Hunter Croteau knew he was overweight. But it never brought any changes to his life. It was normal to be fat. Although he knew that weighing much meant his health would suffer, he believed he had much time to become perfect, but not the present time. He didn't even know how much he weighed. One day when he tried to know it, he found the scale at his home was no longer able to weigh him, which almost drove him crazy. This time Croteau knew a change was a must.
He went to his doctor to find out he was 367 pounds. He turned out to be fatter than he had thought, which made him laugh bitterly. So once he graduated from high school, with the help of his family, Croteau threw himself into a healthy diet. But after two weeks, he fell off the wagon. He couldn't quit the food high in calories himself into a healthy diet. But after two weeks, he fell off the wagon. He couldn't quit the food high in calories. "Lying in bed that night, I knew that l was not going back on the diet the next morning, and I needed to make a big step," Croteau said.
After careful consideration, his doctor suggested getting sleeve gastrectomy(袖状胃切除术), which typically removes 80 percent of the stomach and therefore limits the amount of food a person can eat. Croteau decided to have the surgery, even though he was extremely nervous about going into the operation. "Losing weight is always hard no matter which way you choose," he told himself.
About a month after the surgery, Croteau began going to the gym, and he became increasingly interested in the science of fitness. Thanks to his daily workout habits and proper food intake, he lost 175 pounds in eight months. He keeps a good figure and is now studying to become a personal trainer. His experience gives him a strong desire to help those troubled by weight problems.
Have you ever made eye contact with a robot? It can be a very strange experience. Now, researchers have found that it is more than just a feeling. They ran an experiment that showed how a robot's gaze (凝视) can trick people into thinking they are socially interacting (互动) with a human being. That empiric can slow a person's ability to make decisions.
"Gaze is an important social signal that we employ on a day-to-day basis when interacting with others," said Professor Agnieszka Wykowska. She is the lead writer of a study on the research.
"The question is whether the robot gaze will cause very similar mechanisms (机制) in the human brain as another human's gaze would,"Wykowska said.
The team asked 40 people to play a video game of "chicken." In the game, each player has to decide whether to permit a car to drive straight toward another car or to turn to avoid a crash. The people were playing against a human-like robot sitting across from them.
During breaks in the game, players had to look at the robot. Sometimes the robot would look back and other times it would look away. As the interactions happened, the scientists collected information on behavior and brain activity.
"Our results show that, actually, the human brain regards the robot gaze as a social signal, and that signal has an effect on the way we're making decisions, on the strategies we use in the game and also on our replies,"Wykowska said.
"The gaze of the robot affected decisions, so humans were much slower in making the decisions in the game," she added.
The findings could be useful in helping to decide where and how human-like robots might be placed in the future.
Poor sleep has influences on employees' health and well-being, which can negatively affect an employer's bottom line. In fact, sleep deprivation increases the chances of workplace injuries by 70%
This is partially due to tired workers being less able to concentrate on workplace safety guidelines.
Employers can take easy, low-cost steps to make sure that their workers have the capability(能力) to sleep well and reduce the chances of workplace injuries.
Our approach focuses on improving supervisor (主管) support for employees' sleep. The majority of workplace training relies on employees to deal with their own sleep health. This is problematic, because many employees face challenges of improving their own sleep without outside support and education.
In February 2019, we published a study looking at the influence of a supervisor support training intervention(介入) on employees' sleep. Fifty-six study groups, made up of 791 employees in a Fortune 500 information technology firm, participated in the study.
Half of the study groups attended in-person group meetings to identify new ways to increase control over their own work schedules. The supervisors and managers in those same groups received additional in-person family-supportive supervisor training to improve their support for employees' family and non-work lives, and to promote the work-family balance.
Workers reported their time asleep, how rested they felt upon waking, and any inability they had to fall asleep. They also wore sleep tracking watches to measure their actual time spent sleeping each day. This study did not actually include a sleep training part. It focused solely on providing employees with more control over where and when they work. Besides, it taught their supervisors and managers to reduce demands, and better support employees' work-family balance.
We found that improving supervisors' support for employees' work-life balance can benefit employees' sleep in sustainable (可持续的) ways. In our study, both sleep quantity increased up to 18 months after the training. This study highlighted that an organization can keep supporting workers' work, family, health and well-being which can result in employees' reduced stress and improved sleep and job performance.

Ian Ellis packed up his things and headed to the Frampton Marsh nature reserve(保护区).He was planning on doing some bird watching. But instead, he took part in an unbelievable1!
As Ian looked through his telescope, he saw a herd of cows surrounding something in the mud (泥土), so Ian2to see what it was. And what he found was a complete3!
The reserve was only a few miles away from the ocean. And somehow, a 5-day-old baby seal (海豹) found its way to the grassland and became4in the mud. So Ian managed to take it to the5Natureland Seal Shelter.
At the shelter(收容所), the seal was named Celebration, and it was6that it was suffering from several7. But thanks to Ian discovering it, Celebration was right where it8to be in order to get well.
Celebration spent 16 weeks at the shelter. Once Celebration9recovered (康复), it was time to10it and its new friend, Charlie, back into the wild. As the one who'd found Celebration, it seemed fitting that Ian would do the11of sending them back to their true12.
Charlie raced off straight to the sea, but Celebration was a bit sad to13the human friends it had made. It gradually made its way to the water and eventually swam out to sea, but not before14back to say goodbye one last time.
Seeing it go was bittersweet but Ian said overall it really was a15experience.
Some people are great at remembering faces. While, for some people, remembering face can be difficult. Even for others, it is much worse. Such people have a condition (call)"face blindness". Its actual name is DP, is short for Developmental Prosopagnosia.
Experts say DP can differ (great) from patient to patient. In less severe cases, people are unable to describe the face of someone they have just met. In severe cases, people cannot even recognize (they)own children in a group photo.
Those who have DP show no clear signs. Take Dacia for example. If you met her, you probably wouldn't know that she suffered brain damage as a child. There would be no sign of it until you meet her a second time. She wouldn't remember you at all. Dacia has mostly recovered from her (injure). But now, she suffers from face blindness.
In the past, face blindness (think) to be very rare. But recent studies have shown that it might be more common experts thought. The study on face blindness will not directly lead any treatments(治疗). However, it may offer a much (deep) understanding of how we remember the world around us.
