The oldest stone buildings in the world are the pyramids. They have stood for nearly 5, 000 years, and it seems likely that they will continue to stand for thousands of years yet. There are over eighty of them along the banks of the Nile, some of which are different in shape from the true pyramids. The most famous of these are the "Step" pyramid and the "Bent" pyramid.

Some of the pyramids still look as much alike as they must have been when they were built thousands of years ago. Most of the damage suffered by the others has been at the hands of men who were looking for treasure or, more often, for stones to use in modern buildings. The dry climate of Egypt has helped to keep the pyramids in good condition, and their very shape has made them less likely to fall into ruin. These are good reasons why they can still be seen today, but perhaps the most important is that they were planned to last forever.

The "Step" pyramid had to be on the west side of the Nile, the side on which the sun set. This was for level of the river to protect it against the regular floods. It could not be too far from the Nile, however, as the stones to build it needed to be carried in boats down the river to the nearest point. Water transport was, of course, much easier than land transport. The builders also had to find a rock base, which was not likely to break under the great weight of the pyramid. Finally, it had to be near the capital, or better still near the king's palace so that he could visit it easily to personally check the progress being made on the final resting place for his body.

    1. (1) The most important reason why some pyramids remain in good condition is that           .
A . people have taken good care of them B . it doesn't rain often in Egypt C . they were well designed D . the government has protected them from damage
    2. (2) Most of the damage to the pyramids has been caused by             .
A . the regular floods B . the dry climate of Egypt C . the special shape of the pyramids D . people in search of building materials
    3. (3) The Egyptians built the pyramids along the banks of the Nile because            .
A . they believed in their god B . it was difficult to find a large rock base far from the Nile C . the river helped a lot in the transport of building materials D . it was not easy to choose a suitable place for the pyramids
    4. (4) The last paragraph of the passage mainly tells us             .
A . it was easy for the king to check B . water transport was easier than land transport C . there was a rock base for the "Step" pyramid to be built on D . why the "Step" pyramid had to be built on the west side of the Nile

In Europe, many people make friends between their countries through town twinning. Town or city twinning means two towns in different countries agree and decide to become "twins" with a sister city relationship.

The people find pen friends in the twin town. They exchange newspapers and stamps. The school teachers discuss teaching methods with the teachers in the twin town. Officials visit the twin town for celebrations. Ordinary people travel to the twin town, too, but not very often if it is far away.

Sometimes, schools even exchange their classes for two or three weeks! For example, German middle school students study for a while at the school in their twin town in Britain, staying with British families. A few months later, their British friends come to study in Germany.

Many British towns are so pleased with the results of the twinning that they set out to find more than one twin town!

Tonbridge, a small town in Kent, for example, has twin town in both Germany and France. Richmond near London has relationships with Germany, France and even a town in a Balkan country!

Town twinning can help make friends. It helps students improve their language skills, and also helps people to understand the differences between nations.

    1. (1) Twin towns develop      .
A . in the same country. B . between different countries. C . in the English-speaking countries only. D . between European countries and China.
    2. (2) Which country is NOT mentioned in the passage?
      A . Britain. B . France. C . China. D . Germany.
    3. (3) Which is one of the advantages of town twinning?
A . To earn more money. B . To set up schools. C . To develop industry and agriculture. D . To improve students' language skills.
    4. (4) Which is the best title for the passage?
A . Town Twinning. B . Friendly Towns. C . Making friends in different countries. D . Exchanging Teachers and Students.

    How to Make Good Conversation

"Conversation is the most sociable of all human activities. " I totally agree with this point. Conversation is the main part of everyone's daily life.  What's more, good conversation is the most interesting part for us. In my view, you should pay attention to the following three issues to make good conversation.

To start good conversation, we'd better prepare some questions. . We can ask some questions to show our politeness and care for others. Like, do you have a good sleep last night? Or what do you do in your spare time? Think twice before you throw a question to others.

We should pay attention to what others said and think in their shoes. Allow the others to do most of the talking. Be patient and hold interest for their comments and make some noise to show you are listening carefully. In this way you will get the credit for being a good conversationalist as well as a good listener and it will help you to make friends with others.

We always said eyes are the windows to the soul. Appropriate eye contact is like a great element of the main dish which makes it more delicious. . It will help us to improve mutual (相互的) understanding. Do not hesitate to look into them. But don't stare at them and don't look at them for too long a time. It would make others feel uneasy and unwilling to go on talking.

    A. Good questions make people feel comfortable.

    B. Without conversation, life would be as cold as a rock.

    C. The most important part of conversation is to listen.

    D. Enjoy good conversation and be friends with them.
