With paper flowers and music hanging around in the air, Lyu Jun was hosting a small farewell ceremony at an industrial zone in Shenzhen, Guangdong province. It was a funeral for a pet dog. Lyu came up with the idea of becoming a pet mortician (殡葬师) four years ago when he was preparing to start a business.

"At that time, there was only one brick-and-mortar(实体的) business that provided funeral services for pets in Shenzhen, but hundreds of pets die every day in this city," he said. According to Lyu, many pet owners used to bury the remains of their beloved animals near their homes, which had a harmful impact on the environment and created the risk of spreading disease.

He saw a gap in the market for someone able to properly handle the death of pets. "A pet funeral service provides treatment of the bodies that is harm-free, and it is the greatest comfort to pet owners," Lyu said.

He takes good care of the remains of the pets and tidies up their appearance before the funeral. In addition, he prepares funeral addresses and selects suitable tombs for the pets. He also films funerals for owners who cannot attend the ceremonies, and provides paper and pens for those who want to write down their blessings and hang the notes on the wishing tree.

Over the past four years, Lyu has bid farewell to more than 2,000 dogs, cats and other kinds of animals. He also does volunteer work in his spare time to promote responsible dog raising. "The pet funeral service industry is still in its babyhood, and I hope there will be a set of strict standards for people who take on this job and a belter environment for the industry," Lyu said.

According to a survey, the waste of food on the dining table occupies 10% of the total grain output. Last week Meituan co-published a proposal with a number of business organizations, calling on restaurants to stop food waste and help develop new eating habits for customers. "Restaurants should use official accounts on social media and live-streaming to promote and advocate food-saving actions," the proposal said.

Meituan and the organizations are advocating that merchants offer guidance for consumers, including reminding them during the ordering process about the taste of the ingredients, portion sizes and other information about the dishes, to help them avoid food waste due to misleading information.

Catering associations in more than 18 provinces have also joined the campaign to remove food waste. The Wuhan Catering Association proposed an "N-1" ordering code for restaurants in which a group of 10 diners would only order enough for nine people. More food is only brought to the table if required. It has inspired people to rethink their relationship with food and waste.

On Friday, the China Cuisine Association announced that it had teamed up with Ele. me, a food delivery platform, to launch a " half-dish plan", encouraging restaurants to provide customers with the option to order smaller portions. Besides, customers are encouraged to take their leftovers home.

To reduce food waste on social media platforms, some popular video platforms have stepped up content reviews of food-related live streams and implemented regulation of online eating shows. Now, if users search certain keywords, such as "eating show" or "competitive eaters", a cautionary message pops up to remind them to cherish food and keep a reasonable diet.

    1. (1) What is the purpose of the proposal mentioned in the passage?
A . To monitor food sales on social media and live-streaming. B . To expand the business and competitive ability of Meituan. C . To encourage restaurants to take measures to reduce food waste. D . To promote cooperation between Meituan and other organizations.
    2. (2) How is Paragraph 3 developed?
      A . By doing a survey. B . By offering analysis. C . By making comparisons. D . By giving an example.
    3. (3) What is the suggestion for consumers in the passage?
A . Purchasing their favorite food. B . Buying proper amounts of food. C . Following some competitive eaters. D . Leaving their leftovers in the restaurant.

"We've designed buildings for 100-year floods;" says Kevin Van Den Wymelenberg, director of the Institute for Health in the Built Environment. "But there will be another epidemic or another pandemic - or there might just be another flu season. Let's go ahead and learn to design for the 100-year flu. "

Public health officials agree that one of the simplest ways to prevent the indoor spread of the virus is to increase the amount of outside air that comes into our buildings. The simple act of opening a window can meaningfully reduce the concentration of infectious (感染的) particles in the air.

But in many current office buildings, the windows aren't operable. Creating a tight air seal in a building is one of the main strategies used to make buildings more energy-saving. So architects are now wrestling with how to increase air circulation without accelerating energy consumption. One solution, according to Kevin Van Den Wymelenberg, is a special type of window design. This allows outside air to be warmed or cooled, as needed, when it enters the building.

Most current office buildings usually adopt open-plan offices, which are suitable for modern office work. But in time of pandemic, viruses spread easily among workers in the office. Rather than seal employees into individual hard-walled rooms, office designers can preserve the benefits of open-plan offices by fitting airflow systems that clean the air breathed out. For example, vents (通风口) can be installed at the top of the room to pull out the cloud of exhaled (呼出的) air and for fresh air to be delivered along the floor. This type of "biophilic design" can increase productivity and improve physical health.

What all these changes have in common is that they'll happen only if the public continue to focus on indoor health after the acute crisis of the pandemic has passed. In the long run, what's perhaps even more important is making whole environments support human immune function.

    1. (1) According to Kevin, what is a solution to improving air circulation without consuming more energy?
A . Creating specially-designed windows. B . Increasing the amount of outside air. C . Fitting vents at the top of the building. D . Designing a tight air seal in the building.
    2. (2) Which of the following may be considered a "biophilic design"?
A . Offices with exhaled air. B . Offices with airflow systems. C . Offices with big windows. D . Offices with individual rooms.
    3. (3) What does the author focus on in the last paragraph?
A . Adding some background information. B . Explaining the concept of indoor health. C . Expressing the expectation for the future. D . Providing the theoretical basis for the research.
    4. (4) What can be the best title for the passage?
A . Setting up buildings good for the environment B . The need to put human health in the first place C . Redesigning the office for the next 100-year flu D . The simplest way to stop indoor spread of viruses
