A series of massive thunder storms hit our area recently, causing flash flooding and knocking down tree branches and even trees. I had spent the afternoon picking up branches out of my yard and throwing them away. Then just before I was getting ready to take my dogs for their last walk of the day, the warnings came on my television and over my phone that another of these storms was heading our way.
I quickly took my dogs outside. Huge clouds were rolling in while thunder boomed over the hills. I knew that the stars were shining but I certainly couldn't see them. The darkness seemed darker and scarier than usual because I knew what was on the way. That was when I saw it. The tiniest blink（闪亮）of light, up high, at the far end of the grassland behind my house. I smiled. The first of the fireflies had appeared for the summer at just the time I needed to see his light. Soon a few others were blinking their lights as well. It amazed me how far their light traveled in the darkness of the night and how they didn't seem bothered at all by the approaching storm. I spent an extra few minutes watching my lightening bug friends and taking in their message of light before heading in to get ready for the storm. As I did, though, I noticed that the darkness no longer seemed so scary and that my fear had been replaced with joy.
Life does have its share of storms, some caused by nature and some caused by us. We can't go through life being scared of them, however. Take a lesson from the fireflies then. Let your light shine. It may seem tiny but you will be amazed at how far it can be seen and how easily it can drive the dark away.
Do patients of female doctors seem to live longer? Study after study has shown that it may be true. A recent study looked at the outcomes of male and female heart patients. It found that death rates for both women and men were lower when the doctor was female. Women treated by male doctors had the highest death rate.
The reason is that women doctors are more likely to listen to their patients. They are more likely to take their patients seriously than male doctors do.
Another study focused on listening. It found female doctors spent more time listening to patients than their male colleagues did. But taking time to listen comes with a cost. By the end of the day, the women doctors fell an hour behind in their schedules.
Does this make women “better" doctors? Well, yes and no. Listening skills are the key. It follows that listening leads to taking patients seriously. Listening is particularly important for the well-being of heart patients. Heart attack symptoms can be different in men and women. Chest pains, for instance, are less common in women who are having a heart attack. If there is no chest pain, doctors often leave out a heart attack. Male doctors are less likely to listen to female patients. They may be more likely to miss other heart attack symptoms.
Why do female patients do better when treated by female doctors? It may be that women patients feel more comfortable talking to female physicians. Or it may be that women doctors are more focused on the unique heart disease symptoms that can occur in women. It could be that women doctors are better communicators. Or women doctors may be better at picking up clues from female patients.
Microplastics are “one of the greatest man-made disasters of our time”, according to the Natural History Museum. That's bad news, given they are also everywhere: in tap water, the food you buy, the clothes you wear and the air you breathe.
The largest microplastics can be seen by the naked eye and are anything under half a centimetre in size. But many of them are small enough to act like spots of dust which we can unconsciously breathe in or eat in food. The smallest particles are called nanoplastics and they are small enough to get their way deep into the human body.
New findings from the University of Portsmouth show that there is so much synthetic（合 成的） material in our homes that we might be breathing in up to 7, 000 microplastic particles a day. Using special equipment, researchers measured a typical family home and found the highest concentration of it was in the bedroom of the eight-year-old daughter, whose room was decorated with plastic-based bedding, carpet and soft toys.
Although research is in its early stage, the risks of these plastics could be serious-some studies have linked high exposure to cancer risk and disrupting our hormones（荷尔蒙）. In animal studies，the particles have been shown to affect metabolism（新陈代谢），gut bacteria and the immune system, among other things.
It is not yet known what a healthy level of microplastics might look like, but Dr Sabine Donnai, CEO of the Viavi clinic, thinks that many people in the West are over the limit. In tests at her clinic, patients often come back with dangerously high levels of plastic in their bodies, she says.

Perhaps every mother is willing to give her children enough love. A mother's love inspires her children to overcome difficulties, make progresses and remain healthy. However, too much love can also have a badly effect on children. Out of love, my mother used not to let me to do anything—she actually does all the things around the house. But now she's starting to ask me to do some housework because she found that it caused me to being lazy and even kept me mastering living skills.
