Five-year-old Willard Wigan couldn't tell the difference between an M and a W or a 6 and a 9 because of dyslexia, a learning disability. Usually, his mind drifted — to playing outside, to his dog, or to the ants. Willard was especially curious about those ants. He felt like them, small and insignificant. He noticed the ants were coming and going from a hole in the dirt. Gathering pieces of wood, Willard constructed a little building for ants.
At school, Willard still had problems, but he knew he could do something special. Willard created tiny furniture for the ant houses. His artistic skill increased, and a love for little things began to grow. At age nine, Willard began carving (雕刻) faces on toothpicks. When he showed his mother the carved faces, she said, "This is what you do well. You must work hard to be the best." Years later, Willard carves the tiniest artwork in the world! His sculptures are so small that several can fit on a full stop at the end of a sentence.
Willard works best at night when there are few disturbances. He often works for months to complete a sculpture. Willard's favorite paintbrush is one hair from the back of a dead fly! To move his sculptures, Willard uses an eyelash. But even that can be tough. Once, while moving a microscopic Alice in Wonderland, his cell phone rang. Terrified, Willard took in a quick breath. When he looked back, Alice was gone. After working for weeks to carve her, he'd accidentally breathed her in!
Willard sculpts everything from famous people to fictional characters. Because of their beauty and rarity, his sculptures have made Willard a wealthy man. But he says, "Success isn't about material things like an expensive watch or a costly ring; it's about persevering and achieving your dreams." Willard Wigan who felt small as a boy has shown something small can really be big.
As more schools open for in-person learning and some organized sports start again, many children are returning to the world after having packed on extra body weight. While data is few on whether there's been a rise in children's weight over the pandemic(大流行病), some health professionals have seen worrisome signs. Suzannah Stivison, a nurse in Kensington, Md. , said that some of her patients put on what she calls "the other COVID- 19"— as in, 19 pounds.
A loss of daily arrangements, in school and extracurriculars, left kids looking for a sense of control that many have found in eating. One of the ways that people regained a routine and a schedule within their families was most likely around meals. Since last March, adults joined the bread-baking craze and ate junk food as they liked.
Stivison herself admits the bad effect of the pandemic. "I never have Cheetos in my house. But all of a sudden, they appeared, "she said. "And this has been a phenomenon that I have seen in lots of houses. Eating became something we could control. And it's also something we use for comfort."
Children tend to gain weight during periods like summer vacation, when fewer are getting regular exercise through organized sports and physical education. But there are supportive ways parents can help get their kids back to a healthier lifestyle. It's less about talking and more about setting an example. Talking about risk factors such as Type 2 diabetes and heart disease doesn't really work, especially with younger kids. Kids know they're heavier than their peers. They know they get out of breath.
However, parents can model good habits like exercising an hour a day or keeping the house stored with healthier foods. "It really comes down to the modeling and the opportunity we can control what food comes into the house," Stivison said. "And so guess what? I've stopped buying Cheetos. "
Is it likely that a person who originally has no language ability is cheerfully discussing the World Cup with you? The answer is yes.
In a paper published in Nature Communications on November 8, 2022, researchers have successfully changed the brain waves of an aphasic (失语症) paralyzed person into sentences, which are displayed on the computer screen and can "say" thousands of words, as is intended.
This participant is 30 years old. A decade ago he was aphasic due to stroke, his arms and legs unable to move. He depended on a pole pinned on the baseball cap to click the letters on the screen to communicate with people. It's quite inconvenient.
Last year researchers from the University of California used the latest technology to implant (植入) a device into the speech motor area of his brain and connect it with a neural (神经的) instrument to monitor brain wave patterns when he expressed different words. They used computer programs to build a language model with a vocabulary of 50 words for him. When he used these words to "speak" in his mind, his brain wave movement was turned into complete sentences and shown on the screen. For months the team recorded his neural activity when he "spoke", used AI to identify various patterns and linked them to the words. Once a researcher asked on the screen, "Do you want some water?" And he answered, "No. I'm not thirsty."
"The spelling speed of the device reaches 29.4 characters per minute. The character error rate is only 6.13%. The offline test results show it can be expanded to a large vocabulary containing 9000 words, maintaining a low character error rate-8.23%," said Sean Metzger, the lead author of the paper. "Aphasic people like to use this device as it makes communication convenient. Anything is possible."
More aphasic people are needed to participate in the test, which is still a long way from promotion. Experts warn although the study results are impressive, electrode implantation is risky.
Have you ever gotten a sudden burst of motivation (动力) to work out that only lasts a week? Or created a whole workout plan only to lose that motivation a few days later? There was a time when I hated working out. But now, working out is one of my favorite things to do. It wasn't easy, but I found a couple of ways to make myself stick to it.
Stop telling yourself that you don't have time to work out. You could take 10 minutes out of your day to take a walk around campus. Even if it's only a small amount, any exercise is enough to get you started.
When I was building my workout schedule, I experimented with many different activities. I found that the ones I loved the most were Pilates and yoga. After I started doing them more, I started looking forward to my workouts.
Find ways to make exercising more fun. You can watch your favorite show while working out. And you can also try switching up the setting where you work out by taking a walk in the park — anything to get yourself excited to work out.
It's okay to take a break. When you first start working out, it can be difficult. I was getting all sorts of aches and pains when I first started. Please remember to take a break. Once you're feeling better, you can get back to it.
Sticking to a workout plan can be difficult, but if you follow some of these tips, you may find that you're able to work out more consistently.
A. Remember that exercising has a lot of great benefits.
B. You can work out with friends or family.
C. So, if you're trying to work out more often, here are some tips.
D. Your body needs to reset.
E. Try many activities to find one that you love.
F. And if you're feeling discouraged, just remember that you're not alone.
G. It doesn't matter how busy your schedule is.
Every Christmas, we get "The Box" from my uncle, who owns a local sporting goods store. He 1 uniforms to the sports teams and does T-shirt printing for parties. Every Christmas, instead of 2 , he sends us the rejects(废品)from his shop.
One year, we got caps that sported a company's misspelled 3 . It was "Lovie's Mower Service" 4 "Louie's Mower Service"
Another year, we got a birthday party T shirt for a woman's ninety sixth birthday when 5 to be her ninety seventh birthday. And another time we all got green football socks that weren't exactly the 6 color for the football team that had 7 them.
You never know what you're going to get out of "The Box", so we play a 8 with it on Christmas Eve. My father 9 one item at a time, and each of us has the 10 to keep it or not. It goes around the whole 11 , and if someone wants it, he 12 it, if no one wants it, it goes in the pile to charity.
We have had a million 13 over the years, with family reunion shirts, baseball pants, and different minor league baseball teams' clothes with colorful names. "The Box" never 14 us.
I'm not sure what we will do if my uncle runs out of things to send us! It's a 15 , if a bit wacky (古怪), Christmas tradition.

The Sports Day was fast coming to the school. All the children were very excited and were practicing for the big race. Jim, one of the fast runners of the school was confident that he would win so he was not doing anything at all. "You have to work hard to come first in the race, Jim. You are not practicing at all," said Jim's mother.
"Mom, you know how fast I am! Then why should I waste my time running? Only I will win;no one else will win!" shouted Jim. "Jim, you may be right but talent without hard work is not good at all. This laziness of yours will cost you greatly," his mother warned him. Jim just laughed and shrugged (耸肩) his shoulders. He was so confident that would win the prize as no one else in his class was as fast as he was!
Tim, a classmate of Jim was also participating in the running race. He was not a fast runner. However, he was very devoted and practiced till late night and had developed great endurance (耐力) and willpower (意志) to win the race.
There were a few days left for the Sports Day but Jim did not practice at all. On the other hand, Tim practiced day and night. The Sports Day was almost around the corner but Jim was confident that no one could beat him and had not practiced at all. But Tim with his devotion and hard work had become a very fast runner.
At last, the Sports Day arrived. All the students crowded the ground to cheer their favorites. The signal was given to the participants to begin the race. The coach blew the whistle and everyone began to run towards the finishing line. It was so exciting. Jim and Tim left all the racers far behind. Both of them were neck to neck.
