    I was 16 years old and on a fortnight-long trip to visit a college in Iowa. On the way our group stopped in Chicago for a day. We were staying in a building on the south side of the city and were warned not to go out alone.

    It wasn't long, though, before I was feeling bored and decided to go for a short walk. I was going down a street when I saw some people making a wide circle around a man sitting on the sidewalk. His clothes were worn and torn and I could smell him from several feet away. I stopped in my tracks. My mind flashed back and I realized I had seen a homeless person once before: Me.

    It was a summer night in my 11th year when the home I grew up in caught fire in the middle of the night. I can still remember the fire destroyed everything we owned. Thankfully, our small town community showered us with love and care. They fed us, brought us clothes, and within a few days helped us to rent a temporary house. A few months later they helped us to finance a new home. I could remember feeling loved even after losing so much.

    The homeless man sitting in front of me, however, had no one to help him. I could see the sadness and desperation in his eyes. I only had a few dollars left in my wallet, but I went to him directly, bent down and handed them to this fellow, talking with him, touching his hand and wishing him well before I left.

    He isn't the first one to get my help these years. Seeing the joy on their face, I feel more than happy. I won't stop and say no to those who are in need. Even though what I can do is really limited, I believe that the world will change if each of us gives a little.

    When most of us think of sand, we immediately think of sunny beaches and summer holidays. But actually it's in pretty much everything that surrounds us in our everyday lives. From the walls of our homes to the glass bottles in our kitchens and even the mobile phones in our hands. Sand is the second most used resource in the world after water: it accounts for more than two-thirds of everything that's being dug out of the ground. But there isn't a limitless supply. In fact, a UN report says we might be running out.

    According to the report, we use an estimated 15 billion tons of sand every year in the construction industry alone. That's enough to build a 20m × 20m wall around the equator every year. However, sand can take tens of thousands of years to form: the process starts with rock being eroded(侵蚀) in the mountains and ends, eventually, with sand being in river beds and on the seafloor.

    Sand is heavy and difficult to transport, so in developing countries, sand is often mined from the nearest convenient source, and quite often that means a river bed or beach. But beaches and rivers are delicately balanced ecosystems and when a large amount of sand is removed, the balance is upset. The smallest fish, which eat organic matter on the sand in river beds, from the base of the food chain in a river. If this sand is removed, so is the source of food for the bottom feeders. All organisms in a food chain share the joys and the sorrows. Thus, when they disappear, so does the food for the larger fish which would have been caught and eaten, or sold by fishermen.

    It is high time we took into consideration the big problem concerning the tiny thing. More and more conservationists are calling for alternatives to sand especially in the construction industry.

    The development and testing of self-driving car technology has seen major progress but engineers are working on other kinds of autonomous vehicles too — including some built for water.

    Researchers at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) are leading one such project. It aims to create boats to transport goods and people along waterways of Amsterdam and explore how autonomous boats can make life in Amsterdam more streamlined. The Dutch capital has been called the world's "most watery city" because of its large network of canals which affects daily life and industry there; convenience of citizens' life and levels of productivity rely on water vehicles greatly.

    The engineers centered past efforts on the first autonomous boats designed to transport small goods. But their latest creation, the Roboat II, can also carry passengers. It measures two meters by one meter and weighs about 80 kilograms. A demonstration video of the model showed it carrying two people. The boat is designed to use the sensor-collected data to create and "pilot a path between a series of good points".

    The MIT team is currently developing its third autonomous water vehicle. That boat is expected to be four meters long and is designed to carry up to six passengers. The team says it designed its autonomous system to involve separate boats working together. For example, Roboat II vehicles can link up in larger groups guided by a leader boat. This ability can expand the possibilities of autonomous vehicles meant to transport goods. The team plans to test the vehicles in more noisy waters.

    In September, it was announced that an ocean research vehicle called the Mayflower Autonomous Ship would attempt to set sail across the Atlantic without a captain or crew on board. The 15-meter ship will take the same path across the Atlantic as the 1620 Mayflower. The builders of the new Mayflower say they hope it can be used in the future to travel and research parts of oceans that are too difficult or dangerous for people to reach.
