This year, several young athletes have shone brightly at the Beijing Winter Olympics, giving us a glimpse of their generation's nature.

Obviously, the young generation is filled with "brave warriors" who want to challenge impossibilities and push boundaries. Freestyle skier Gu Ailing is a good example. After she finished strong in the first two jumps in the women's free-ski Big Air event, it was certain that she could get a medal. But instead of taking heed of it , the 18-year-old skier pushed herself to the limit. On the last jump, Gu decided to attempt a difficult trick: a left double cork 1620 — four and a half rotations in the air — before landing". I have never done the 'left 16' before. I hadn't prepared much for it apart from two days on the air bag,"Gu told China Daily," but I felt it was a chance."

But for these young athletes, the sport is never just about scores, but also about having as much fun as possible.

Born in the US, Gu faced criticism and doubts for representing China in the Beijing Winter Olympics. When questioned by The Guardian, the girl said bluntly (直截了当地) she wasn't trying to make everyone happy. "I'm an 18-year-old girl out here living my best life. I'm having a great time."Gu said." It doesn't really matter if other people are happy or not, because I feel I' m doing my best and I'm enjoying the entire process."

Gu's good friend, Chinese snowboarder Su Yiming also shares a similar attitude. He takes sports as a way to have fun. After he was judged to have lost the gold to Canadian athlete Max Parrot in the men's slopestyle final, the 17-year-old didn't feel upset. Instead, he was happy to have the chance to compete with his idol.

"When I was on the podium (领奖台) hugging Max Parrot, it felt unreal," Su told China Daily." All I did today was enjoy the runs and concentrate on my tricks. As long as I am on my snowboard I am happy."

    1. (1) The phrase" taking heed of it "underlined in paragraph 2 can be replaced by       .
      A . playing it safe B . taking a risk C . avoiding mistakes D . taking part in it
    2. (2) What can we know about Gu Ailing according to the text?
      A . She didn't perform well. B . She is a post-00. C . She was an American. D . She isn't easy-going
    3. (3) Who got the gold medal in the men's slopestyle final?
      A . Not mentioned. B . Gu Ailing. C . Su Yiming. D . Max Parrot.
    4. (4) What does the reporter want to convey in this text?
A . The young generation shares a similar attitude. B . Young athletes show the nature of the young generation. C . Young Chinese dare to push the limits but also enjoy their career. D . Young athletes have shone brightly at the Beijing Winter Olympics.

"Your password has expired ,"a message said on my screen, with instructions for changing it. Coming up with a new code doesn't seem like a big deal, unless you work at my company, where we have to change it monthly, using at least one uppercase character, one lowercase character, one symbol, and one number. Oh, the whole password can't be fewer than eight characters. And I can't use any of the same passwords I've used in the past three months.

Suddenly I was very angry. What didn't make it any better was that I was deeply depressed after my recent divorce. Disbelief about what she had done to me was all I thought about. Every day.

I remembered a tip I'd heard from my former boss. He'd said:" I'm going to use a password to change my life." I couldn't focus on getting things done in my current mood. There were clear signs of what I needed to do to get control of my life again.

My password became the sign. My password reminded me that I shouldn't let myself be a victim of my recent breakup and that I was strong enough to do something about it.

I made my password Forgive@h3r. I had to type this several times a day. The simple action changed the way I looked at my ex-wife. That constant reminder led me to accept the way things had happened and find a new way of dealing with my depression. As the month wore on, I felt a slow healing begin to happen. By the time my server asked me to reset my password the following month, I felt free.

One month later, my dear Exchange server asked me yet again to reset my password. I thought about the next thing that I had to get done. My password became Quit@smoking4ever. I quit smoking overnight. This password was a painful one to type during that month, but doing it helped me to yell at myself in my mind as I typed that statement. It motivated me to follow my monthly goal. One month later, my password became Save4trip@thailand. Guess where I went three months later: Thailand.

Seeing how these reminders helped to achieve my goals kept me motivated and excited. While it's something difficult to come up with your next goal, keeping at it brings great results.

    1. (1) What does the word "expired "underlined in the 1st paragraph refer to?
      A . been renewed B . changed C . been mistaken D . become due
    2. (2) Which of the following passwords meets the author's company's requirements?
      A . buy@1ticket B . See@h3r C . Course4$Saving D . Dream4future
    3. (3) What can be inferred about the author according to the text?
A . He finally recovered well from his divorce. B . He started smoking to heal his broken heart. C . He saved enough money to have 4 trips in Thailand. D . He was always angry about his company's requirements for passwords.
    4. (4) What would be the best title of the text?
A . Never to be a victim of others' faults B . To motivate yourself by setting your goals C . How to come up with a new password D . A new way of dealing with my depression

The captain of the ship, the Beagle, wanted someone who would "profit by the opportunity of visiting distant countries yet little known". The person who answered the call was not the captain's first choice. It was a young man who had left medical school without completing his degree. What's more, he had recently received a letter from his father predicting that he would be "a disgrace to yourself and all your family". Despite all this, his adventures on this ship would lead to one of the most important scientific discoveries of all time.

The young man in question, Charles Darwin, was a geologist and naturalist, fascinated by rocks, plants and animals. The journey gave him the chance to study various living things in their natural environments. After Darwin had spent some time in South America, his room on the ship was crowded with samples of the plants and animals he had collected. As he studied these, he asked himself the question: how did different species come to exist?

At that time, people believed that all species had appeared on Earth at the same time, and had not changed since. But Darwin began to think differently. He noticed that some species of animals were very similar to each other. Maybe animals evolved as they adapted to their changing environments. It was just an idea, but enough to inspire Darwin to look for more evidence. When the Beagle reached the Galapagos Islands in 1835, Darwin saw a variety of new species, but it was the birds that interested him the most. Darwin noticed that there was a difference between the finches (雀科小鸟) on each of the islands. It seemed their beaks (鸟喙) had evolved according to what food was available on that particular island.

Darwin suspected the finches had evolved from a common ancestor, which had arrived on the islands a long time before. Over time, it had slowly evolved into many new species. And that was the answer to how new species of plants and animals came to exist: they evolved from earlier ancestors.

It was a completely new idea — a theory of evolution. Darwin explained this theory in his book, On the Origin of Species. Many people refused to believe that living things, including humans, had evolved from lower forms of life. But Darwin's scientific studies were so convincing that more and more people started to believe his theory.

Today, On the Origin of Species has changed ideas about life on Earth forever. And it all began with the journey on the Beagle.

    1. (1) Why did the captain of the Beagle choose Darwin to sail together?
A . Because he appreciated Darwin's talent and wanted to offer some help. B . Because he had recently received a letter asking for help from Darwin's father. C . Because he hoped this valuable expedition would also benefit someone who needed it. D . Because he thought Darwin's adventures might lead to an important scientific discovery.
    2. (2) Which of the following is the correct order to describe Darwin's exploration?

①Darwin suspected that the finches had evolved from a common ancestor.

②Darwin proposed a theory that living things had evolved from lower forms of life.

③Darwin wanted to know how different species came to exist.

④Darwin noticed there was a difference between the finches on the Galapagos Islands.

⑤Darwin studied various living things in their natural environments.

      A . ⑤③④①② B . ⑤④①③② C . ③④①⑤② D . ③⑤②④①
    3. (3) What was people's original attitude towards Darwin's book, On the Origin of Species?
      A . Supportive. B . Critical. C . Neutral. D . Suspicious.
    4. (4) Which of the following would be the main idea of this text?
A . Darwin's interest in various living things made him a great naturalist. B . Darwin's journey on the Beagle inspired his Theory of Evolution. C . Darwin went on a journey to confirm his scientific discovery. D . Darwin's discovery has changed ideas about life on Earth.

Rising through Stages to Realize Ourselves

Many modern people have the problem that they don't know who they are and what their purpose is. Once high school seniors graduate, they seem to lose their identity. They once studied hard, but after they stop working, they begin to lose their way.

In the theory of the Hierarchy of Needs (需求理论), Abraham Maslow put forward a similar situation, which consists of the five levels of a person's need. The fifth and final level is self- realization, which is where our final achievement lies.

I think self-realization has three major aspects. The first stage is acceptance, the second stage is discovery and the last stage is perseverance.

Acceptance is the first stage. We should be reminded that we are all born unique, so we all have our own strengths and weaknesses. Being objective and yet tolerant is the key to acceptance.

Once we've accepted ourselves, we can discover what we are interested in and what we want to be. Many people tend to go along with social expectations. So before we start working towards a purpose, we should ask ourselves"Is this what we truly desire?"and"Is this going to change the situation we're in?"

The last stage is perseverance. Those who can self-realize are people who focus on the things they want to change.

Through the three stages, we could gain recognition of ourselves. And by this point, whatever our lives were like, we would be able to stand tall, confident of ourselves.

    A. It's nothing to a man of perseverance.

    B. But indeed we should live for ourselves.

    C. Only by acceptance of the past can we change it.

    D. This is especially common among college students.

    E. It is the process of knowing ourselves and finding a purpose.

    F. Exploring our potential isn't going to be done in a short time.

    G. Only when we understand these can we pursue them or change them.
