Modern humans have a hard time controlling their desire to eat. Often you eat not because you are hungry, but because you are affected by many other things. How much you eat is strongly affected by how much those around you eat. People eating alone eat least. People eating with one other person eat 35 percent more than they do at home. People dining in a party of four eat 75percent more. Eating with overweight friends? You'll eat more. Is your waitress overweight? You'll eat more. Wide variety of food? You'll eat more.

Plates can decide how sweet dessert tastes. If people ate it off a paper plate, they'd say, "This is good." If they ate it off a fancy silver plate, they would say, "This is the greatest cake I've eaten in my entire life."

Your knowledge about what makes food good or bad also affects how much you eat. You tend to eat more when you think the food is good, and less when you think it is bad. So Grandma's cookies always taste better than other cookies. "Good food" even has a "health halo(光环) effect". If we're eating something healthy, we feel that everything in that meal is healthy. Due to this, people often believe that a cheese cake with a salad has fewer calories (卡路里) than the cheese cake alone. That's perhaps also why eating organic (有机的) food might turn you into an annoying guy. Your brain may use anything that makes you feel good about your own morality to excuse your immoral behavior.

Food and hunger affect your judgment too. Hungry judges give more serious sentences. Kids who don't eat breakfast behave worse than kids who eat their breakfast. People who have low blood sugar are more likely than the average person to have trouble concentrating and controlling their unpleasant emotions.

    1. (1) What is mentioned as a cause of overeating?
A . Suffering from great loneliness. B . Being served by a helpful waitress. C . Being treated to high quality food. D . Eating with many friends.
    2. (2) According to the passage, an annoying person may be one who ______.
A . finds any excuse for eating more B . is crazy about the quality of plates C . competes with others in making cookies D . teaches people to stick to morality
    3. (3) According to the passage, people are more likely to make a bad judgment when ______.
A . they don't feel hungry B . they aren't overweight C . they have low blood sugar D . they know little about food
    4. (4) What would be the best title for the passage?
A . When Can't We Go on a Diet? B . What Affects Eating? C . How to Make Good Food D . Where to Find Safe Food

Researchers in the US say they might have discovered how to fight against and even reverse some processes of ageing, at least in mice. Injecting the blood of young mice into the older ones improved their brainpower, a study found. Scientists at Stanford University plan to carry out trials in people in the hope that new treatments for dementia(痴呆症) can be developed.

"There are factors present in blood from young mice that can recharge an old mouse's brain so that it functions more like a younger one," says Dr. Tony from Stanford University School of medicine. In the study published in Nature Medicine, mice aged 18 months were given injections of the blood taken from mice aged 3 months. The injected mice performed better on memory tests than mice of the same age that had not been given the blood. Dr. Tony said it was not known whether the same was true of humans, but a trial was planned.

A research center in UK said the treatment restored certain aspects of learning and memory in mice, but was of unknown importance to humans. The research, while very interesting, did not test the type of brain damage that was seen in dementia, which is not a necessary consequence of ageing.

Meanwhile, two similar studies by a separate team have thrown more light on how young blood may benefit the old, in mice at least. A substance in the blood of mice previously shown to have an anti-ageing effect on heart muscle also improved brain cells, according to a Harvard team. The research, published in Science, found the blood factors encouraged the growth of brain cells in old mice, and restored their sense of smell. The same chemical also improved muscle power of aged mice, the researchers found.

    1. (1) The underlined word in paragraph 1 probably means _________.
      A . change B . destroy C . speed D . increase
    2. (2) Scientists in the US will test the discovery in humans with the aim of __________.
A . proving the possibility to live longer. B . showing the importance of scientific research. C . publishing the study in Nature Medicine. D . treating an age-related disease successfully.
    3. (3) According to the studies, the blood from young mice benefits the old in certain ways except in_________.
      A . memory B . muscle power C . fur color D . brain cells
    4. (4) What's the author's attitude to the anti-ageing studies?
      A . supportive B . objective C . negative D . doubtful

Photography (摄影) has been my interest ever since I was old enough to pick up a camera, but today I want to share with you the 15 most treasured (珍贵的)photos of mine, and I didn't take any of them. In fact, most of them were taken by random (随机的)tourists.

My story begins when I was in New York City for a speech, and my wife took a picture of me holding my daughter on her first birthday. We're on the corner of 57th and 5th. We happened to be back in New York exactly a year later, so we decided to take the same picture.

Well you can see where this is going. Approaching (临近) my daughter's third birthday, my wife said, "Hey, why don't you take Sabina back to New York and make it a father-daughter trip, and continue the ceremony?" This is when we started asking passing tourists to take the picture.

So these photos are far more than representatives (代表) for a single moment, or even a specific (具体的) trip. They're also ways for us to freeze time for one week in October and reflect on (反思) our times and how we change from year to year, and not just physically, but in every way. Because while we take the same photo, our viewpoints (观点) change, and she reaches new milestones (里程碑) and I get to see life through her eyes, and how she communicates with and sees everything. This very focused time we get to spend together is something we value (重视,珍惜) and expect the entire (全部的) year.

    1. (1) What can we know about the author from the first paragraph?
A . He is fond of being photographed alone. B . He hardly ever asks strangers to take pictures of him. C . He has been interested in photography since childhood. D . He's proud of the 15 most treasured photos taken by himself.
    2. (2) Who came up with the idea of having a father-daughter trip when Sabina was 3 years old?
      A . Her mother. B . Her father. C . Sabina herself. D . An unknown tourist.
    3. (3) It can be inferred from the last paragraph that_______.
A . children usually get to see life through adults' eyes B . the 15 photos are meaningful to the author's family C . it takes the author a whole week to have a family photo taken D . the viewpoints of the author's family never change with the time
    4. (4) What can be the best title of the text?
A . Believe it or not: photos do change B . Photos help a family become rich C . Even strangers can help take photographs D . A father-daughter bond, one photo at a time

I still remember the days I was a child. Although he had plenty of works to do, he still stayed with me and plays children's games with me. With time goes by, I am in senior two now. It is me who have no time to stay with him now! However, he is still behind me and try his best to make a better life for our family. How handsome and selflessly he is!
