If a president, a philosopher, and one of the best-selling writers credited the same secret for their success, would you try to follow it too? What if the secret was something you already knew how to do? In fact, you probably do it every day. Here's what Friedrich Nietzsche wrote: "It is only ideas gained from walking that have any worth. " Thomas Jefferson: "Walking is the best possible exercise. " Charles Dickens: "If I could not walk far and fast, I think I should just explode and die. "

Researchers have found quite a lot of connections between walking and producing ideas. A Stanford University study found that participants were 81 percent more creative when walking as opposed to sitting. According to the study, walking outside-compared with on a treadmill (跑步机)-produces the most novel and highest-quality ideas.

The movement aspect of walking is obviously key. Our creative thinking is triggered (触发)by physical movement, which is exactly why walking-with your dog, a friend, or alone-feeds creative thinking.

The scenery is almost as important as the sweat. Breaking your routine with a walk can be a catalyst for fresh understanding of problems or projects. Just by going outside, you are stepping out of your familiar surroundings and your comfort zone, which is necessary if you want to open your mind to new possibilities. You can walk through a tree-filled neighborhood. You can walk through a park and observe people joking or birds singing. Being inside, you're more likely to be lifeless, which means you don't have enough energy to wonder or create.

So instead of setting a fitness goal, why not set a creativity goal that starts with walking? Involve yourself more closely in your surroundings. Tum off your phone and give yourself the chance to be present in the world, to hear conversations and natural sounds, and to notice the way people move and the way the sun reflects in puddle (小水坑).

    1. (1) How does the author introduce the topic?
A . By providing background. B . By borrowing phrases from great minds. C . By giving definition. D . By presenting well-known examples.
    2. (2) The underlined word in paragraph 4 means something ________.
      A . causing a change B . stopping progress C . catching eyes D . interrupting creativity
    3. (3) What can we learn from the passage?
A . Nature exploration improves fitness. B . Walking on a treadmill brings more energy. C . Working indoors makes people less creative. D . Familiar surroundings encourage novel ideas.
    4. (4) What can be a suitable title for the text?
A . Exercise in Nature. B . Train Your Brain. C . Develop Your Creativity. D . Walk for Wonder.

The Tokyo Olympics have been postponed until 2021. That delay offers a chance for reflection. The International Olympic Committee wants to make the games more popular with young people. To that end, it is introducing new events, such as skateboarding, surfing and climbing. Why not go further and let national teams compete at video games? Electronic sports such as "Fortnite", are vastly more popular than strange Olympic sports like curling (冰壶). In fact, they are more appealing than most mainstream sports. Only 28% of British boys aged 16-19 watch any traditional live sports; 57% play video games.

Some may complain that e-sports are not proper sports. Many parents, observing their teenagers sitting on the sofa all day shouting "Quick, pass me the shotgun!" at a screen, would agree. Yet video games are highly competitive, with professional teams that play to packed stadiums. There are perhaps only 200 tennis stars in the world who can make a living from playing in major competitions. By contrast, "League of Legends", a fantasy game played by teams of five, supports over 1,000 on good wages. Its World Championship final last year was watched by 44 million people.

Those against e-sports offer moral objections, too. They are addictive. Prince Harry has called for "Fortnite" to be banned for this reason. They are violent. At a time of global disharmony, it is bad idea to make virtual (虚拟的) killing an Olympic sport. The Olympics aim to promote peace.

Neither of these arguments is convincing. The idea that an activity, rather than material, can be addictive is controversial among doctors, as is the existence of a causal (因果的) link between gaming and violence. And the belief that warlike sports have no place in the Olympics is hard to agree with history. Wrestling was introduced in 708 BC. It is still there.

    1. (1) Why is the International Olympic Committee bringing in new events?
A . To replace mainstream sports. B . To attract more young people. C . To make up for the delay. D . To show innovations.
    2. (2) What are the figures in Paragraph 2 intended to show?
      A . E-sports are proper games. B . Tennis has declined greatly. C . Tennis players' salary is lower. D . E-sport players have achieved a lot.
    3. (3) How does the author feel towards the causal link between gaming and violence?
      A . Positive. B . Skeptical. C . Unconcerned. D . Discouraged.
    4. (4) What is the purpose of the text?
A . To introduce how e-sports develop. B . To show what benefits e-sports can bring. C . To explain why young people like playing e-sports. D . To argue e-sports can be included in the Olympics.

A 293-million-mile journey of the NASA Perseverance rover (探测器) to Mars: ended successfully on February 18, 2021, with a picture-perfect landing inside the Jezero Crater. The car-sized, six-wheeled rover, nicknamed Percy is the US space agency's biggest and most advanced explorer to date. Its primary mission is to search for signs of ancient microbial (微生物的) life on Mars.

Landing on Mars is extremely tricky. The Red Planet's gravitational pull causes approaching spacecraft to go faster to high speeds, while its thin atmosphere-just 1 percent that of Earth's-does little to help slow it down as it approaches the surface.

The scientists had to reduce Percy's 12,000 mph speed to a safe landing speed of less than five mph-in just six and a half minutes. The target entry angle also had to be a precise 12 degrees-any steeper, and the spacecraft would burn up; any flatter, and it would get lost in space. It is no wonder that the final approach is often referred to as the "seven minutes of terror. "

Upon attaining a manageable speed, Percy briefly flew over the Martian surface to seek out the perfect landing spot. Its complex map-reading system rapidly scanned the area and matched it with maps in its database to find the best location.

The NASA scientists will spend the next two months testing Percy's scientific instruments. Once ready, the rover will begin to carry out its mission.

"Perseverance is the smartest robot ever made, but confirming that microbial life once existed carries an unusually large burden of proof," said Lori Glaze, director of NASA's Planetary Science Division. "While we'll learn a lot with the great instruments we have aboard the rover, it may very well require the far more well-equipped laboratories and delicate instruments back here on Earth to tell us whether our samples (样本) carry evidence that Mars once harbored life. "

    1. (1) What is the extraordinary challenge for the rover to land on Mars?
A . The speed reduction. B . The atmosphere analysis. C . The location search. D . The time management.
    2. (2) What is paragraph 3 mainly about?
A . Ways to find the precise entry angle. B . Consequences of wrong entry degree. C . Factors to survive "the seven minutes". D . Reasons for the necessity of speed reducing.
    3. (3) What does "it" refer to in paragraph 4?
      A . The spot. B . The area. C . The system. D . The surface.
    4. (4) What can be inferred from Lori Glaze's words?
A . Instruments aboard the rover are not quite reliable. B . Perseverance is able to collect enough evidence needed. C . Man still has long way to go to prove life was on Mars. D . Samples of Mars will be returned soon to our labs on the earth.

Have you ever been labeled "perfectionist"? Or do you consider yourself to be one? It's inviting to see perfectionism as a desirable or positive quality.

Healthy perfectionists want to develop their skills continually. Their standards are always rising, and they approach work with optimism, pleasure and a desire to improve. Unhealthy perfectionists, however, are never satisfied with what they achieve.  They may experience fear of failure, anxiety and other painful emotions.

According to a 2011 research, perfectionism is linked to health issues such as eating disorders and depression. Perfectionism can also seriously impact your creativity. This is because perfectionism can prevent you from leaving your comfort zone and taking risks.  You may avoid starting a new project until you've found the best way to approach it. You might also get caught up in minor details or repeat tasks that have already been completed. As a result, this wastes time that could have been spent on more important tasks.

If you think that you have a problem with perfectionism, start by setting realistic goals. Think about your most important life and career goals. Not only will this make it easier to reach your objectives, but you'll also experience the thrill of achieving these smaller goals.

Perhaps Theodore Roosevelt said it best—"Do what you can, with what you have, where you are. " Accept that this is the best you can do and don't try and make up some perfect world.

    A. If something isn't perfect, they refuse it.

    B. Perfectionism can lead to self-criticism, too.

    C. Perfectionism can damage your productivity, too.

    D. Then, break them down into monthly or yearly steps.

    E. In fact, severe perfectionism can do more harm than good.

    F. They show that you're not afraid to push yourself and try new things.

    G. When perfectionism gets out of control, it can harm you in many aspects.

七、用单词的适当形式完成短文
  • 17. 阅读下面短文,在空白处填入1个适当的单词或括号内单词的正确形式。

For much of history, reading was a fairly noisy activity. Today, however, the majority of us bottle the words in our heads as if (sit) in a library.

Recent studies provide ample evidence  the ancient art of reading aloud has a number of benefits, from helping improve our memories strengthening emotional bonds between people.

According to a research on the impacts of reading on memory, people consistently remember words and texts (well) if reading them aloud than if reading them silently. This phenomenon has been named the "production effect", which means that producing (write) words-namely, reading them out loud-improves our memory of them. Even just silently mouthing the words makes  more memorable.

One reason why people remember the spoken words better is that it gives us  additional basis for memory. We are (general) better at recalling events that require active involvement. For instance, producing a word in (respond) to a question makes it easier to remember.

In time when our interactions with others and the large amount of information we take in (be) all too transient (转瞬即逝的) , perhaps it is worth making bit more time for reading out loud.

A farmer grew some vegetables in his garden. One day his wife was ill and he had no money. He had to sell some cabbages and carrots in the market. The next morning he took two baskets of vegetables to town. But it was snowing hard that afternoon and there were few people in the street. When his vegetables were sold out, it was dark. He bought some medicine and hurried to his village.

On his way home he saw a person lying on the snow. He placed his baskets on the ground and was going to help the person to get up. At that time he found it was a dead man and there was much blood on his body. He was so afraid that he ran away quickly, without taking the baskets with him.

The next afternoon the farmer was sent to the police station. Having shown the baskets, an officer asked, "Are these yours?" "Yes, sir," the farmer answered timidly. "Have you killed the man?" "No, no, sir," the farmer said in a hurry. "When did you see the dead man?" "About seven last evening." "Did you see who killed the man?" "No, sir." The officer brought out a knife and asked, "Have you seen it before?" "No, sir." The officer became angry and told the policeman to beat him up and sent him into prison. He wanted to trap the farmer into the confession, but the farmer didn't admit he was the murderer.
