In today's world life is fast. If you don't slow down to enjoy it, you will definitely miss something. I've got two young boys and I have up until recently been an elementary school teacher. Days were busy. Get the boys ready for school and daycare. Work a full day. Pick them up after school. Cook dinner. Do housework. Get the boys into bed and before I knew it, the day was over! Time for me to hit the sack and do it all over again the next day!

Don't get me wrong. I wouldn't change anything. The boys are great. Everyone just gets stuck in these daily routines and tends to forget about fun until that one vacation week a year. Everyone needs a break and should have fun all year round. Just set aside one day a week and just go and do something. There are so many fun family things to do that won't break the bank. You don't need to head out to that theme park and spend a month's salary on one day. A nice day at the park or museum can entertain everyone. There are nearby state parks that you can easily run out to and camp in for under $50 for the entire family. How about family movie night? What about family video game night? There are so many ideas that folks seem to forget about. I encourage you to take a look at Modern Frugal Family. You can find all sorts of fun stuff to do with the family and search for all sorts of bargains. I know you will come up with some great ideas. If you do, you can share them with everyone. So get out there and enjoy life!

Studies have shown most people fail to realise how much time they spend on their smartphones each day.

Frank and Amelia's family were put to a test, using a free app called "Moment-Screen Time Tracker". The Vascellaros—Frank, Amelia, 14-year-old twins Frankie and Joe, and 17-year-old Sam—all said they did not really know they were spending so much time on their phones each day.

"Honestly, I don't feel like I'm on my phone a lot," Amelia Vascellaro said. Amelia was on her phone far less often than Frank, according to the app. While Amelia spent about an hour per day on the phone, Frank spent closer to four hours on his phone, which came as a shock to him. The children's times varied but they often spent more than a couple of hours on the phone as well.

Minneapolis-based Dr. Kirsten Lind Seal sees phone usage come up lot among families. Lind Seal said many family members' phone use has become problematic.

"If we hear more than once, 'Do you have to be on your phone right now? Can you please put your phone down? Did you hear what I said?' it may be a sign that it is negatively influencing our family relationships and our daily lives," she said.

Lind Seal said actually paying attention to how much time one spends on the phone is a good first step in deciding when to put it down.

She asks parents to encourage more face-to-face communication for teens and young adults as they continue developing their social and emotional skills. "What we find is that we are really losing out on empathy—the ability to understand other people's feelings and problems—when we spend a lot of time on our smartphones to communicate with other people," she said.

    1. (1) How did the Vascellaros feel about the test results?
      A . Satisfied. B . Doubtful. C . Uninterested. D . Surprised.
    2. (2) Why did Lind Seal mention the three questions in Paragraph 5?
A . To encourage people to live simple life. B . To ask people if they use phones too much. C . To explain the signs of problematic phone use. D . To show the importance of close relationships.
    3. (3) What is the text mainly about?
A . Too much use of smartphones. B . The influence of apps on teens. C . Children's safety on the Internet. D . Problems among family members.
    4. (4) From which is the text probably taken?
      A . A textbook. B . A journal C . A magazine D . A guidebook

If English means endless new words, difficult grammar and sometimes strange pronunciation, you are wrong. Haven't you noticed that you have become smarter since you started to learn a language?

According to a new study by a British university, learning a second language can lead to an increase in your brain power. Researchers found that learning other languages changes grey matter. This is the area of the brain which processes information. It is similar to the way that exercise builds muscles.

The study also found the younger people learn a second language, the better the effect is. A team led by Dr. Andrea Mechelli, from University College London, took a group of Britons who only spoke English. They were compared with a group of "early bilinguals" who had learnt a second language before the age of five, as well as a number of later learners. Scans showed that grey matter density (密度) in the brain was greater in bilinguals than in people without a second language. But the longer a person waited before mastering a new language, the smaller the difference was.

"Our findings suggest that the structure of the brain is changed by the experience of learning a second language," said the scientists. It means that the change itself increases the ability to learn.

Professor Dylan Vanghan Jones of the University of Wales, has researched the link between bilingualism and math skills. "Having two languages gives you two windows on the world and makes the brain more flexible.(灵活的) " he said, "You are actually going beyond language and have a better understanding of different ideas."

The findings were matched in: a study of native Italian speakers who had learned English as a second language between 2 and 34. Reading, writing.and comprehension were all tested. The results showed that the younger they started to learn, the better. "Studying a language means you get an entrance to another world." explained the scientists.

    1. (1) The main subject talked about in this passage is ________.
A . science on learning a second language B . man's ability of learning a second language C . findings that language learning can help brain power D . language learning and math study
    2. (2) The last sentence of the second paragraph is intended to ________.
A . say language learning is also a kind of physical labor B . prove that one needs more practice when he (she) is learning a language C . show the importance of using muscles when you learn a language D . make people believe language learning helps grey matter work well
    3. (3) We may know from the scientific findings that ________.
A . the earlier you start to learn a second language, the higher the grey matter density is B . there is no difference between a later second language learner and one who doesn't know a second language C . the experience of learning a second language has bad effects on people's brain D . the ability of learning a second language is changing all the time
    4. (4) The underlined word "bilinguals" probably means ________.
A . researchers on language learning B . people who are good at learning foreign languages C . people who can speak two languages D . active language learners

    Advice for High School Students

As a person who is graduating from high school very soon, I have some suggestions for students in high school or students who are soon going to be high school students. . I am sure others can benefit from reading them and will not make similar mistakes like me.

. Do not value first impression highly. Don't dismiss a person or an idea too early just because you immediately get a bad impression. You will miss many opportunities because of that. Don't try to please everybody. There is no way you can please everybody or get everybody to agree with you. . It is a huge waste of time.

Have respect for authority. No matter how much you may dislike them, just remember that teachers and parents care about you and they are only doing their jobs. . Don't argue with them and just obey them.

Realize a high school is not the real world. The real world isn't a closed environment. . What is rewarded in high school such as popularity and agreement is different from what is rewarded in the real world. If high school isn't working out for you, you may find yourself better at handling the real world.

    A. Do not be too quick to judge.

    B. So just learn to say the word "No" a lot.

    C. Listen to their advice and consider it carefully.

    D. Many of these are based on regrets that I have.
