Since being introduced to chess at the age of six, Tanitoluwa "Tani" Adewumi has had one goal. He wants to become the world's youngest-ever Grandmaster—the highest title a chess player can achieve. The record is currently held by Russian chess player Alexandrovich Karjakin, who won the title in 2002 at the age of 12.

To work for his goal, the gifted chess player practiced for up to 11 hours every day after school. On May 1, 2021, the now 10-year-old Tani became the newest national chess master of the United States. The title, awarded by the United States Chess Federation (USCF), requires players to get a rating of between 2200 to 2400. Tani achieved a rating of 2223 by defeating two chess experts, a master, and an international master. Tani said the secret to his success was thinking of his plays ahead of time.

The now fifth-grader first knew and fell in love with chess in 2017 after being exposed to the basics by a part-time teacher at school in Manhattan, New York. However, his mother, Oluwatoyin, didn't let him join the school's chess club due to the travel and chess competition costs. The family of four, who were living in a homeless shelter, did not have extra money to spare. When Oluwatoyin explained the family's situation to the chess club's instructor, Russell Makofsky, he instantly cancelled all costs for the young boy.

Tani did not disappoint those who supported him. Over less than a year after joining the club, he had garnered seven trophies(奖杯)and was ranked 27 in his age category. In 2019, the then eight-year-old, who was still living in a homeless shelter, made national headlines when he defeated 73 competitors to win the New York State Scholastic Chess K-3 Championship. His amazing story caught much attention and a GoFundMe campaign, set up by Makofsky, helped raise enough money for Tani and his family to move into a new home.

    1. (1) What can we learn from paragraph 2?
A . Tani's efforts paid off. B . Tani did badly at school. C . Tani hardly practiced chess. D . Tani's thoughts were simple.

      A . His mother. B . His teacher. C . Alexandrovich Karjakin. D . Russell Makofsky.
    3. (3) Why did Tani's mother disagree to let him join the chess club?
A . The family was too poor to cover the costs. B . The competition in the club was too fierce. C . She was afraid that he was not independent. D . She wanted him to concentrate on his study.
    4. (4) What does the underlined word "garnered" in the last paragraph probably mean?
      A . Assessed. B . Designed. C . Gained. D . Missed.

In August 2020, Kate Wilson, a 16-year-old from Shrewsbury, posted on the social media video platform TikTok a series of sentences from books she had read. Set to a piece of soft music, the short video plays out as Wilson holds up copies of the books. "You have been the last dream of my soul," from A Tale of Two Cities. "Whatever our souls are made his and mine are the same," from Wuthering Heights. It has been viewed more than 1.2 million times.

These posts, called BookTok, can attract millions of views, and light an appreciation of books in young readers again, "I started reading again after six years when I came across BookTok for the first time last October," says Mireille Lee, 15.

People who are consuming this content watch a 32-second video and someone's like: 'This book has romance, and it's really heartbreaking. Thankfully, it's only a fiction.' And then the viewers think: 4Oh, OK. Those are all things that I'm interested in. I'll go and buy By December 2020, Wilson was being contacted regularly by publishers, who had realized that TikTok "really does sell books".

We know that China is the largest and fastest-growing consumer market in the world. What is less well understood are the forces that shape consumerism in the world's most populous country. In my view, there are some social and cultural aspects at play that drive consumer spending.

Consumerism is related to freedom. To have a choice means to have consumer choice. You are what you consume. Consumption is an expression of self. It allows you to explore the world through its products, to experiment with lifestyle choices, and to do so safely and anonymously(匿名). You might never get to France, but you can try French wine. California might be far, but you can go to Shanghai Disneyland. Indeed, the enthusiasm for choice is reflected in the enthusiasm Chinese consumers have for online shopping.

Consumerism is a statement of success. American economist Thorstein Veblen popularized the concept of "conspicuous consumption". When consumption is no longer driven only by need, it becomes a way of making a statement that you have disposable(可自由支配的)income and you can —at least in certain respects—enjoy life on your terms. Simple pleasures—a pair of shoes, a smartphone, designer clothing — become statements of personal identity.

The collective experience is focused. We like participating in group events. FOMO, the Fear of Missing Out, goes beyond cultures. But I suspect this trend is stronger in China than in the West because Confucian culture does not celebrate outsiders as the West's culture does. Social media reinforce(强化)this collective pattern so that shopping and dining are shared experiences. Opinions are crowd-sourced. And the merchants reinforce this pattern by supporting holiday sales, group buying, and other promotions.

Successful brands in China are able to handle most or all of the above considerations. The consumer must not only be delighted with your product. The journey of the consumer must also respect these socio-cultural aspects.

    1. (1) What's mainly talked about in the passage?
A . Chinese are growing wealthier. B . China's fast-growing market economy. C . Chinese socio-cultural influences on consumerism. D . Chinese consumers' preference for quality rather than quantity.
    2. (2) What does Paragraph 2 focus on?
A . Shopping online is a new experience. B . Consumption can be a reflection of freedom. C . Foreign products can be purchased in China. D . Shopping around the world is a favorable choice.
    3. (3) What do the underlined words "conspicuous consumption" in Paragraph 3 mean?
A . The ability to cover one's real need in daily life. B . Spending money in order to keep up with others. C . The purchase of expensive items to display status. D . Buying plenty of goods and delivering them to others.
    4. (4) Why does the author suspect FOMO is stronger in China?
A . Social media play a bigger role in their lives. B . Following the trend is what people like better. C . Chinese people have less contact with the strangers. D . Confucian culture is less likely to appreciate outsiders.
