David Rockefeller, the world's oldest billionaire, died at the age of 101 because of heart failure at his home in Pocantico Hills, New York. As a banker, philanthropist (慈善家) and presidential adviser, Rockefeller was worth $3.3 billion at the time of his death.
The heir (继承人)to the renowned Rockefeller fortune, borne out of his grandfather's founding of the Standard Oil Company, was the 604th richest person in the world when he died. A graduate of Harvard University, Rockefeller spent 35 years working for Chase Manhattan Bank and was known for his philanthropy. Throughout his life, he donated more than $2 billion of his fortune to various institutions. David Rockefeller arrived at the National Arts Awards in New York City.
"No individual has contributed more to the commercial and people's life of New York City over a longer period of time than David Rockefeller," former New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg said in a statement. During my time in City Hall, he was always there for the city when we called." At various times, Rockefeller donated $100 million to Harvard, $225 million to the Rockefeller Brothers Fund and $100 million to the Museum of Modern Art. Other people of his generosity included the Council on Foreign Relations, the Americas Society/Council of the Americas and the Stone Barns Center for Food and Agriculture.
Rockefeller also served as an adviser to many presidents, including George H. W. Bush. "Barbara and I were deeply sad to hear that our wonderful friend David Rockefeller, had passed from this good earth. So many knew him as one of the most generous philanthropists — and brightest Points of Light -- whose care and commitment to the widest range of worthy made countless lives touched and lifted," he said. " We send our most sincere and heartfelt condolences (吊唁)to his children and family. ''
A University College London modeling report looked at urban car use to conclude that cities have to become car-free to survive. The study notes the number of cars is actually increasing faster than the population — in 2019, 80 million cars were built while the population increased by 78 million. The production of these cars were responsible for 4% of global carbon dioxide emissions (二氧化碳排放).That's bigger than aviation and almost as big as the steel and concrete(混凝土) industries, and that's before you even fuel or charge them up.
The study authors construct a mathematical model where time is money, and residents choose between driving their cars and taking public transport on the basis of the time it takes to do the trip. It turned out that the more people who decide that driving is faster, the more crowded the roads, and the longer the trip takes.
One solution is to build more transit or bike lanes and reduce traffic lanes and parking to get more people out of cars. This would make it faster for everyone. But this is hard to do. The rapid growth of the urban population, land use policies, and the expansion of suburban areas make it impossible to walk or ride a bike to and from the office. It's also economically costly to introduce efficient public transport with high frequency and within easy walking distance.
There was a report coming from London showing there are incredible battles over every effort to calm streets and reduce traffic. It's got to the point where the drivers claim they actually represent disabled people who have to drive, businesses that need customers who drive, and poor people who have to breathe the exhaust. It's all upside down.
In the press release, Dr. Humberto Gonzalez Ramirez said," Currently, much of the land in cities is dedicated to cars. If our goal is to have more liveable and sustainable cities, then we must take part of this land and allocate (分配)it to alternative modes of transportation: walking, cycling, and public transport."
During a hurricane, strong winds hit the land. Winds reach speeds of 250 kilometers per hour or more. Some animals including lizards (蜥蜴), may get blown away. But with a good grip (紧抓), others can live through the storm. A new study suggests that such hurricanes can actually help lizards to some degree.
Colin Donihue, a scientist examined lizard species on several Caribbean islands. The process began in 2017, as Donihue was studying lizard populations in Turks and Caicos. A couple of weeks after he and other researchers left there, those islands were hit by hurricanes, first Hurricane Irma and then Hurricane Maria. Returning to the island a year later, he noticed that the populations looked different. The lizards he saw after the hurricanes had larger toe pads than those he'd examined the previous year before the hurricanes. He has looked at 12 island populations of the lizard species Anolis sagrei, and separately analyzed 188 Anolis species with populations that range from Florida to Brazil. He and his team cross-examined the size of their toe pads with the frequency and severity (强度) of Caribbean hurricanes. Over the past 70 years of hurricane data, the result stood out: larger toe pads had a close connection with more serious hurricanes.
The study better explained how evolutionary (进化的) processes are helping species become stronger, even as global climate change threatens their long-term survival. In the past hurricanes simply haven't been common enough to matter in an evolutionary timeline. But due to climate change, there will be more hurricanes. Some populations can be completely destroyed by hurricanes. But in the case of the lizards Donihue studied, the ones that survived these violent storms were the ones with larger toe pads. And their babies also had similarly large toe pads. That small change in their body tells us how species change as the environment around them changes as well.
Taking online classes from far away
Faiqa, a 15-year-old freshman at a public high school, logs(登陆) in to her all-remote classes each night from Pakistan in a time zone nine hours ahead. Max, who also attends school in the same state, has joined his Advanced Placement history class for about two months from Guayaquil, Ecuador..During the pandemic, almost nothing about school has been normal, so administrators and teachers have come up with a solution:.Some students in immigrant communities are logging in to school from thousands of miles away.
It is unclear how widespread the practice is. But out-of-country logins have become increasingly common since late fall according to educators in the country., and others temporarily left their homeland to care for sick relatives. However, because of the pandemic, they all can't come back home. Remote education is really useful for them. ."We recognize that the challenges of the pandemic may have temporarily changed circumstances for our families, and our schools are delivering strong virtual instruction to those who have chosen to learn remotely," Ms. Filson, the district's spokeswoman, says in a statement.
Max says he is grateful that he is still able to log in to classes during the special period of time. "," he says.

E. over two-thirds of young students find it easier to learn lessons online
F. Max's schoolmate, Naobe, participates in classes from northern Honduras
G. The officials say it is possible for students to log in from anywhere in the world
During a team of online learning, the teachers had done their best to keep students 1 during the COVID-19 pandemic. And students are now returning the favor by surprising their teachers with messages of 2.
"I wanted my professors to know they were 3 for all the inspiring words they say and their 4," Faith Williams, a student at a university, said. "His teacher-appreciation action kept 5 on my TikTok and in each video teachers broke down in front of their students, which was really moving," she said. Williams, own video surprised her 6 Michael Rapp, gained immediate attention from viewers and received 7 comments. " Rapp really 8 his students, lives and has great popularity across campus. You can tell by the comments on my TikTok that many students love the caring and 9 professor," she added.
Williams explained that she 10 her surprise via a mass email to her classmates, encouraging them to make their own signs and 11 them when to show them off. As seen in the video, it was perfectly 12 with the professor saying goodbye to the class as the 13 term ended.
" You can always find me and I'll always be there if 14 Good luck with everything in your life," Rapp said 15, before going speechless at the sight of the signs. "Thank you" he said with tears in his eyes. "Sorry if I got a little 16 right there, but thank you so much. I hope I had as much of 17 on you as you just did right here for me... That's something that I will definitely18forever. "
Many 19 receiving these teacher-appreciation videos displayed the same reaction as Rapp. "I will never forget this. It was so 20," one of them said.

I travelled to Baiyun Mountain last summer. I went hiking with a couple friends. It was a good trip at the beginning and something unexpected happen on the way. While we were climbing a long flight of stair, one of my friends suddenly felt a terribly pain in his stomach. Luckily we brought a tent with us. We had put up the tent, that he had a good rest. He took some medicine with some water and lying down for a rest. After the while, he felt better and we walked on. We all enjoyed us at the top of the mountain.
