This is my son Matthew's last night at home before college. I know that this is good news. I feel proud that Matthew will go to a great school. I know that this is the finest hour. But looking at the suitcases on his bed sends me out of the room to a hidden corner where I can't stop crying.
Through the sorrow, I feel embarrassed. "Pull yourself together!" I tell myself. There are parents sending their kids off to battle zones. How dare I feel so shocked and upset?
One of the great gifts of my life has been having my boys, Matthew and John Owen. Through them, I have explored the mysterious, complicated bond between fathers and sons. As my wife and I raised them, I have discovered the love and loss between my father and me. After my parents' divorce, I spent weekends with my dad in Ohio. By the time Sunday came around, I was unable to enjoy the day's activities because I was already afraid of the goodbye of the evening.
Now, standing among Matthew's accumulation of possessions, I realize it's me who has become a boy again. All my sadness and longing to hold on to things are back, sweeping over me as they did when I was a child.
His bed is tidy and spare. It already has the feel of a guest bed. In my mind I replay wrapping him in his favorite blanket. That was our nightly routine until one evening he said, "Daddy, I don't think I need a blanket tonight." I think of all the times we lay among the covers reading. I look at the bed and think of all the recent times I was annoyed at how late he was going to sleep. I'll never have to worry about that again, I realize.
For his part, Matthew has been a rock. He is treating his leaving as just another day at the office. And I'm glad. After all, someone's got to be strong. I'm proud that he is charging into the first chapter of his adult life with such confidence.
Bridging the gap between simple automation(自动化) and robots that can communicate with humans naturally is a big challenge, but major progress has been made in the past few years.
Research into social robots has shown that machines that respond to emotion(情感) can help the elderly and children, and could lead to robots becoming more widely socially acceptable.
Milo is both a robotic teacher and a student. Developers RoboKind created Milo to help children with autism(自闭症) learn more about emotional expression and empathy(共鸣) while collecting data on their progress to target learning and treatment. Milo's friendly face makes himself kind and the children are able to read his expressions.
Robots can also reduce stress in hospital settings. Expper Tech's Robin was designed as a robot to provide emotional support for children with medical treatment. Robin explains medical details to them, plays games and tells stories, and during treatment draws their attention away to reduce their feeling of pain.
Expper's robot uses Artificial Intelligence(AI) to create empathy, remembering expressions and conversations to build conversation for follow-up sessions. In trials at the Wigmore Medical Pediatric Clinic in Yerevan. Armenia, the team found that Robin led to a 34% weakening in stress and improve happiness of 26% in the 120 children who interacted(互动) with him at least once.
Today's simple systems are being trained to meet that demand. This includes ProxEmo, a little wheeled robot that can guess how you are feeling from the way you walk, and ENRICHME who helps older people to stay physically and mentally active. The problem is the fear that human jobs may be lost as robots become better at dealing with social situations.
A calorie deficit is a state in which you burn more calories than you consume. As one of the most popular approaches of losing weight, how does it work? For example, if you burn 2,500 calories per day but only eat 2,000, you have created a deficit of 500 calories per day. There is mathematical certainty. But this by no means tells the whole story about how calories deficit affects our lives.
Before wondering what a calorie deficit is, it's probably best to learn what a calorie is. A calorie is a unit that we use to track our body's energy expenditure(消耗) and storage. In order to just stay alive, human beings(and animals) burn calories. This means, even before we perform any activity, our bodies are already using energy(measured in calories) to keep us alive. Around 70% of the calories we consume are spent on just keeping our vital organs running. Thus, if a person consumes calories far more less than needed to look thin, it may have negative effects on the body.
When people pick up a calorie deficit, they often merely note that the calorie math is irrefutable(无可辩驳的). The question here is that not all calories are the same. If you eat a few bags of potato chip worth of calories to support the calorie intake needed to maintain or cut down on your weight, it will work. But this doesn't have the same effect on your body and overall health as a balanced nutritional meal containing the same amount of calories.
It seems like a simple unit of energy has become an object of our society's obsession. It needn't be that way. Remember, calorie deficits are just a tool, which serves a purpose in losing some weight and keeping track of your calorie intake seems simple enough.
First Aid Tips for Kids All Parents Should Know
No parents want to think about their children getting hurt or injured, yet it's impossible to keep their children in a safe place forever. All children are going to have injuries. . Here are the most common situations where your children may require first aid—and how to do it.
How to treat a cut. It's common for children to get scrapes (刮伤) and cuts from time to time, you should pay attention to it. The most important thing to remember when treating these is the importance of keeping the area clean to prevent infection (感染), and know when medical attention might be required.
How to treat an insect or animal bite. Many insect bites are uncomfortable but relatively harmless; animal bites almost always require medical follow-up
How to treat a bump (肿块) on the head But you should have a watchful eye on your children and contact your doctor with any problems. But most likely, your children are fine. If your children have experienced a serious head, neck, or back injury, do not move them.
How to treat nosebleeds. Nosebleeds are common in childhood and usually look, scarier than they are. If your children have a sudden nosebleed but seems otherwise fine, have them tilt (倾斜) their head forward a bit, and apply gentle pressure to the nose area by squeezing both nostrils (鼻孔) together between your thumb and forefinger. Call your doctor or visit the emergency room if the bleeding doesn't stop after 5-10 minutes.

A new United Nations climate report predicts Africa's rare glaciers (冰川) will disappear in the next 20 years. The report, called State of the Climate in Africa, (release) last Tuesday by the UN's World Meteorological (气象的) Organization (WMO) and other agencies. It warns that climate change will be the cause of the(disappear) glaciers in eastern Africa.
The report warns that shrinking glaciers at Mount Kilimanjaro in Tanzania, Kenya's Mount Kenya and the Rwenzori Mountains in Uganda are signs of widespread climate change to come. " the current shrinking rate continues, it will lead to total disappearance by the 2040s," the report says. The report notes that last year was Africa's third (warm) on record. Data shows temperatures on the continent were 0.86 degrees Celsius higher than the average in the 30 years leading up to 2010. The WMO warns that Africa's 1.3 billion people remain "(extreme) vulnerable (脆弱的)" as the continent keeps getting warmer a faster rate.
Petteri Taalas, Secretary-General of the WMO, said massive displacement, hunger and increasing climate events such as droughts and flooding are likely(continue). He added there is a great need for investments in Africa to develop systems and technology can help the continent deal with the effects of climate change. The money could be used to improve early warning systems and build (equip) to better observe weather and water movements.

It was Grandpa's 70th birthday. Early in the morning, I wake up excited. Before getting dressed quickly, I headed downstairs and found Mum and Dad were already there busily prepared lunch. I checked the gift special made for Grandpa, a video of his life story. Just before lunchtime, there came some guests, who turned out to be Grandpa's best friends from secondary school, all in seventies. They had a great fun talking to each other. There were a lot of laughter and quite a few tear in their eyes. Grandpa said excitedly it was the best birthday celebration he'd had but that he was grateful for that we had done for him.
