Horses have long pulled tourist carts through Jordan's ancient city of Petra, but animal rights groups are driving a project to start replacing them with electric vehicles.

A small team of 10 rechargeable e-carts now take visitors through the rose-colored road leading to the famed capital of the Nabateans, which dates back to the first century BC.

"The e-cart produces no pollution or smoke and the change has reduced the cases of animal mistreatment," said Suleiman Farajat, head of the Petra Development and Tourism Regional Authority. The new golf buggy-style (马车式) electric vehicles have less impact on the surroundings because the horse cart wheels used to hit the sides of the road. The horse waste also caused a bad smell in the place, and cleaning it was not easy.

Animal rights group PETA, which had blamed the use of the overworking animals, has described the project as a major first step to protect working animals. The group hopes to work with officials toward the day when there will be only animal-free transportation at Petra.

The change has also been well received for another reason — helping to make the UNESCO World Heritage Site accessible to elderly and disabled visitors with the newly designed e-carts. Austrian tourist Rudy, 43, who uses a wheelchair, said he had repeatedly postponed a visit, but was now very happy to have made the trip. "Not only disabled people but also people who have difficulty walking for a long distance now have a chance to see this amazing place," he said.

For now, the Petra authority says it will keep some of the horses to preserve the character of the place, as it is a world heritage site.

    1. (1) What is the disadvantage of using horse carts?
A . Their speed is too slow. B . Their horses waste food. C . They are difficult to clean. D . The wheels damage the road.
    2. (2) What do we know about the animal rights group?
A . They have created an animal-free transportation day. B . They sing high praise for keeping horse working hard. C . They are happy to see the progress in animal protection. D . They have persuaded the government to use no horse carts.
    3. (3) What makes it possible for Rudy to visit Petra?
      A . His improved health. B . The better environment. C . His advanced wheelchair. D . The newly designed e-cart.
    4. (4) What is the text mainly about?
A . E-carts replace horse carts in the ancient Petra. B . Animal rights group calls for protection of animals. C . Government takes measures to protect heritage sites. D . Convenient traffic helps tourism in Jordan to boom.

Those concerned that robots are taking over the world can rest easy-for now. Though the androids have proved useful at performing ordinary tasks, they are not ready for prime time. At least that appears to be the case at Japan's cutting-edge Henn-na Hotel chain where over half of the robot staff is being replaced by humans.

The first Henn-na Hotel opened in July 2015, where guests were greeted and checked-in by either a family-friendly English-speaking dinosaur robot or a Japanese-speaking humanoid. Autonomous robots stood ready to help guests carry luggage to their rooms, while a cute doll-shaped android called Churi, placed inside each room, provided them with information about nearby attractions. Even the hotel's garbage cans were robotic.

Not surprisingly, the lodging, recognized in 2016 as the world's first robot-staffed hotel by Guinness World Records, drew in curious visitors from all around the world.

But as the years have passed, the hotel's main draw — its employees — are becoming less of a novelty (新颖) and more of a bother. Also as the robots are "aging", they are costing more to repair and maintain. Earlier this month, the hotel chain's parent company H. I. S. announced that it had decided to "fire" over half of the robot employees and replace them with humans. Among them are the chain's two robot receptionists. In addition to scaring young guests, they are also unable to photocopy guests' passports-a requirement when checking into a Japanese hotel--forcing human employees to step in each time. Also, out are the cute Churi robots, which have proved unable to answer even the simplest questions and annoyed guests by interrupting their conversations.

While this is a setback, the company's officials are not discouraged. They plan to continue with their ambitious expansion plans and believe the human-robot interaction is a learning process." When you actually use robots, you realize there are places where they aren't needed." said one of the officials.

    1. (1) What could robots in the first Henn-na Hotel do?
A . Offer guests traffic information. B . Help guests pack their luggage. C . Greet guests in English or Japanese. D . Direct guests to check in at the front desk.
    2. (2) What's one of the problems of the "fired" robots?
A . They cause trouble to customers. B . They ignore instructions. C . They annoy human employees. D . They are beyond repair.
    3. (3) What can be inferred about the officials of Henn-na Hotel chain?
A . They think highly of their interaction with customers. B . They are against the use of state-of-art equipment. C . They plan to hire more cute Churi robots. D . They've realized the limitations of robots.
    4. (4) What is the best title for the text?
A . Robot Employees-Ready for Prime Time B . Japanese Hotel Chain Expands Ambitiously C . Robot Employees-a New Novelty for Hotels D . Japanese Hotel Chain "Fires" Robot Employees

    Dear Andrew,

How nice to hear from you again! I think it is natural for you not to get used to live there. Here, I have some suggestion for you.

First of all, you should respect the local customs and try to involve yourself to the natives' lives. Secondly, don't be afraid to communicate with American students and make friends with us. Friendship will bring you happiness. What's more, it was better for you to join more outdoor activities with your friends. Those activities may help you relax and have a fun, that is of great benefit. Finally, mind your own manners and remain modest and honesty when getting along with your friends.
