一、阅读理解(共15小题;每小题2分,满分30分)
  • 1.  阅读理解

21yearold Jasmine Harrison completed the 2020 Talisker Whisky Atlantic Challenge in 70 days, 3 hours and 48 minutes—a new world record for the youngest female to row alone across the Atlantic.

Harrison, who's from North Yorkshire, England, didn't have loads of experience in rowing long distances. In her childhood, she could not even dream of such an ambition. She'd only got the idea three years earlier when she happened to be in Antigua, teaching swimming, and saw the end of the 2017 Talisker Whisky Atlantic Challenge. "Talking to a family member of a young man that had just completed it, I got to know just how amazing a thing it was. I didn't say ‘not a chance I would do that,' but it was more a fact of why not do it?" she said.

Every day, Harrison would row for about 12 hours, pushing her 550pound boat she bought with some money across the ocean, covering roughly 90 kilometers. The journey left her with much time all by herself, which she said she enjoyed. But things got a little harder after her speaker fell in the water and she could no longer listen to her music.

She had other company along the way. She saw lots of sea life, including several whales. One even rose out of the ocean right next to her boat. "I'm in their environment," she said. "It's just amazing. "

Twice, her boat was turned over in the night by large waves. The second time, she hurt her arm quite badly. Another time, she nearly ran into a ship. When her food ran out, she lived on cookies and chocolate. In the face of great hardship and loneliness, she kept going.

On February 20, 2021, she reached the island of Antigua—the end of the journey. She celebrated her arrival with a burger and fries.

    1. (1) What made Harrison participate in the 2020 Talisker Whisky Atlantic Challenge?
A . Her childhood hobby and dream. B . Her experience of watching a race. C . Her swimming teaching experience. D . Her family members' encouragement.
    2. (2) Which of the following best describes Harrison's ocean trip?
      A . Adventurous. B . Pleasant. C . Boring. D . Expensive.
    3. (3) When did Harrison begin rowing across the Atlantic Ocean alone?
      A . In November. B . In December. C . In January. D . In February.
    4. (4) What can we learn from Harrison's story?
A . The early bird catches the worm. B . Difficulties strengthen the mind. C . Behind bad luck comes good luck. D . No way is impossible to courage.

A Time magazine special project known simply as "Firsts" celebrates women who have made big achievements. These women have made their mark in business, entertainment, politics and more. The project hopes to provide girls and women with positive examples who assure (使确信)them that they can succeed.

The "Firsts" project includes video features (特写), a book and a webpage. The webpage has the women's pictures and short descriptions of their achievements. The project's producers, Spencer Bakalar and Diane Tsai, made video profiles (简介) of 37 of the 46 original women featured by the project. And the webpage anticipates that more women will be added as they become new "Firsts".

The women featured in "Firsts" have achieved success in many fields. Eileen Collins was the first woman to command a space shuttle. Jennifer Yuh Nelson was the first woman to direct a major Hollywood movie alone—Kung Fu Panda 2. Serena Williams set a record for tennis Grand Slam singles titles.

The road to success hasn't always been smooth for these women. It took hard work to reach excellence. Many of them also put up with rude comments because they were women. But they also received support from key people, especially parents. Many of the women also speak about the difficulty of balancing work and family life. Their work sometimes required them to sacrifice time with their children or miss important family events. Yet several of them also say that they see their work as setting a good example for their children. They want their sons and daughters to see them working and know that they, too, can achieve remarkable things.

Michelle Phan was the first woman to build a US $500 million company from a web series. She tells entrepreneurs (企业家)to find a problem that they care about and then offer a way to solve it. That is vital advice that anyone in any field should follow.

    1. (1) What is the purpose of the "Firsts" project?
A . To teach girls how to design a webpage. B . To introduce successful people to children. C . To celebrate businesswomen's achievements. D . To encourage girls to succeed by giving superb examples.
    2. (2) What do we know about the "Firsts" project?
A . It has recorded 46 videos. B . It is going to find more women. C . It was launched by a businesswoman. D . It gives a full account of successful people's life.
    3. (3) The author develops Paragraph 3 mainly____.
A . by time B . by cause and effect C . by example D . by comparison and contrast
    4. (4) What does the underlined word "sacrifice" in Paragraph 4 mean?
      A . Invest. B . Devote. C . Fill up. D . Give up.
  • 3.  阅读理解

Suppose you are out shopping and come across an acquaintance who starts telling you a story that seems to be dragging on and on. You want to seem interested, so you offer the occasional "Oh" or "I see". To your surprise, though, this person angrily stops in their tracks and says, "Sorry if I'm boring you!"

Where did this come from? Clearly, your body language must have betrayed you. The idea that verbal (口头的) and nonverbal messages can conflict was the inspiration for a recently published study from Yale University's Lueylle Armentano. As part of her study of communication in relationships, Armentano's research also examined communication channels in people meeting for the first time.

To test the role of verbalnonverbal mismatch on emotional communication, Armentano and her partner created experimental conditions to see what happens when someone asks for help from strangers. The research team created videotapes of a fellow Yale student expressing nervousness in his words, bodily gestures, or both. The bodily gestures included running his hands through his hair, grabbing his arm, and facially expressing uneasiness. The key question was whether the other participants, another 82 Yale students, would believe the student and provide the help he was requesting. They needed to give their responses.

Turning to the findings, those nonverbal cues (提示) of nervousness had a greater impact on helping behavior than the verbal cues. Surprisingly, helping behavior was the highest when verbal expressions of nervousness were low but nonverbal cues were high.

Recognizing that your body language can outweigh your words means that you need to be mindful of what your body is doing when you're interacting with others. Generally, when someone is speaking to you, you want to look like you're interested. Not only should you maintain eye contact, but you should keep your body still and face toward the other person. If you're not trying to look interested, it may be more polite to say you have to be somewhere else.

    1. (1) What is Paragraph 1 mainly about?
A . The obvious advantages of body language. B . A situation where body language is a must. C . An example of verbalnonverbal mismatch. D . The proper way to interact with old friends.
    2. (2) What were the 82 Yale students asked to do?
A . Express nervousness in their words. B . Identify the types of body language. C . Try to win the nervous student's trust. D . Respond to the nervous student's request.
    3. (3) What played the most important role in helping the student win kindness?
A . His sincere verbal expressions. B . His bodily gestures of nervousness. C . His positive attitude to nervousness. D . His good manners in front of others.
    4. (4) What does the author intend to do in the last paragraph?
      A . Make a prediction. B . Offer suggestions. C . Present some facts. D . Give some warnings.

With rounds of pioneering space flights that could set the stage for future space tourism,it is worth looking at what might be involved for the human exploration of Mars, though it's likely decades away. Technological challenges aside,as we continue to expand our exploration of Mars, there is a question:What might be the lessons of past voyages of discovery that we should think about?

Human exploration has led to many extraordinary new discoveries,but it has also led to the exploitation (开发) of resources. Not long after early European settlers arrived in America,they declared their independence and created the constitution by which modern American society functions. However, this did not prevent the settlers from referring to native people as savages and taking away their rights to liberty,happiness,and even survival. Native Americans were quickly killed by wars and new diseases as the new settlers expanded their land. The natural environment,with which they had established a harmonious relationship,was similarly destroyed by the settlement.

Mars certainly has an impossible environment for human life,but on Mars,humans will be the invasive (侵略的) species. Will our landing on Mars break the ecosystem on Mars?It is possible that Mars has ideal minerals for future development. But apart from technology challenges,will the mining have a disastrous environment impact on this red neighbour as it has already had on Earth?

The achievements of space exploration are certainly to be applauded. The contributions of the related research on chemistry,medicine and many others are potentially limitless. However,as we look to exploring worlds beyond our own,we need to begin now to look at history to consider how best to engage with different life forms,cultures and environments. We may be capable of writing a law,but we first need to clear our potential invasive impact on another planet that may be completely defenseless.

    1. (1) What does the underlined word in Paragraph 2 refer to?
A . Modern American society. B . The creation of constitution. C . The settlement of Europeans. D . The exploitation of resources.
    2. (2) What's the author's concern about the exploration of Mars?
A . Humans cannot survive on Mars. B . Humans may bring new diseases to Mars. C . The exploration may destroy Mars' ecosystem. D . Technology challenges will make mining on Mars hard.
    3. (3) What's the author's suggestion for future space exploring?
A . Making relevant laws properly. B . Conducting more scientific researches. C . Predicting its impacts on other planets. D . Learning from past exploration experiences.
二、任务型阅读(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)
  • 5.  根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。

Ways to Grow Your Own Plant Supports Instead of Buying Them

Many new gardeners think it is necessary to buy new items for their gardens, when in fact, careful design and the right plant choices can mean that your garden can actually provide the things you need.

One common example of the things that people buy when they could grow them in their own garden is plant supports. . While there are numerous plant supports on the market, my professional take is that you can do without buying any of these at all.

Many climbing and vining plants require some support as they grow. Sometimes, the plants you grow beside climbers or vines can provide all the support they need. . The same thing can be true of a number of taller perennials (多年生植物). Growing them close can prevent them being blown over in strong winds. , as you will need to think about competition and avoid overcrowding.

Of course, other living plants will not always be able to provide the support that is required. I find growing trees like the hazel or willow means you always have suitable material to use in your own garden. . Do so early on in garden establishment and over time, you can easily become selfsufficient in garden plant supports—even in a small garden.

, it can be helpful to think about longerterm needs in your garden. Grow not just eatable plants, but also a range of other plants which will allow you to become more selfsufficient over time.

    A. Plenty of trees grow relatively quickly

    B. Thick planting should be handled with care

    C. Before you buy plant supports for your garden

    D. Planting these trees in your garden can be a great choice

    E. So when designing your garden and deciding which plants to grow

    F. Plants like short peas can simply be grown close together and will hold each other up

    G. Plant supports can be living, growing plants or branches cut from elsewhere in the space

四、语法填空(共10小题;每小题1.5分,满分15分)
  • 7.  阅读下面短文,在空白处填入1个适当的单词或括号内单词的正确形式。

Nowadays college graduates spend more and more money on job hunting. According to a recent survey, almost every graduate  (spend) some money on finding a job. And clothing, transportation, resumes producing and training expense are the main  (aspect) that cost them a lot of money.

As to this phenomenon, different people have different views. Some say it is necessary for graduates to spend money (produce) embellished resumes and buying suitable clothes, can give interviewers a good impression and increase their chance of success. However, others don't think so. They argue that the high expenditure can increase their parents' (finance) burden since most students have no regular income. Apart from that, the (decorate) resumes do little help to find a job most HR managers pay more attention to skills.

In my opinion, there is  wrong for graduates to invest some money on job hunting. But they should bear  mind that it is their knowledge, skills as well as experience that matter a lot. So they must have  rational attitude toward what they should buy and how much money they should spend.
