To raise money for restaurant workers who had to stay at home during COVID, two brothers, Aiden and Louis Ardine, decided to walk 3,200 miles across America to raise money.

Having just arrived on the sands of the Pacific Ocean, Aiden and Louis Ardine have now completed their five-month walk which started on the Asbury Park boardwalk in New Jersey. They hoped to raise $30,000 for some charities (慈善组织) that were helping restaurant workers waiting for lockdown (隔离) to end, but ended up making $70,000 — which they gave way to the COCO Fund and the Restaurant Workers' Community Foundation.

"This would not have been possible without the help of a huge community of people, whether people were donating or helping us guide our way across the United States." said Aiden Ardine. "This was surely an adventure full of hope, and it proved people are born good and want to help their neighbors."

Just like cross-country trips in this nation, their journey was characterized by amazing views, long roads, and helpful strangers: like a man who passed them in the extreme heat of summertime Iowa, before doubling back and giving them a cold Gatorade; or a Nevada campground manager who left them stay for free.

In Utah they had what the naturalist John Muir would have described as an "interview" with a black bear, when rounding a corner in the path, they found themselves within a few feet of it.

When they reached San Francisco, their supporters were waiting for them on the beach. Afterwards they flew home along with their mom who had been there to meet them. After their adventurous stay away from home, we can only imagine she was really feeling proud of her sons.

    1. (1) What did the two brothers collect money for?
A . Setting up some charities. B . Helping to end the lockdown. C . Completing their five-month walk. D . Aiding restaurant workers stuck at home.
    2. (2) Which word can best describe the two brothers?
      A . Humorous. B . Caring. C . Curious. D . Honest.
    3. (3) What happened to the brothers in Utah?
A . They met with a bear. B . They were interviewed. C . They visited a naturalist. D . They were lost in the path.
    4. (4) Which of the following is a suitable title for the text?
      A . A Long Journey B . Walk with Love C . A Proud Mother D . Adventure with Fun

An Indonesian librarian is lending books to children in exchange for trash they collect in a novel way to clean up the environment and get the kids to read more.

Each weekday, Raden Roro Hendarti, a librarian in Indonesia's Java Island rides her three-wheeler with books piled up at the back for children in Muntang village to exchange for plastic cups, bags and other waste that she carries back. As soon as she shows up, little children, many accompanied by their mothers, surround her "Trash Library" and ask loudly for the books. They are all carrying trash bags and Raden's three-wheeler quickly fills up with them as the books fly out. She's happy the kids are going to spend less time on online games as a result.

"Let us get kids to read more and build a culture of literacy from a young age," Raden said. "We should also take care of our waste in order to fight against climate change and to save the earth from trash," she said.

She collects about 100 kg of waste each week, which is then sorted out by her colleagues and sent for recycling or sold. She has a stock of 6,000 books to lend and wants to take the mobile service to neighboring areas as well.

Kevin Alamsyah, an eager 11-year-old reader, looks for waste lying in the village. "When there is too much trash, our environment will become dirty and it's not healthy. That's why I look for trash to borrow a book," he says.

The literacy rate for above-15-year-olds in Indonesia is around 96 percent, but a September report by the World Bank warned that the pandemic will leave more than 80% of 15-year-olds below the minimum reading level identified by the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development.

Geoffrey is a 10-pund pink delivery robot developed by Canadian company Tiny Mile. It is controlled from a distance by a human using a computer and a joystick(操纵杆), navigating with GPS and watching through cameras.

With Geoffrey, we don't need to keep delivery humans standing around waiting for the order to be ready, and all those restaurant humans watching their food get cold when the driver hasn't shown up- two big problems in the industry.

Account manager Omar Elawi says "Right now, the delivery robots are mostly controlled by young people with a history of gaming, who are comfortable navigating(定位)the streets on a street with a joystick. But we are trying to push the idea of jobs for disabled people who could work from home.

Tiny Mile sees their market as being very local food service. Even though Geoffrey can run for eight hours, it is meant to travel a little over a mile at walking speed, so that delivered food will be fresh and hot.

Some people wonder whether the delivery robots can survive if someone tries to turn them over or steal their lunch, but Elawi says this has not been a big problem. "There have been no real problems, an amazing reaction actually. A couple of kids were throwing snowballs. Many people would actually help it when it got struck in the snow." Soon it will even have a speaker so that the driver can say thank you for the help.

Another different thing about Tiny Mile's delivery robots is that the drivers are paid. Edward Trill says, "Unlike usual delivery robots, Geoffrey isn't here to take away jobs, but eventually create more-with higher pay." It will also be more environmentally friendly as it products more. A few years from now it is going to sound silly that we use a car to carry a food box." He adds.

    1. (1) What do we know about Geoffrey?
A . It works all by itself. B . It weights as much as an adult. C . It can produce delicious food. D . It can improve delivery service.
    2. (2) What can we learn from Omar Elawi's words in paragraph 3?
A . They want to provide delivery service for disabled people. B . Young people are their first choice to work with the robots. C . They plan to involve disabled people in operating the robots. D . Young people are more interested in robots than other groups.
    3. (3) What's Elawi's attitude towards the use of robots.
      A . Amazed. B . Confident. C . Concerned. D . Doubtful.
    4. (4) How is Geoffrey different from other delivery robots?
A . It won't reduce job opportunities B . It can say thank you to people. C . It can travel faster than cars. D . It won't consume energy.
