats and ecosystems .everything is connected. A river habitat can be viewedone large habitat, or as a series of (small) habitats, each of which relies on the other to function (proper). As a result, (change) to the river bank or the plants along the sides of the river contribute to erosion (侵蚀).
In order for any river habitat to be successful, mixing plant with wildlife species (be) generally required. This is because it is necessary for food chains, also known as trophic levels, (exist) in ecosystems. The types of plant and wildlife species that will be found in a river habitat vary greatly (depend) on the region of the world where the river (locate).
Fish, plankton, and insects are some of the most common; mammals such as beavers may also build habitats along a river. Other wildlife, such as deer, may also use the river as a source of clean drinking water.
Rick, a ten-year- old boy, was constantly angry at everything around him. He always fought in school with the other kids. Once he had an outburst in school. Upset by something a classmate said to him,he pushed the boy, and a fight happened. When the teacher stepped in to break it up, Rick went crazy, throwing papers and books around the classroom and rushing out. His teachers couldn't say anything that would comfort the kid. And the parents of his schoolmates were getting concerned. Rick was earning quite the reputation. After talking with school officials, Rick's mom tried everything she could to calm Rick down.
She tried different methods until one day she came home with a canvas(画布)and paint."What's this?", Rick asked. Rick's mom handed over the painting equipment and said,"Whenever you feel angry, paint whatever you're angry about instead of bursting out." Rick wasn't that happy about it but he gave it a try anyway. Over the next few weeks, the young boy created several artworks. They mostly showed disturbing images though. So his mom took all of the paintings and called Rick over so that they could talk about them. "Tell me, Rick. What are these paintings about?"
"Well, the first painting is about how some of the kids show off their new clothes and pencil cases. The next painting is about my teacher who keeps telling me about how I'm doing things wrong And the last painting is about how one of my schoolmate's father suggested that I change my attitude. All of them make me so angry." Rick's mom, in a calm voice, took Rick by her side and told him:"Don't you see it,Rick?""See what?" Rick asked. "You're so angry at all of these things but not once did you try to understand why you're getting so angry. What have all these people done to you, really?"
